Is it? :-s

It could mean it's either way.

The last thing we heard from two days ago was that we were ahead of Arsenal and that he was interested in joining us.

That hasnt changed, nothing new on Arsenal making an offer, nothing from the player saying he isnt interested and the most important thing is that the Lyon chairman didnt deny the offer..

Not saying Lloris wouldn't be a good signing, but do we really need a new keeper this season? Year or two down the line, it's more than likely we will, but Friedel was solid last season.

I think we do. We wanna battle on three or four fronts. Brad could do cup games and Lloris or another keeper does league games. Friedel has one more season.

Carroll is a bully, that is what makes him an interesting Plan B (note I didn't say plan A).

Unlike a Bent (to answer the early posters question), he occupies defenders, bullies them, wins a lot in the air. The last couple of games for Pool last year showed what he is capable of in form.

There are several PL teams where the defenders are very aggressive (Stoke) and get at opposition attackers, someone ike Carroll would be a decent option.

Trick with Carroll (like Bent), is the cost, at >15M, not a good buy, at sub 10M, good option.

Carroll has no ability on the ball, can't pass, can't lay it off, technically very poor. He doesn't suit a team playing passing football.

You might as well give Dawson or Kaboul a cameo up front if things get that desperate.

I thought English football evolved beyond that stage the time Robson finally decided to favour Beardsley over Hateley.

Real Madrid's £40m offer for Luka Modric paves way for Joao Moutinho's move to Tottenham Hotspur

Real Madrid have bid more than £40 million to sign Luka Modric from Tottenham Hotspur, paving the way for the midfielder to finally leave.

Paris Saint-Germain and Chelsea are also attempting to sign the 26-year-old Croatia international but it is understood that a deal could be struck with Real in the next few days.

Real had cooled their interest, after an inquiry earlier this summer, in which they had offered cash plus Turkey midfielder Nuri Sahin but talks are understood to have resumed over a straight cash offer.

Spurs chairman Daniel Levy has been quoting an asking price of £50 million for Modric but the Real offer is expected to be the best one he will receive with the player preferring to move to Spain rather than join PSG.

Levy is adamant that if Modric quits Spurs then he will also leave the Premier League and the chairman will not even countenance an offer from Chelsea whose interest may, indeed, wane now that they have agreed a deal to sign the exciting young Brazil playmaker Oscar for around £22 million.

That move came about after Chelsea hijacked Spurs’ bid to sign the 20 year-old from Internacional and should Modric go it is likely that Spurs will make a move for Joao Moutinho although they will not meet Porto’s asking price of more than £30 million for the Portuguese midfielder. A deal, however, does seem likely for Moutinho to eventually move to White Hart Lane.
On Wednesday Spurs’ new head coach, Andre Villas-Boas, confirmed that the club would listen to offers for Modric after he once again informed them he would like to leave. “The interest Luka is getting from a number of different clubs is the same as he got last year,” Villas-Boas said.

“Luka is a player of major importance for the football club and that is why he attracts so many clubs. At the moment, it’s in the hands of the chairman to accept the right proposition.

"Chelsea was involved last year so there is nothing new in the situation. If the player’s ambition is to move to another club, we can respect that decision, but there are club interests that the chairman will defend and I think only when the right offer is met, there will be more news.”

Villas-Boas, who coached Moutinho at Porto, added of the midfielder: “He was one of the most important players of Euro 2012, he had a fantastic tournament, and he’s an important player for Porto. It doesn’t mean that it’s the only target, but if something happened of course he’s the player we look on with interest.”

Moutinho has already expressed an interest in joining Villas-Boas at Spurs, who are waiting to hear whether Emmanuel Adebayor will join the club on a permanent basis. Spurs, who had the Togo international on loan last season, have made an offer to the striker, who is free to leave Emirates Marketing Project, but nothing is agreed as yet.

“The squad has some fragilities, particularly on the striker position – we are looking for somebody else,” Villas-Boas said. “We are extremely willing to have Adebayor on board with us. It’s just a remote possibility at the moment.”

However Spurs have no interest in signing Daniel Sturridge, who is thought to be for sale at Chelsea. The club also intend to keep Rafael van der Vaart, despite interest from Bundesliga clubs, although that may change if a replacement is signed.

Spurs, who on Wednesday confirmed that former Germany international, and their former midfielder, Steffen Freund, would be Villas-Boas’s No 2, are also expected to make an announcement soon on the future of Ledley King, who is expected to retire from football.

Actually, JJetset's pretty much said that Defoe is leaving and we're getting two strikers ALONGSIDE Adebayor, so we can start wishlisting not one but two forwards :)

However, Modric for 40m wouldn't pay for Moutinho + a big name striker. The Modric minus Moutinho difference will likely be about 15m, which is juuuust about what Adebayor's "extra" wages (presuming he's on 150k where a standard striker of his calibre would be taking 75k) would demand over a four-year contract. Ade for 5m is still a decent deal, but you can see why we're playing hardball on this - in reality, his defacto transfer fee alone is more like 20m. To help offset our wage increases, we're going to have to cut down on squad size - it's absolutely imperative to get Bentley, Jenas, Gallas etc wages off our bill.

I assume that one striker would be competition for Ade in the central position and the other must be a wing forward who can start games. I think both will be relatively out of the blue - ie not Leandro, Sturridge (both of whom JJetset has insinuated will not be coming), Remy, Higuain or Lewandowski :)lol: c'mon guys, let's be a little realistic okay?). Muller and Schurrle I can believe, at least partly because Chelsea were interested in Schurrle earlier so we'd *have* to keep extremely tightlipped on this one given their habit of peevishly snatching anything AVB likes or might like.

It actually scares me how much I hate Durham.

I'm exactly the same but at end of day I always remind myself he's just talking brick on purpose to get a reaction. I just sit happy knowing that he must know deep deep down that he is a brick Journo/pundit and his whole career is built on being a wum
