Son Heung-Min

We didn't have Perisic last season and I suspect Son benefited from the space up front.

Good for us depends on who we replace Son with. Perhaps Trossard is a better option with Perisic and Kane up front. He gets into tights spaces well.

I don't think Perisic is the problem.

Son was at his best in transitions, where Perisic is usually deeper anyway. When we're attacking Perisic usually stays fairly wide, not really getting in Son's way.

I think our lack of threat down the right without Kulusevski (and Doherty) has been a bigger cause. Everyone knows the threat Son poses, if opponents can focus on him and we don't have a good threat down the right it's easier to stop Son. And easier to stop Kane giving Son the world class service wry know he can deliver.

The quality on the ball Kulusevski, Romero, Doherty all bring has also been sorely missed at times.

Son is best in transitions (counters and playing through pressure). At times our transition play has been seen ever so rarely. We still break with quality when we get the chance, but it just doesn't happen often enough. Our better players, better ball players, are key to our transition play and have too often been missing.

Son needs room to play in and having our better players on the pitch, stretching play means there is less space
Add in that some teams just sit deep and say do your worst (villa and Portsmouth did exactly that) and it gives son less room to excel in
When he is flying…. It becomes less of an issue as his confidence is high and he can use his pace and skill
Leicester were chasing the game leaving room
Palace… same
Frankfurt not quite but their defending was awful

It is absolutely no coincidence that once kulu started playing the whole front line looked back to their best. Suddenly we had another threat, the plan of stop kane and son linking up and you stop spurs fell apart. It was similar to when we had Eriksen, holes opened up we could exploit.
In many ways its a credit to Kane and son that their numbers where so good for so long playing without that decent third option, but it was always going to catch up with them.

Yeah I think the fact we've had to chase games so regularly this season encourages teams to adopt a more defensive mindset and maybe sit deeper which means Son is less likely to be in a one on one situation or a shift and hit it situation than he has been in previous seasons.

He's a sports car, a little sensitive and useless in crowded areas but a bit of open road and he's deadly!

A lot of over analysis here. His first touch, passing and decision making have all been terrible. None of this is down to a system.
The system can make him less effective but he isn't even doing the basics at a decent level.

100%
It’s just not his strength when he hasn’t got going

Made we wonder who Son has linked up with the best down the left side? Doesn't feel like anyone has really struck up an understanding with him. Maybe Davies?

He's imo not the easiest to strike up a partnership with for a LB/LWB.

Rose did very well back in the day, but imo more Rose doing his thing and Son doing his thing rather than a great relationship. Reguilon also did well there for a while, but again more Reguilon doing his thing.

It will be very interesting to see what Arsenal do wrt to whether they push up or drop deeper and having someone on Son's toes like they did last season. Kulu is certainly vital, but if he can't make it i think a midfield 3 might be vital to allow Son to roam a bit more.

Maybe we should try Davies at LWB?

Can you imagine the difference to the NLD it could make if Son got himself sorted by then?
That is, able to control the ball again, being able to pass simply to a teammate, no overhit or underhit passes, plus some shooting boots??

We really need him to regain some of that on Sunday

Son's game is built on the transition game. Space helps, a few yards to run at opponents helps, the ability to come in (gives him angles) and switch foot helps.

The worst part of Son's game (and something Conte tries to get all his attackers to do) is receiving the ball with his back to the opposition goal (unlike Kane or Gil who can roll the opponent and change direction).

The mask is clearly bothering him, when you see him play live, the amount of times he's adjusting it is obvious, it's a problem for him, and that's probably affecting his confidence as well.

He was terrible before he was wearing the mask, it's not the reason why he has been so poor.

This is true but it could also true that it currently isn't helping him regain his form

I use to have an old pro boxer work for me and he always reckoned when a man has been really hurt he was never the same, always a bit more careful and looking not to get badly hurt again. Not the same for everyone as Gary Mabbutt came back from that terrible injury and I cant remember it effecting him but it could be that.

Do you think that his basics became worse after he won the golden Boot? Or that part of him didn't change despite scoring loads in the past?

He is best as a solo marauder chasing down a ball or having the space to do his crossovers to crossor cut in to shoot.

He's not known for close control and slow build up play.

I think it's usually easier for the coach to change tactics than ask a player to excel in a system that doesn't use his strengths.

But with Conte this season, I expect son to do a lot of defending and controlled build up play to get players in a position for a perisic cross.

Unfortunately this means a low chance to see son in full flight or opportunities to cut in and shoot. How son is most comfortable scoring goals.

His first touch has never been brilliant but it has gone downhill this season. With Son it was often a case of he would have a terrible touch, pass whatever, but two seconds later he would do something brilliant. We could overlook the bad stuff because of the brilliant stuff and the goals.
Sadly we've only the bad this season.
