OMT *** TOTTENHAM HOTSPUR V WEST HAM *** Sat 19 Oct 2024 • 12:30PM Tottenham Hotspur Stadium •

Yeah, that highlighted it well.
We have seen the same issue in CM for years when you only have 1 player trying to defend, they just get over run and there is too much space around them.

I hope we see 2 sitting more in games. Some we will be able to get away with 2 10's and just attack, but Ange might need to tone down the all out attack all the time. As we looked more attacking with Sarr running from deeper.

It will be interesting to see what sort of ban Kudus gets. If his yellow card was for the pushing with VDV, and that got upgraded to a red, then the one on Sarr is also a red.

So that would be 7 games? 3 for each red card, and an extra due to him getting 2 reds?
Just to be clear though Sarr isn't a sitter and doesn't sit for us and wasn't yesterday, he's been a little bit of everything. He's not truly playing any differently than Maddison just that their innate football skills and attributes lead to differing approaches to the same position.

The balance is different but he's not a DM nor is he ever played as one for Spurs.

He is an old school box to box
An 8 nowadays

No, Sarr isn't a DM, but when we don't have the ball, I think he or who ever plays in that position should drop back and sit with Bissouma/Bentancur to offer more protection.

That's what MOTD highlighted

I probably sound like a broken record at this point.

I'm not protecting VDV and Richi, but players just wouldn't have to do this stuff if the referees started applying the laws of the game. VDV was on the counter and it was minimally a yellow card for the tackle as it was a professional foul as it stopped us breaking away. Then you add the physicality, especially with the kicking out Kudus did in the tackle. He then raised his hands a couple of times after a yellow tackle. I mean, how difficult was it for Madley to get to the conclusion himself that he needed to go straight red?

If the refs continue to blatantly ignore the very laws of the game they are on the pitch for, then the entire system breaks. It feels like an obsession to keep 22 players on the pitch, but what is needed is proper enforcement of the laws.

Then the quality of football and entertainment will improve again.

I think you've hit the tickle my balls with a feather, players are making the refs make a decision. We saw here the ref was just going to book two players for their reactions, one for being kicked in back while on floor and one for disliking being told he's mental. Players and referees must play to rules, if you put your hands in someones face you're off, it doesn't matter if it's a tap or a punch.

When you think about it, these elements of the game are so easily eradicated if the refs brandish the cards. They can legitimately do it as well because the laws of the game endorse these decisions. Example, ref awards a free kick and opposition player stands on the ball stopping a quick free kick. Just get the card out. Stop worrying about how many players are left on the pitch. You'll soon see player and manager behaviour change for the better.

Totally agree but then you have the media muppets such as Ally McCoist yesterday saying he hopes it isn't a red card. The refs live in a world where they are damned if they do and damned if they don't and they feel the pressure. If McCoist and crowd supported the law in the media, if Gallagher etc on Sky Sports gave honest assessments of the refs decisions rather than supporting whatever they did, right or wrong, if there was 'anonymous' retrospective action panel to catch those the refs 'missed' or under-sanctioned then that would take some of the pressure off the in game management. It would all help educate the fans as well who seem to have lost track of the laws. Also the obsession, as you say, with keeping 22 on the pitch and the 'too early to be giving a card' 'made a rod for his own back' BS as well.

He is more defensively minded than Maddison both positionally and tackling. He is more suited to a deep lying midfielder position than Maddison IMHO.

The negative impact of sending offs was never better illustrated than when Arse shut up shop vs Emirates Marketing Project the other week. As a spectacle the game was utterly horrendous.

So maybe, just maybe, instead of sending the player off, refs could be empowered to award a penalty to the opposition REGARDLESS OF WHERE THE VIOLENT CONDUCT HAPPENED ON THE PITCH.

Such a radical a change will never happen of course, which is a shame because it could potentially yield a much fair outcome all round. Not only would the team suffering the violence gain the chance of immediate and tangible compensation, it might also prove a more effective deterrent to violent conduct whilst at the same time protecting the game as a spectatcle by ensuring all 22 players stay on the pitch.

Also, by having to remain on the pitch the offending player would be obliged to run a gauntlet of abuse from the crowd and hopefully also his own team-mates.

Whether the player should miss one or more matches after that might depend on the seriousness of the offence.

Yep, Sky Sports have long forgotten that the product is a ball, 22 footballers and 2 goals. They think their company is the product and the game itself is secondary. It's another RIP moment.

7?
No chance, lets be serious.
The pull back was a yellow. The first kick in the spine was a yellow, the second kick in the spine was a yellow, the hand in VdV face was a red and the hand in Sarr's face was a red.
I make that a claret card; banned for the next 32 Prem games.

He's a good footballer, but those 20 seconds were CRAZY.

Strange question, but what is it that they give to the player of the match? It just looks like a coloured cylindrical tube.
