Transfer speculation

Real Madrid have offered Tottenham a deal to sign midfielder Mateo Kovacic in an effort to fund a move for Monaco striker Kylian Mbappe, according to reports.

Mbappe is one of the most in-demand players in world football with a host of clubs thought to be monitoring his progress, including Liverpool and Arsenal.

The 18-year-old’s form in his breakthrough season was incredible with 15 league goals in the 2016-17 campaign, helping Monaco win Ligue 1 and progress to the semi-finals of the Champions League.

With interest in the striker ramping up from PSG in particular, Real Madrid have made him a priority signing this summer.

The Metro claims that it could take as much as €150 million (£132m) to prise Mbappe away from the French side with Monaco holding out for as much money as possible.

And, with Mbappe set to cost a world-record fee, Real have been forced to consider selling midfielder Kovacic, according to the Evening Standard.

The 23-year-old only made 19 starts last season under Zinedine Zidane and has now been offered out to clubs around Europe, including Tottenham.

Cheatski have signed Rudiger from Roma. Man U, Man C, Liverpool, Arse, Everton have all strengthened already...I really hope Poch is ok with our transfer policy given that losing him would take us back years and it would be typical-Spurs for that to happen....whenever we've seemed to be making progress in the last 20-30 years, usually something comes us to take us backwards!

Dust off the panic button

Although I don't agree with AdamB, the first couple of years was about building a solid foundation, which he has done to above expectations. Now it's about that last step, winning something. For that I think we would need to add a top quality player or two. But we're not paying enough to attract those kind of established players. Our hope lies in that we can find another gem that comes in and performs at the highest level.

Should buy sessesgnon for whatever it costs as that lad has everything and will just get better and better under Poch

Well I never said he should be a role model. I said he brings experience, footballing experience

And anyway, I don't know what in particular you are referring too regarding him not being a good role model. Having sex with prostitutes when he was younger? Being sent off a few times? Having a dodgy hair transplant? I seriously don't think anyone is that bothered by his past

Plenty of footballers cheat on their wives and girlfriends, they gamble, they drink heavily, get sent off, dive and con refs etc. No-one is perfect

Footballers' sins are often small fry compared to the people that own the clubs they play for, too. Abramovich raped a country and literally killed people during his rise from a nobody to an unbelievably wealthy oligarch. Sheikh Mansour rules over a country that brutally mistreats imported wage laborers, imprisons dissidents and runs a very real race-based class system. Prior to that, Thaksin Sinawatra committed large-scale human rights abuses, including the abduction and torture (and possibly murder) of political dissidents during his time as prime minister of Thailand. And Blackpool are run by a convicted rapist, for Christ's sake.

I draw the line at unprovoked assault, more or less (thugs like Deeney and Gerrard get little sympathy from me) - but cheating on their spouses, gambling to excess, drinking heavily and hiring prostitutes....I'd wager a far greater share of the population has committed or been tempted to commit those everyday sins than they will willingly admit to. Not at all behaviour that anyone should be teaching their kids to emulate, definitely not, but these are little sins in the wider context - the sort that every Tom, dingdong and Harry in England has either committed or considered committing at some point. Not remotely comparable to the awful stuff many club owners get up to.

However, in the context of what we are right now, @billyiddo might have a point too - although footballers like Rooney aren't really exceptionally bad people, we seem to have a notably blemish-free bunch at Spurs right now. Our striker and future captain is a lovely bloke who's about to marry his childhood sweetheart and literally epitomizes what it is to be a role model worth looking up to - humble, driven, loyal and just a great bloke all-round. Same goes for our present captain, too. The rest of our players are mostly young lads and a sprinkling of older heads who also seem to behave themselves very well, and seem like down-to-earth, amiable chaps - although I've always held that what they get up to in their free time shouldn't be our concern unless they bring the club's name into disrepute, they seemingly haven't done anything during the time they've been here that can be described as something *outside* the everyday life of rich young 20-somethings.

I agree that footballers' little sins aren't worth hounding them over in many cases, because it's just them doing what half the blokes in England have probably seriously considered doing in many cases. But, nonetheless, we're in a fortunate situation here where many of our players *can* definitely be role models in the traditionally-understood, squeaky-clean sense - why dilute that if we're in such a fortunate situation?

(Also, if having a dodgy hair transplant is an unforgivable sin, a lot of our lads probably qualify or are on the verge of qualifying - Eriksen's been at it, I suspect, and Kane and Alli both have struggling hairlines that might need topping up sooner rather than later. :p )

I'm not arguing with the fact that a player of top quality is required, I'm saying Poch isn't going to leave because of our transfer policy because Man Utd et al have started splashing the cash. He knows our limitations and is comfortable with it. Maybe not forever but for the foreseeable future....

Manchester United are reportedly ready to beat Chelsea to another of their top summer transfer targets after agreeing a £35million fee for Monaco star Tiemoue Bakayoko.

Having seemingly beaten the Blues to £75m Romelu Lukaku, despite Chelsea’s last-ditch efforts to land their former striker, it would now appear that United have stolen a march over Bakayoko too.

Antonio Conte is said to be fuming over Chelsea’s inability to land Lukaku, so much so that the Stamford Bridge outfit have decided not to sell midfielder Nemanja Matic to United due to their anger over the Belgium striker’s imminent Old Trafford switch.

That stance, however, has forced United to look elsewhere for a defensive midfielder and they have turned their attentions to former target Bakayoko, according to the report in the Daily Star.

The 22-year-old was thought to be close to a move to Stamford Bridge but United have leapt to the front of the queue for the France international and look set to anger their Premier League rivals once again.

Chelsea may also come off second best to United in their efforts to land Real Madrid star James Rodriguez, with Jose Mourinho once again tipped to beat Conte to the playmaker, according to a report on Sunday.

There was at least some good news for Chelsea on Sunday after they sealed the deal for Roma defender Antonio Rudiger.

The Germany star was signed for a deal which could rise to £34m, penning a five-year contract with the Premier League champions.

Man U lost Zlatan. Arse look very likely to lose Sanchez. Everton lost Lukaku. We've lost exactly no one.

Man C have one of the oldest squads around and have been desperate for changes. We have one of the youngest squads around and should rely on continued player development as a path to improvement.

Liverpool had a squad barely large enough for league football, they had to sign players to compete in Europe.

We have a highly functional squad that perhaps 2-3 squad/rotation/backup roles should be upgraded on. Those other teams had gaping holes in their starting line-ups. The richer clubs around us spending a lot of money is entirely unsurprising. We knew this was going to happen. If this should influence our strategy it should have done so 2 months ago because we already knew about it.

He can't develop players i actually think he ruins them.

I dont think he sees it as part of his job. He buys, then coaches those players. If it doesn't work, he moves on, much the richer. Has no regard for fans or who he works for. He thinks they are lucky to have him.

Loathsome parasite!

In my continuing series of 'players who vaguely fit my idea of who it's possible for us to sign', does anyone have any idea how Marcel Sabitzer plays? Austrian player for Red Bull Leipzig - 23 years old, plays across the front line (was used as a support strike in Lepizig's 2015/2016 2.Bundesliga campaign, and a right winger in their successful Bundesliga campaign last year). What little you can find about him online indicates that he's very quick, a dribbler and a finisher very much in the Son mould. Well-built (1.78m tall, apparently) and has decent numbers over the last two years, albeit nothing spectacular in the vein of his team-mates Timo Werner (who we were linked with a couple of seasons ago, iirc) and Emil Forsberg.

The few English-language articles about him are pretty damn positive about his ability and potential (http://outsideoftheboot.com/2016/09/29/scout-report-marcel-sabitzer-the-talented-young-austrian/ , for example), and he was pretty much a constant in RBL's 16/17 side going by his appearances across all competitions - additionally, a few of his goals and assists are scattered around various Bundesliga compilations uploaded by the official Bundesliga channel (which is very good, btw), and they paint a generally positive picture of his movement, awareness and speed, if nothing else. But direct analyses of him are somewhat sparse on the ground (I don't even think there's a bricky Europop-accompanied highlights video of his 16/17 season anywhere on Youtube, and I've bloody checked)...and that's surprising given how much attention RBL received last year and how well-known his team-mates (Werner, Forsberg and Keita chief among them) are.

In the event that he's actually good - Red Bull are bloody loaded, so they might not want to sell him, but from what I can gather (from transfermarkt, mainly) his last contract extension (to 2021) was signed when RBL were still in the 2.Bundesliga (early 2016), so he can't be on too much wages-wise. And we could offer him a hefty bump if they do turn out to be low - and the fee might not be extortionate (I'm guessing 20m+, but that's not *much* in this market, per se) given his respectable but not *outstanding* goals and assists tallies.

This would be one of those possible 'potential' signings more than a direct first-team addition, but it would still be a pretty high-profile move given that he'd probably cost 20m+ and come from a CL club in RBL. He could bring pace, physicality and the ability to improve given his age - plus, it's another Austrian to stick alongside Wimmer. :p And given that he's got a lower profile than some of our other mooted targets, it's less likely that we would get blown out of the water if we did make a move for him, and it's more likely that he might consent to rotating with Son and our other AMs. But it's all dependent on him actually being, y'know, worth the potential - and as I said, I have no idea if he's actually that good given that I haven't watched RBL and the internet doesn't have much on him.

So, does anyone know if Marcel Sabitzer is any good? :p

Exactly. Who of the players that our rivals have bought would improve the first team?

Would you really be happier if Levy was spending £70m on Keita? Or £60m on VVD? £30m on the racist Salah?

I am happy to give Winks, 2CV and Onomah a chance rather than spend £160m we don't have. And continue our strategy of buying potential. We only need 1 or 2 to work out...

Would you really be happier if Levy was spending £70m on Keita?

Well, yeah. :p

Or £60m on VVD?

Ditto? :)

£30m on the racist Salah?

Huh? Sorry, I'm not quite sure what the background is here. Why is he a racist?

Overall, if Levy is dumping that sort of money on those players, it's because he thinks we can afford it - so I wouldn't really mind if he did sign those players in those hypothetical scenarios you mentioned. :p

However, it's an open question if moves for Keita and VVD will actually happen this window anyway - might be a step too far, even in this climate.

Refused to shake hands when Chelsea played an Israel team yet happily took a salary of a jew....
