There is a lot to be said for a manager who can get more out of a player by fitting him in the team. At centre back we have the recent examples of Dunne-Distin and Dann-Johnson. Both were first class pairings but none of the players could reproduce the form without their partner.

We naturally aspire to quality players who show star capabilities, but there is room for solid squad players. Fergie has been able to use a number of players (Brown, O'Shea, Evans, etc ... possibly Fletcher and Park) who don't meet the star criteria very effectively.
