Transfer thread

3rd best team in the league (our record since Conte started), plus two new starters in our weakest positions.

Bentancur and Kulusevski have demonstrated that you just need the right players, not the hyped names (or whatever brick Mendes is trying to push)

You think that squad is good enough to challenge for the title? Because that is what conte wants to be doing.

I'm not sure that there will be much money to spend this summer that doesn't come from sales. We already have lots of transfer instalments due to other clubs and not much in the way of payments coming in to offset them. IMO the only ways that we spend significant money in the summer is if ENIC make a liquidity injection (history tells us they won't), ENIC dilute their holding and bring in outside investment to inject liquidity (again history tells us they won't), if we take on even more debt (I think the current level of debt is already bordering on being dangerously high) or if we sell Harry Kane (with him having 2 years left on his contract this may happen if somebody gets close to bidding about £120m for him... I think our interest in Nunez from Benfica is back up in case Kane won't sign a new deal).

With the above in mind (though assuming we keep Kane) and considering we punted off the permanent signing of Romero to this summer, I think we'll have an absolute maximum of £40m net (plus Romero) to spend this summer. To be able to properly compete across 3 or 4 trophies next season I think we need to sign these positions as a minimum:
A backup/rotation keeper
A first choice LCB
A first choice RWB
A first choice CM
A rotation option CF
On top of that we could probably also do with a better option to cover CB/RCB and a creative attacking midfield player who could slot into any role behind the striker. However those are less essential signings.

We've spent more net each of the last 2 seasons. While being hindered by covid. Not sure we'd spend less after our first season with a full stadium. Extra money from the us tv deal aswell and possibly cl money.

Not next season, maybe the one after. We've a young squad that will grow. We should be comfortable 3rd next year though I reckon

We've been loaning players with options to buy, so the outlay on them hasn't come yet. We've got to pay £43m for Romero this summer, plus £29m for Kulusevski if we hit his obligation target (qualifying for CL).

The loan fees are the same as what we would have paid in installments anyway (possibly more). So don't really see that as an issue. We'll probably do the same again this summer and get one or two on loan to buy.

Hakimi seems to want out of psg. Messi and neymar don't like him so psg might look to offload. Can't think of a better fit for our rwb. Ndombele and cash?

Outside of Spurs I’ve watched very little football this season so don’t have much to add on transfer targets, but I do wonder whether the 5 sub rule coming in will strengthen the need for genuine competition in the squad?

The big clubs will be able to further utilise star studded benches so I would say we’d be further behind. It’s great having a nailed down XI for a run in like we have to end the season with one game a week but whether it’s CL or EL we do have to have more actual competition in the squad imo

Where would Kane go, now City are getting Haaaland and United wont be in the CL/are likely to blow their load on Rice?

Won't hold my breath. If there's no one seriously in for him, good. But not assuming that to be the case just yet.

There will be no Kane saga this summer. If we get CL he will sign a new contract. If we narrowly miss out he wont be kicking up a fuss this time and levy will not be lowering the asking price which is £150m.

If we narrowly miss out on 4th and someone bids £150m then he will leave. Anything else and he stays.

Wish I had your confidence on this particular issue. I think there's more uncertainty than you do.

Depends how the deals are structured.

Not really an issue as they're wonderful players. But it will influence our budget surely.

I'm not sure we'll go for another CM. A lot depends on Conte's view on Skipp and Sarr I guess.

I think we'll see 4 incomings (especially as we've got big outlays due on Romero and Kulusevski), something like:

-------------------------Lloris/Johnstone

-----Romero/Royal-------Dier/Tanganga-------Torres/Davies

Lamptey/Doherty----------------------------------------Regulion/Sessegnon

---------------Bentancur/Sarr-------Skipp/Hojbjerg

---Kulusevski/Moura-------Kane/Brereton-------Son/Bergwijn

Outs: Golini, Sanchez, Rodon, Carter-Vickers, Winks, Ndombele and Lo Celso.

The toss ups are probably between Sarr and Winks, and Bergwijn and Gill - i.e. do we loan the younger player again or sell the older one.
I don’t see us going for a CM now too
I really don’t want Lampety for the silly fee being asked. He should be available for sessegnon money not Kyle walker money

None of them will be cash in one hit though

I think n the squad could be another 15 to 20% better with a pre-season, the right exits and 3/4 sensible buys that don’t unsettle the team

True. But very few signings are.

If both hadn't been here on loan already and we signed them they would count towards "net spend", even if there were installments. Same logic for loans being made permanent imo. The club is committed to paying that over the next however many years.

If we sign player X for £40m spread equally over 4 year installments, we've signed a £40m player. What's different in making the Romero deal permanent?

Hakimi, bastoni, dybala, johnstone, bissouma. Think we'd look good. Maybe depay if bergwijn wants to leave.

Looking at the post which you replied to, I'd be amazed if we go into next season with Sarr being one of only 4 CMs

Young, never played in England, been in and out of one of the worst teams in Ligue 1 this season.

Doesnt seem like the sort of risk Conte would take

The assumption that we’re paying for him this summer
I mean that’s literally what some people are posting
