Son Heung-Min

The mask must affect his periphery vision slightly, which I get his frustration for. He must feel like it's an anchor that he has to carry around but I'm guessing for insurance purposes, he has to keep it on despite losing some small level of awareness. I'm happy for him to score, hopefully that takes some of the pressure off in his mind and he can play more freely.

5/6 ariel duals won, not bad for someone who never wins one...

I did say first time in a while, time is relative ;)

Right not the first time this has worked so leave the title alone now please!

Aside from this, during the first 70 mins Son had gone full Torres, there was no directness when he had the ball,he was coughing it up on the halfway line by running into traffic and when he went through one on one when offside we both knew he wouldn't score.
However a shinner that deflected in off the defender when not having time to make a decision and suddenly he's going past players with ease again. Incredible how the mental aspect can really affect players especially attacking one's. Hopefully this will kick off one of those streaks we are so fond of.
..

Think there was a change after the goal. But a lot of that was game conditions and he still looked well off his best imo.

Good for him to get a goal, he's not been playing with confidence in quite a while. Hopefully this will be a boost, but I think he will need quite a lot more to get back into the groove of things.

Best centre forward/midfielder/left winger/playmaker/anchor/backup keeper ever.
Remind me of something they mentioned on commentary last night during the City game. They said Pep would ideally want 11 midfield players for his starting XI. It makes it all the more surprising they chose to go all out for Grealish (a wide forward player type they already had loads of) the other summer and not Kane who would have filled that striker/midfielder remit.

It's a little chicken and egg, he needs the confidence to get the goals but the goals to regain confidence! Think he went over to the right for a bit after he scored but for a 2 footed player he really does struggle from that side!

Whipped it off in disgust after being dispossessed from behind, implying the mask impaired his peripheral vision.

Probably more an expression of frustration with his performance though.

“My vision is still okay, but when the ball is coming to me, it’s sometimes annoying, because I can’t see the ball because of the mask. It’s not really bothering me, but it’s not the best.

“Against Villa, I was really frustrated, because I received the ball and then suddenly I lost the ball, because I couldn’t see it. I was just angry.

“If I’m alone, obviously, I would play without the mask, but my parents, my family, my friends watching back in South Korea are all worried. Obviously, it’s a risk if someone hits me again.

“They [my parents] didn’t say you should wear it or whatever, but we were having dinner [after the Villa game] and they said, ‘Um, what happened with the mask?’

“Obviously, they’re worried. And also the physios and doctors said after the Villa game, ‘It’s your decision, but we recommend you should still be wearing the mask’, because the risk is still high, because it’s just seven weeks since the operation.”

That stat is just not right, as early in the first half there were two he lost, mainly because he hardly bothered to contest them. But he was right there.
Agreed, after 10 seconds I said to my son "why didn't Kane even jump to challenge for that header?" and then 30 seconds later I said the same.

Even with the mask off I don't think Son can excel in a Conte team with Wingers crowding out the space up front.
Son needs space to push and run, he isn't and will never be good with close control football.
Son excels best in a front two , which i don't see Conte playing.
Interesting conundrum for Conte, two golden boot winners who are underperforming individually and as a pair this season.

If I were Son, if Conte stays, I would seek a move elsewhere while my stock is stil high.

Two? Kane is having an excellent season, it’s only Haaland ahead of him.

He did excel in a Conte team last season didn't he?

I think our poor overall play has contributed to Son not shining this season. I also think Son has been worse. But I don't think it's a systemic issue.

Perhaps a move would be good for him, perhaps it would even be good for us? But I also think he can regain his form under Conte.

Sons played in a front two for about a seasons worth of games in total for us with his best season coming whilst played in a 3

We didn't have Perisic last season and I suspect Son benefited from the space up front.

Good for us depends on who we replace Son with. Perhaps Trossard is a better option with Perisic and Kane up front. He gets into tights spaces well.
