The all new Striker thread..

According to some West Brom ITK on twitter, Berahino's expected to sign a new contract before the end of the window. A 'changed man', apparently. Which I can believe: if the news about him sacking Aidy Ward is true, and if Pulis has gotten into his head and helped him mature, then the logical thing for him to do would be to get his head down for a season, do well for Pulis, shed most of the unwarranted suspicions about him, and then push for a move next summer, with his reputation as a model professional and a decent employee (unlike, say, Sterling and his public tantrums) solidified by said season.

little comparison of the players mentioned using their best recent season

Berahino is the one we must go for. Is versatile in the sense that he can play on the wings and gives us another option as a striker. Already has experience playing with Kane.

Looking at the stats above we need to keep Kane first and foremost. Any other striker we bring in will play second fiddle to him so whether it's an experienced striker or a young promising one they will have to be happy to bench sit for a lot of the time.

I think we need another top striker. We cant rely on Kane as the only striker. None of the top 4 have just one main striker. Would be foolish to put all our faith in Kane and have strikers playing second fiddle. Need to mix it up for different games. Plus one injury be it big or small would need a top striker to replace Kane and the fact that form comes into it.

United spent most of last season with maybe half of one!!!

But on a serious note of Berahino does sign on and show maturity at west brom the fair play to the lad. Can't begrudge anyone recognising the error of their ways and dealing with it

But Chelsea has Costa and Remy
arsenal had Sanchez and Giroud, Welbeck withWalcott coming on.
City had Aguero, Dzeko. Ok, United had Rooney more so from Midfield but they also had Falcao and Van Persie who had injuries and wasn't being played. If rumours are we are getting rid of Soldado and Ade that would leave just Kane.

I think we need a Benteke type player who would be number one striker fighting with Kane, and an Austin for back up.

now would be the time to go for Berahino. I think one more good season and he will be in the 40 mill bracket next summer with all the top 4 after him

Not sure if this has been mentioned but if Villa are interested in Townsend and we would like Benteke then why don't we offer £20m and Townsend?

Sounds too simple to me.
I see some valuations for Townsend at about the £15-16mil mark. Now personally I think that is a little high, but for arguments sake lets assume that is close to what we could recoup for him. That would mean you are pricing Benteke at £35-36mil which is way way too high IMO. I rate Benteke but Townsend and €10-12mil would be closer to his real worth I would think.

Berahino is a no brainer for me. He can play throught the middle and on the wing and has experience of playing along with Kane. He also adds pace up front which we lack

i suppose out of the players linked its Austin v Llorente for the CF position

for me with Llorente the gamble is two fold, was last seasons poor goal return a one off or a sign of things to come and will he be able to adapt to the EPL. with Austin the gamble would be on whether last season was a fluke

for the 3rd forward position it could be Rodriguez v Berahino - able to play both as a CF and from the wide positions. Rodriguez has the injury issue and Berahino atm is all potential and yet to show any real quality form for his club on a consistent basis (afaik)

The thing about Austin is that he is prolific in the Championship and I have now doubt he would be snapped up with a decent fee from one of the relegated sides like West Ham for 10m. Llorente, there is no such fall back option because he is already 30.. and probably 32 before we would move on whereas Austin would be 28 in two years.. his prime.

Austin is by far the better option.

Yes but I think when swap deals are involved you probably pay more for the player you want coming in. Otherwise you just pay their valuation of £32.5m in one go.

we're not going to be investing 30m+ on a second choice forward - either upfront cash or split cash/asset, not when 30m is likely to be 50% of our entire budget (if not higher) and we have actual first team positions which need improving, frankly it'd be madness

I have wanted Berahino for a while now, but that video has made me want even more now. He has great vision and passing link up play something Defoe lacked, his shots are all almost all placed, Defoe just hit as hard as he could. Berahino looks the real deal. Infact a lot better than a certain London kid throwing his toys out the pram in scouse land.

I cannot believe a Champions League team has not come in for him yet.. I would be on the phone this afternoon.

I think that's still a little high.

If we're assuming £15-16m for Townsend then another £5m should be our top end.

Realistically I'd say Townsend is worth £10-12m (including English player idiot tax) so another £8m should be our limit.

Like I mentioned, I think he's best served by staying at West Brom for another season and maturing into both a more complete striker and a responsible young man under Pulis. I think he realises this too. And I think that as long as Aidy Ward is his agent (I believe Berahino's only letting him go once his contract ends in November), any big clubs will be a bit hesitant to approach him anyway, judging by what's happening with Sterling.

Benteke Age 24 42 league goals in 88 matches (Villa) £32.5m

Llorente Age 30 23 league goals in 65 matches (Juventus) £10m

While Llorente is more affordable I think Benteke will give us more in the long run despite the exorbitant price.

For me Berahino is my first choice and Benteke my second
