Tottenham Hotspur V Brentford

Sorry to disagree Steff. Today we sat deeper with the defensive pivot sitting deeper and holding their position rather than joining the press and being caught out of position.

Don't be sorry to disagree, I'd just ask that you consider the players playing. Again, a fit in rhythm Bentancur makes a huge difference. The FBs have been holding their relative fire for some time. In fact, I'd say that along with no individual errors, it might well have taken these few weeks to adjust to this slightly more conservative approach. You don't spend 18 months playing a specific way only for a pretty big adjustment to work first time.

Yes, worked really well today, but we have been doing this/looking to execute this for some weeks now.

Great to see the togetherness with a huddle after the whistle. Looked genuine, no posing for the camera

Results may be brick lately, but the squad is keeping the spirit together
Perhaps this forum and our fans in general should have a huddle and create some togetherness. Because Ange isn't going anywhere this season, Levy isn't going anywhere this season, so if we could focus on getting right behind the boys and generate the special atmosphere at games we know we can instead of toxic atmospheres with 'Levy out' and whatever else we could still do something special this season.

We still have everything to play for....

Djed Spence tore into the Brentford half a few times today too, with Porro high the other side. Bentancur was excellent, and generally we certainly modified how often we 'raided' like that (as we have been for several weeks). I really think the main difference today was Dragusin's absence. Both CBs were comfortable and error free on the ball.

When one went, we had a holder in the middle, that’s what’s new.

Dragusin has been great lately. Their crosses might not have caused such chaos had he been around today. Swings and roundabouts.

Agreed.

I have much love for that lovely brave man.
We were more solid without him IMO.
Thing is I don't think Davies is necessarily better on the ball. But the combination of Biss and Bentancur in front of them gives us a better balance in terms of not losing the ball in front of the defence. Sarr is not a defensive midfielder and doesn't work in the pivot imo.

I have to admit I was tearing my hair out in the second half. We was doing a soft low block and we could not get possesion at all for long periods of time. Ball up to Richy - lost, ball to Son - Lost. Midfield sitting back off them to proctect the wide areas to not close enough for 2nd balls. Then when we did sit in the block due to Brentford possesion we still allowed them to get a good cross in. I think we rode our luck in terms of how the crosses came in.

The positives were Spence, Kinsky, Gray playing well. Porro still with some brain farts at times. The connnection up front without Solanke is off. We need more threat from them over the top or in behind. They all look so tired. Brentford is a hard place to win, we kept a clean sheet and well Thanks Feck cos we needed it badly.

We are hanging in. Players starting to come back and we have Danso coming in. Big week coming up. I dont see how we win at Anfield but we never know. Villa for me look average so I hope we can win that game.

Davies, for me, is better on the ball than Dragusin. Archie was in his favoured right side today. Spence is an excellent player in possession. Bentancur has been in and out for a while and we know he struggles without some sense of rhythm. We got 'good Yves' today.

Recently, we've had to play midfields of Bergvall, Sarr and Deki/Maddison/Bissouma...how often since we stopped bombing the FBs on have we been able to play Biss and Bentancur? I think this is their first Prem start together in 2025. I stand by my observation that we have absolutely modified in recent weeks, but the combo of
adjustment, players available, and errors have continued to conspire against us until today.

Re: Sarr I agree. He is a marauding 8 and showed that today.

Re: Liverpool. We just have to not lose ;-)

We have not pushed our FBs high for a few weeks now my friend. We have also looked to sit deeper for large stretches of games in that time. The reason people are seeing it today is because we won.
Agreed. Two big differences are the game state and how the opposition play. Take the Elfsborg and Hoffenheim games as examples. Against Hoffenheim we defended deep for significant periods, allowed quite a few crosses. Against Elfsborg we pushed high.

Biggest differences being that we were ahead in one and the other was a draw along with the quality of the opposition and how they played.

Quite a few instances today where had we lost the ball it could have been a similar outcome as one of the Leicester goals. Quite a few instances where they played through our press and our full backs got overload on. But we defended well enough and the chances Brentford created they didn't take. Quite a few crosses today that could have been a goal.

Personally I don’t think our performance today was better than any other match - just got lucky that Brentford didn’t take their chances, and we got a weird own goal. And I say that as an Ange fan and general optimist!

Very happy with the 3 pts though. Hopefully gives everyone a lift, especially going into Liverpool.
Alternatively a bit unlucky in some of those other games?

Thought it was a close game that could have gone either way. That's been true for quite a few of our losses too.

Getting the first goal was vital.

Felt like we sat much deeper today. The stats on possession and shots will probably show that?

Brentford should receive a fine from the Premier League for building such a silly little stadium in an East West orientation which means the sun blasts directly into the keeper's eyes during winter months.
They should be forced to either build a sun screen, or re-orient their ground north south, or forfeit the next 100 games.

That was a hard watch, Brentford looked the better side throughout.

Son ...directly involved for both goals, in a game where we had very few chances
Moore ...got pushed around like a boy, some more growing up to do
Richy...I can hold up the ball netter than him. Postecoglu got him playing to his weakness
Grey... are we converting our prized young talent into a CB? Pretty good at it, lots of crucial blocks in the first half
Spence ... growing from strength to strength. Going to be hard for udogie to get his place back
Kulu ...typical surging runs and combines well but missed a couple of good chances
Benta...cut out and intercepted well in midfield, what a through pass

This didn't look like angeball at all and we won.
I was expecting more from them to be honest, considering they are quite good at home and score. Granted they had chances, but end of day they didn't score and we stuck on in there. It wasn't pretty, but at last something fell our way

Temporarily reorienting the earth or sun should be on the table too...

(Shotout to anyone who's read/seen "What if" by the xkcd guy).

Fairly even, albeit they won the corner numbers (even though we scored from one of ours LOL)...

Possession - Brentford = 54% Us = 46%
Total shots - Brentford = 20 Us = 14
On target - Brentford = 3 Us = 2 (albeit that doesn't seem right as I remember at least one save?)
Corners - Brentford = 10 Us = 3
Saves - Brentford = 1 Us = 3

I think their XG was quite high, that Mbuemo chance probably stacked that?

I think the possession stats have been fairly similar for a little while now??? There again, me edging into stat-land should not be trusted LOL!
