Antonio Conte - officially NOT the coach of THFC

Yes, I agree with that. Similar to my post above about our main problem being a manager who insists on playing a back 3 despite not having decent wingbacks, rather than picking a formation which suits the players available

I think Doherty and Perisic are decent wingbacks (though I don’t know why Conte prefers playing Royal). And I think Romero, Dier and Davies are all better suited to a back three. So personally I don’t think the formation is our issue - after all we were doing better last season with the same formation.

Personally I’m more frustrated with the amount of gametime Conte’s been giving Son and Royal, and the fact that under Conte’s management Bissouma looks a much worse player.

But I also think Conte’s been disadvantaged by injuries and loss of form to key players. Without Son, Kulu, Richarlison, Bentancur, Romero and Lloris playing (or playing well), our players are pretty average apart from Kane.

Spot on imo. Doherty and Perisic are definitely more suited to wing back than full back roles. Unsure about Sessegnon.

Definitely agree on injuries and regression/form as well.

To bring it back to formation and system. I really struggle to see a formation or system that would have gotten this squad to deal better with those injuries and drops in quality.

I must be one of the sheep section, as I'm increasingly thinking of Conte as a bad fit for Spurs, despite last season's miraculous overtaking of Arsenal. It seems that Conte's system needs a far more specialised or particular skill set from players than most. Our "goals against" this season suggests that a back 3 just isn't working. And you have to wonder if the lack of transfer activity is related to the desire not to invest in players who won't suit another manager. This season is starting to feel like a slow-motion car crash. It would be great to be proven wrong, starting tonight....

Competent defenders/goalkeeper and fullbacks/wing backs that are good in an attacking sense are needed whoever the manager is

But again, we had a much better defensive record last season - 24 conceded in 28 PL games under Conte - and that was with a back three.

So.....what's happened?

We are more expansive, so defence less protected?... doesn't feel like that. In fact when we go for it we usually do better. It's the passive periods we concede.

Maybe it's worth looking at the starting defenders last season...did we have more consistency and less injuries?. We have missed a lot of Romero this season.

I thought we would 100% kick on this season, a shoe-in for top 4 (minimum). The 1 game a week definitely helped last season and a big issue this season (for the way Conte plays) is opponents have simply worked us out imo.

Some big big player difference this season
Hugo
Son
Everyone else has had good and bad games so a mixed bag
But Hugo has had one do two strong games and is well on course to set a league record for errors leading to goals
Son… world class last season… second class this season. You can’t factor for that level of drop off

you can add more defensive players but with Hugo spilling the ball so much or not able to kick the ball we’re better off trying to do more offensively

and that’s where the son issue kicks in

2 big differences for me this season.

Firstly, the individual errors at the back are killing us. I don't think we are conceding more chances from general play than before but it seems that almost every howler ends up in our net.

Secondly, the front 3. The last third of last season in particular they were all on fire and their combined goal/assist stats were ridiculous. They were winning us the games, the rest of the team were just making up the numbers.

Kulu's injuries and Son's form has destroyed that dynamic this season and just highlights the paucity of our attacking options.

Gotta be looking at playing Davies over Lenglet who is a defensive disaster TBH, get that core that did us so well last year and hope it gels back. Asking too much to align for Lenglet, Dier and Romero to succeed IMO, need that 7/10 week in week out player like Davies

Hugo didn’t make one mistake in the last 10 games of the season

Yeh his form this season is not helping but Davies is a better defender than Lenglet and can actually defend, which helps when you are a defender
Maybe
I think there are pros and cons with both
But neither is stopping hugo slinging it in his net which is the issue
