Son Heung-Min

Son's greatest strength the way I see it, is his directness and ability to go past players to get himself into position for shots or through balls. When this doesn't come off, it both looks awkward and is highly visible. It's a risky playstyle, he can't go under the radar returning passes for 90 minutes looking "solid". I don't think he's been all that horrible, but something's not right. I think he needs rest and a little time to "find himself" again, not play himself into form.
His decision making has been so bad and it affects his game and his impact

Yeah, he's like Robbie Keane. At his absolute best when he's not thinking too much or given too many choices.
That’s what defines world class players vs world class talent for me
The real greats make time and just own it. They make it by standing still sometimes
There are however others with great technical capabilities but lack that time and space creation

As mentioned earlier, I think much of his game has been about making space for himself - and succeeding. What use he has made with that time and space has been up for debate more than once over the years, but there has been some glorious moments as we all know. Nowadays he's not even able to make that space or pass a man, and that makes him look useless even when he's really not because it's so visible it overshadows the good he does. He's also very good in combination play inside or just outside the box - of which there are nowt these days. Without any of this, he's just another player.

We also tend to forget that few teams are afraid of Kane anymore, the glory days of opponents double- and triple marking him making acres of space for others are long gone. There's no free lunch anymore.

Kane is always man marked
Every time he got near to it today he had a CB and a midfielder on him

It looks to me as if son has been instructed to play with his back towards goal to receive passes, then turn. This is not his strength. At his best he’s making forward runs, playing facing the other way is a waste of his talent and lessens his threat.

no team would leave kane unmarked - in the epl, not just kane but every striker too.
i thought the coach's job is to find a way to utilise the team so that the strikers get an advantage.

if a striker can't get a clear shot on goal is either the tactics or the striker who is not good enough.
southgate is better at unlocking the best of kane compared to conte.

yes its clear that Kane is the leading striker in conte's team and the goal is a slow build up unless its through perisic who's crosses i have no idea who is responsible to connect with. once through perisic, the son is out of play.

Agreed, albeit I do worry that he is a yard short right now and hope that is not permanent. He was matched by Ashley Young today.

Even if that is the case, he has been poor regardless. Some were claiming Son is world class, he can’t even complete simple passes and this is nothing new. His all round game is poor, and unlike Kane if he is not scoring he really is not adding anything. He has had plenty of chances to run at defenders which is his forte and has lost the ball. Maybe he has had a tweek to the role he is being asked to play, but he has been way off what he should be performing….

This!

Son has, imo, always been a moments player. Can have spells of doing little to influence the game. Can be threatening of course, but needs those situations to arise where he can exploit space, use his pace and of course his excellent finishing.

Deny him those moments and he's not a great player. If he's losing a yard that means less of those situations and that would be a worrying sign.

I don't think he's instructed to play in that way. For me we're just not playing well enough to find him in those situations where he can use his strengths.

I think he's much better at exploiting space than creating it. Yes, he used to go past players, as long as there was space there to be exploited. Put him in a crowded area without space to exploit and he's imo never been particularly good.

I guess we will never know for sure 100%, but Conte is an automations manager and Son comes from a culture where he does what he’s told.

He would be dropped if we had a player to replace him with
We do… but he is injured again
We don't have a like for like replacement but we can switch formation until Richy is fit. Go 3-5-2 with Skipp giving the defence the protection it isn't getting at the moment.

Go more defensive… we need to take the pressure off the defence because our keeper is dead now
