Transfer speculation

there's quite a lot more to being a role model than being a good player

Well I never said he should be a role model. I said he brings experience, footballing experience

And anyway, I don't know what in particular you are referring too regarding him not being a good role model. Having sex with prostitutes when he was younger? Being sent off a few times? Having a dodgy hair transplant? I seriously don't think anyone is that bothered by his past

Plenty of footballers cheat on their wives and girlfriends, they gamble, they drink heavily, get sent off, dive and con refs etc. No-one is perfect

We are mate... royally fecked

I've said it before but no one seems to be able to answer

Who has anyone signed who would make our first 11 stringer???

I think this is the point, we have a very good side ( which should get even better) and as you say we will struggle to replace any of our team. But you know that fans at this time of the years always want to see signings and for us to spend money, i wonder if they would be so keen if it was their money we would spend?

like i said, we'll agree to disagree

Well that's always the challenge

Fans wants signings even if there no better than what they have

whilst that last part is probably a fair question im not sure really matters, because it is our rivals they have gone to and if they improve our rivals teams then it makes our job of finishing above them harder...

You make a good point mate for sure, however i still think that most ( if not all) of our players are young enough to improve and if they do we stand a good chance of staying above them.

fans want to see the team progress and improve - transfers are just a bigger sign of that happening than the natural development of players already here so there's there's nothing wrong with wanting to see transfer activity imo

Well in a way it is fans who pump money into football via expensive tickets, tv subscriptions and merch. So it is their money clubs are spending, or in Tottenhams case not spending :)

I agree with that but only if a signing is beneficial to the team

I think the recent transfer activity by Everton as an example is making the whole market scewed . At a guess I'll say that Everton have made as many transfers as the top 6 combined ..... and it makes others slightly more desperate for similar activity

Not having that debate again, i pay my season ticket money over because i want to see my team play football not because i think they should or expect them go out and buy the latest superstar on the block.

Of course, that goes without saying but if you don't make any signings that's a potential area of improvement that you have missed out on.

I guess also this is quite a quite window for us in the press with regards to being linked to certain players, so it's hard to get any idea of what we're looking to achieve this window. Which probably adds to the frustration for some

It is an opportunity to improve but only if there are players available that we can get and afford who will make us better

It's why I look at who others have signed to see if any would make us better, and some would improve our squad but not our first 11

Pretty much all the big transfers so far would improve our squad, very few, if any would improve the first XI - maybe Silva at City.

Obviously it's not realistic to expect us to be buying that level of player for the squad but we can shop on a tighter budget and still have a good chance of improving nonetheless, as once you get past our match day squad of say 16 players there is a bit of a tail off in quality (of course those players outside the 16 will have potential but not the immediate ability we can call on when in a jam)

Yeah agree with all of that except maybe most of the Everton signings who wouldn't dent our squad. To be fair I've not seen Lindehof of united play either.

But for me as we're not mega rich we have a need to buy genuine quality with the least amount of risk

I think was reported as a signing on fee which would be paid by the club signing the player - if his contract was paid out by United then that would be a separate deal and nothing to do with the transfer.

Signing on fees don't count towards wage budgets as far as I'm aware though am happy to be proven wrong on that
They absolutely do. Signing on fees are not paid as a lump sum but instead split into installments and spread over the length of a player's contract. They are often also referred to as a 'loyalty bonus'. If a club sells a player without that player having asked for a transfer then the club are liable to pay the remaining installments of the loyalty bonus, however if the player makes an official (written) transfer request then they forgoe the remaining installments (assuming they do get sold).

Typically player wages are reported in £s per week and include both salary and loyalty bonus combined.

The rumoured £15 million payoff from Man Utd will just be the remaining installments of his signing on fee/loyalty bonus from the last contract that he signed there.

Well it's the same transfer policy we've had since he joined so why should he all of a sudden now decide he's not happy with it? Think it's pretty obvious he has a cohesive relationship with Levy....
Although I don't agree with AdamB, the first couple of years was about building a solid foundation, which he has done to above expectations. Now it's about that last step, winning something. For that I think we would need to add a top quality player or two. But we're not paying enough to attract those kind of established players. Our hope lies in that we can find another gem that comes in and performs at the highest level.
