Enrique and Bassong played about the same amount of games that season. Bassong at LB would have been a rare sighting IMO. We've played him there a couple of times as well and he always looks uncomfortable. His involvement in the preseason games so far is more likely down to a lack of options a LB and a surplus of CBs.

Giovani Dos Santos believes he can resurrect his career at Tottenham with Andre Villas-Boas now in the Spurs hot-seat, claiming Harry Redknapp wouldn’t speak to him during his time at White Hart Lane.

The 23-year-old trickster is yet to meet his new Portuguese boss and is currently on Olympic duty with Mexico – springing off the bench to score twice in his side’s win over Gabon on Sunday.

Dos Santos made just 13 appearances last season, scoring two goals, and has been sent on loan to Ipswich, Galatasaray and Racing Santander since arriving in London from Barcelona in 2008.

He has made just 17 Premier League appearances throughout his Tottenham career but with Villas-Boas now at the helm, Dos Santos believes he can force his way into the first-team after his Olympic campaign with Mexico.

“Everything is changing at Tottenham – there’s a new manager and it could mean I have an opportunity this season,” said Dos Santos, who has already won 59 caps for Mexico.

“I have to go back and talk with the manager and see what he thinks and then we’ll decide what my future is.

“I still haven’t spoken to him yet and I’ll wait until the Olympics has finished until I do that.

“I’ve got one year left on my contract and until then I have no idea what’s going to happen either way.

“I’m very happy in England and I would like to stay in this country but the most important thing for me is playing in games. It’s always important to playing in your team as it gives you more opportunities to be selected for your country.”

Dos Santos believes he was marginalised by Redknapp during his tenure in north London and while he stayed with Spurs for the season, he featured just seven times in the Premier League.

And Dos Santos, who has been linked with a move back to Spain this summer after impressing during his loan spell with Racing Santander, has revealed his relationship with Redknapp was non-existent.

He added: “All players want opportunities and it was very frustrating that I didn’t play in many games for the old manager.

“I almost never spoke with him so he never explained any reasons why he wasn’t playing me.”

According to Liverlol fans, he's 'the new Figo'. After Dirt Kuyt, of course.

Andros Townsend has more talent than him.

:-k Not sure your comparison is fair, for a start Townsend has 4 years further experience.

Sterling is one of the young players that everyone in football is talking about too

I do believe though that this story in the Mail is about him getting a new contract from Liverpool, unless he is homesick and wants back to London.

I remember seeing him in that Under 18s Champions League thing when we won 1-0, he looked the best player on the pitch by a considerable distance.

So did I, and he was. I tipped him for a big future...but we all know how good my predictions are!

Nice quotes from Giovani. He's undoubtedly a very good player. With a new manager, we might as well have a "new player" in him now. I sure hope so, as he's been brilliant every time I've seen him play for Mexico over the last few years.

I think all comments about GDS should be banned from GG given that he polarises opinion and it just starts the same old arguments!

All I would say is that just because you added the 'undoubtedly' bit to the bolded section above it doesnt make it true. I think its very much in doubt! He's scored goals for Mexico, though mainly against tinpot central american teams, but done very very little at club level

I agree I wouldn't say he is undoubtedly a very good player. What I would say is that he undoubtedly has a high level of basic 'technique'. He also has a burst of acceleration. However, he has yet to display the attitude, application and intelligence to be a player that can start week-in, week-out in one of Europe's top leagues IMO.

Those quotes from Gio seem to be completely different to previous..

Seems that he is willing to give spurs a chance if spurs give him a chance. Can only hope he gets on well in training and becomes a decent option for that attacking RW spot.

I think he has the footballing ability, yet he has never managed to apply it.

Wonder what will happen to GDS' contract and how those discussions will impact what will happen to him?

One year left on his deal so presume we'll either sell him now or try to extend it, at least for 1 year. However if I was GDS there's no way I would agree a contract extension unless I thought I had a future at Spurs

Knitpicking. ;) No, actually I agree with you completely. He has the skills, but he lacks the attitude and application, which I hope AVB can instill in him. Would just hate to see us let Gio go too early without giving him a chance.

I imagine with a year left on his deal he probably thinks "F*ck it - wait a year (or six months) and get much better wages on a new contract elsewhere"

Redknapp ITK...

Harry says he would have got Carroll in a heart beat. top talent that will score goals

Still disappointed but looking forward to his next job. Thinks we will really struggle to make the top 6 unless we replace Modric and bring in 2-3 top players

He also said he was keeping an eye on Dempsey and Walcott

...........

wouldnt it be funny if GDS has an outstanding year and then leaves on a free

No doubt that is a factor in his thinking. But he could also be genuine in taking the second chance. If it works its good for him and he is in a better position to get a new contract with Spurs or someone else. If it doesn't work he can get a pay-off next year. He does say he is happy in England - it must be all those clubs he can't pass - and AVB should be a very different type of manager to work for, better for some players and not for others.

Regardless of how genuine, I can't see Levy liking the prospect of him running his contract down. I'd expect him to jump at a decent offer from Spain.
