OMT ** Tottenham Hotspur v Man United 29/9/24 at 4.30pm **

It's easy - and a bit lazy - to cast Werner as the new Bobby Soldado. But I was pleased with his play overall on Sunday.

Took up good positions, made good runs, passed well and planted tasty crosses into the box. Even worked back to defend. Yeah, woulda been great to see him score. But we're seeing a process taking hold. As long as he works within that process, more chances will come. Best thing he can do is stay positive and maybe emulate Harry Kane's post-training routine and work hard on his finishing techniques.

The other bright positive to take from the game is seeing what Kulu can do taking up a more central position. That had to be his best game ever for Spurs. Showed great understanding with Johnson and Maddison. Opens up all sorts of possibilities for Ange to work with moving forward.
There's not a lot wrong with his finishing. It's his temperament, he makes bad decisions in front of goal. He's done it for years. If we accept he's a source of chaos and assists, and don't load him with goal expectation as a fan base we will find him less irritating, but as the wonderful G.Neville said on Sunday, it was obvious he wasn't going to score each time because he just exudes nervousness in front of goal. Instinctive stuff might come off, but a moment to think and he will fluff his lines. GHod knows we have had a few of them. Keane, Defoe, and Pavlyuchenko all were like that, no thought, worldie, a moment to think and they'd hit the keeper half the time.

That domination chart highlights what we've seen in a few games, Spurs are on top but start to tire badly, and Ange lets us struggle for 5-10 mins before making subs. I'm not sure if this is on purpose to really wring out the maximum from those players, or he can't see when players are blowing out their backsides and no longer able to hit maximum dynamic movement.

Valid observation, not sure if it's building players fitness or still easing in the younger/less experienced players (how much/long in game we would like to them on for?)

Is it that clear cut? Cos for me the changes on Sunday weren't tiring players so much as it was simply shifting the emphasis from creativity to solidity. Maddison for Sarr for instance, albeit Sarr got an assist shortly after, was done to add steel and running...

Or a team is getting well beaten and has to up the gears a little to take more risks at 2 down

Precisely my point, running.
In every match we have players absolutely knackered around 60, they are blowing hard and struggling to maintain the exceptional work rate... we watch them tire and tire and make subs 10 minutes later

Indeed, it was pretty clear to me that we were just playing more conservatively. Generally slowing the game down, going sideways and backwards instead of fast passes forwards and were not really pressing them any more.

Hopefully a good sign that we are working to manage our energy for games in what cold (hopefully) be a long season..?

I think that’s what comes from maturity and belief in the system
It’s not a quick solution to embed but it’s exactly what Celtic did when they could

They scored early, and late a lot
Almost played the game in thirds of quarters.
Was more spread out in his first season thanks to Matt OReilly and his penchant to score around 65 mins
I assume it’s tactical

Good signs. I'd love us to be able to portion up the 90 mins into sections where you blitz, slow things down with possession play or deep blocks etc.

The very best coaches over the years i felt had these 'phased' approaches in their locker. Quite important given the number of games in a season a successful team can have as well, especially for teams that routinely employ a press..

Speaking of Matt O'Reilly, where would he play in our team if we'd have signed him @Bedfordspurs ?
I'mm pretty sure there were some minor rumours we were thinking of getting him in months back...

Here is a question and i will probably get a load of pelters for this but would we have performed like that if Son had played? i know some people will say he would have finished the chances Werner had but would he have made those runs and got in those positions? would he have been given the space Werner had? Would he have pressed and been as direct as Werner was? Not aiming criticism at Son what so ever, he has had a decent start to the season but someone different in there did it make a difference?
Son isn't capable of playing to a high level as a winger anymore. So many are in denial about this but it's been the truth for at least a season now. To get the best out of this version of Son, he has to play in the middle.

Age comes to us all.

Thinking back on this game. And after listening to Neville talk about the fact on paper he prefers the spurs players. I look at this United side and the who would I realistically want if we could choose any of them.

I couldn't think of one. I like Garnachio for his talent but not his teamwork. Fernades has his moments but I personally hate his cheating, attitude and work rate. Rashford I liked but he looks so moody all the time. And that's it.

650+ million on that trash.

I've never even heard of most of their squad, let alone rate them. I like Mainoo. Casemiro, Erikson and de Ligt used to be good, but aren't any more. Pass on the rest.

What's really funny was watching a youtube analysis (yes, first mistake) and the guy played the both sides (player wise) are basically the same. Specifically called out Onana/Vic, Romero/Martinez, midfield and front line being much alike. Only point I agreed with was their bench (Eriksen, Casimero being more experienced)

For me, I agree with your three with the caveat, Fernandes two years ago isn't the same guy as now, Rashford is a bricker/less consistent/moody version of Son.

This is why they are stalling on firing ETH, he's spent 600M on players the next manager coming in won't want. In reality it isn't even a question of who would get in Spurs lineup, it's a question of who (if forced to) would an incoming ETH replacement even want, to me -> Starting back line (Shaw not Dalot) , Fernandes, Garnacho, maybe Mainoo (his 15 mins of fame seems to be fading) & Amad. That squad needs a massive overhaul (after having spent 600M)
