Re: 1060 pages and a striker, but 113 pages later no more Modric summer transfer thre

Well all summer we knew Modric was going to leave so we could have nipped in to sign then, especially when Utd were focusing on the RVP deal. Maybe if occasionally if we just stopped faffing about...........

It does make you wonder doesn't it. Despite some proclaiming Levy's genius dealmaking qualities. You'd think we would have pre-contracts or some kind of agreement in place with our targets once it became clear that Modric would be off. Wasn't the stance Modric was going nowhere until we had a replacement -so maybe we have already got a player in place now.

Re: 1060 pages and a striker, but 113 pages later no more Modric summer transfer thre

Let's say we can't afford Moutinho, and Man U comes in for Dembele and he goes there (which is a plausible scenario) Who is next on the list of creative/playmaker midfielders?

According to rumour Willian is seen as being able to play central and Isco from Malaga

Re: 1060 pages and a striker, but 113 pages later no more Modric summer transfer thre

Personal terms are quickly agreed when time is short and the player wants a move. Usually these things are more or less sorted with the agent long before (no tapping up, honest).

Re: 1060 pages and a striker, but 113 pages later no more Modric summer transfer thre

All guesstimations obviously but we've spent roughly £21m and brought in £53m+, whilst taking on £200k~ in wages but also shedding over £300k - although with new contracts for Naughton, Caulker and Bale, it's probably a fair bit closer. Combine this with recent windows of consistent negative net spend we should have a decent amount of money to play with. As you said though it's probably all going toward the new stadium though. There's a good chance Dawson is on his way out too so that's another £9m / £50k pw being brought in.

Yep and so if we get in Willian and Dembele then it broadly evens things up in terms of fees and wages in this window. Obviously at a profit if you factor in Daws leaving as well. I think it then also have actually been a half decent window. Look at it in terms of who's gone and who's arrived:

CB: Bassong out, Vertonghan in -------------> big improvement
RB: Charlie out -------------------------------> irrelevant as Naughton is now back
CM: Modric out, Dembele in -------------------> weaker though forced upon us
wide man: Pienaar out, Willian in --------------> big improvement and younger
attacking mid: NK out, Siggy in ---------------> neutral in terms of ability but now have someone motivated and arguably better suited for us
CF: Ade out (loan), Ade in --------------------> neutral (!) though now we own him
Nelson/Khumalo - n/a

The only real downside is being one man lighter up top as we wont have replaced Saha

Re: 1060 pages and a striker, but 113 pages later no more Modric summer transfer thre

Well, bringing Lloris in WOULD allow Willian to play higher up, seeing as we would in fact be playing with a goalkeeper. But so would bringing in M'Vila as a DM. I can see where people get confused about these things...

Maybe Lloris wasn't duty free after all and is still being held up at customs because Levy won't pay the VAT?

VAT would probably be reclaimable given we're a business wouldnt it?

I'm guessing Dembele is not first choice for AVB. Mountinho would be the main target I suspect. My own opinion is that we should move for both player and forget M'Vila. To be honest I haven't seen M'Vila at all but we are well stocked in the DM department.

I've been hoping we'd go after Dembele for the last few windows. He's getting better and better and soon will be unattainable for Spurs, especially if he puts in an few more performances like the Utd one. He was like that against us at the lane last season too.

Re: 1060 pages and a striker, but 113 pages later no more Modric summer transfer thre

How about we started in May when we knew Modric wants out and we need a replacement?

/mind blown

But if did that we could risk having our team being ready by the start of the season and what is the sense in that?

Re: 1060 pages and a striker, but 113 pages later no more Modric summer transfer thre

NOW is the time to go for Dembele. And its right up our street of buying developing potential...

After this window I suspect Dembele will have attracted bigger clubs and be out of our reach. He looks the real deal, we need to go for him now or not at all.

Re: 1060 pages and a striker, but 113 pages later no more Modric summer transfer thre

We don't really know what kind of talks have been had, it's all based on media reports. His name has been mentioned for a while, so I presume we didn't make first contact today.

Not entirely true. The Shakhtar CEO gave an interview on this a few days ago. If you believe him we bid 12m Euros (!) and asked to pay in annual installments. After they rejected this subsequent conversations were described as 'unserious' because we apparently change our position repeatedly.

CB: King out, Vertonghen in ------------------> pluses and minuses, lose a great player, more consistency with CB pairing
CB: Bassong out, Caulker in ------------------> potential improvement

Maybe Levy was close to getting Lloris through customs for free, but ended up being selected for a random body scan and had to brick him out in the drugs toilet?

Re: 1060 pages and a striker, but 113 pages later no more Modric summer transfer thre

Berbatov linked with a move to Fiorentina who finished 13th in Serie A last season

Surely we could offer a better meal than that

Re: 1060 pages and a striker, but 113 pages later no more Modric summer transfer thre

Possible, but unlikely. We will sign players, just hope they are not of the quality Levy landed us with in previous last minute windows (VDV aside).

Well, M'Vila is either a real badass who will give us a cutting edge we haven't seen around here for a long time...or he's a douchebag!

Has had issues with attitude, but fits the Levy test in terms of major potential at just 22yo. Would also fit an AVB system as discussed previously in this thread.

Agreed - let's rather stick with the Premier League behemoths Defoe and Kane

What's that? Someone's trying to re-ignite the Berbatov debate.. Who? Where!? :barnet:
