Jose Mourinho - SACKED

Does anyone think the players were not really giving it there all yesterday?

It is pretty unthinkable that he has lost some of the dressing room but Son and Kane at the end of the game while we were 1-0 down were barely pushing.

I wish people would stop putting value on the things people say when there is clearly a loaded reason why they would say that. Theyre not being candid and as such should never be used to support your own point.

We're talking about a man Levy has pursued and admired since 2007.

We tried promoting from within with Jol. We tried the sexy foreign manager with Ramos. We tried the good old English manager with Harry. We tried the young up and coming manager with AVB/Poch. We've now gone for a proven winner.

If all of them only produce a league cup between them, eventually you have to question the man appointing them. The approaches have been varied and fairly all encompassing. The only constant has been Levy and ENIC.

The man appointing them is fine but in reality in the game you need a bottomless out of money to make a real difference to win things. The sole measure now is trophies (the lack of will always be sued against Pochs “success”)
Unless or until we have owners who are happy to fund the club the tide won’t turn. last year I believe Poch was a asked because of VAR. Yep it sounds daft but certain key games which would have given us momentum went against because of VARs failings (Leicester and Saudi Sportswashing Machine) and it stopped Pochs team getting a run going
This year we would have spent considerable money if we had the ground open (as shown last season) but now COVID has kicked us in the balls and we have no money
The worse thing is these events will mean we lose Kane and then the club will have to pay out a lot of money to replace his goals. It’s all counter intuitive and actually damaging the clubs position and value but I don’t see what ENIC can do to change things. It’s a fund with no money in it and no other investments, owned by two people, one of whom is loaded but has zero interest in football and both have already made a 1000% or more on their investment.

That's not my point.

It's like someone the other day was saying 'its really good to hear what Jose was saying about Ndombele in his press conference'

None of it's candid. So don't hang any value on it.

Hmm, genrally i agree. But there was something i read somewhere in the Spurs blogo-socialmediasphere some months back that people in the ENIC/Spurs hierarchy were struggling to understand why the ways we operate in terms of transfer dealings were still as though we were where we were in 2004/05 and not at the levels we were now..and that Levy was the reason - and that they were tired of it.

The article/rumour said that a plan was in place in future to move Levy to deal with more 'property porfolio' stuff but do it in a way that would save him some face, e..g "Levy hasn't the time to juggle between the football and this new property (or whatever project) that is the biggest ever seen in London."

I found the post/piece interesting but didn't think much more about it, until we hired Trevor Birch and started to wonder....

My point being that perhaps Levy is not foolproof himself amongst his peers in the club's top hierarchy who might feel similarly to how some fans feel re how he seems to operate..
Harry Hotspur?

That has always been his approach. He coaches on defensive shape but prefers forwards to play on instinct.
Is that correct though?
I’ve never seen any evidence or comments from players confirming that, but I haven’t looked for it either

I don’t agree, I can’t really remember, but that’s not the impression I have of his use of Benzema at Madrid either, he was used to facilitate Ronaldo and Di Maria imo, through guile rather than bombast.

We don’t look like we are trying to play through Kane as a target man to me, long balls are channels or diagonals to runners from deep, and we don’t play that many, our attacking is based on interplay down the right and quick breaks, or balls over the top to Son and Moura should a defence leave space.

If Kane is being instructed to play with his back to goal lay it wide and spin into the box and get to crosses, he’s not making a very good fist of it.

I’m not sure Kane is being asked to do different things, other than defensive set piece plays, I don’t see his movement curtailed by strict instruction.

As I remember it, Mourinho berated Benzema constantly -especially in his first season there- and basically called him a pussy. Mourinho likes his main striker to remain as just that -uptop- and absolutely he wants him to be able to hold it up and play others in/lay it wide, because basically he relies on fast breaks to get goals, a slightly more sophisticated version of Leicester 2016 (though not much more sophisticated). Truth be told (and this is to my eye) Kane isn't making a very good fist of it because Mourinho is not especially fluid on exactly how we are creating as we go forward. The beauty of what was built with Kane/Son/Alli/Eriksen was a quartet who played for each other, played fast fluid football on the floor and played balls inside breaking lines with great passing, movement and switching around. Add to that the option (at least until we left the Lane) of two full-backs who bombed on and could also supply from wide positions, and you had a myriad of options, allowing Kane to always find the extra yard as no-one knew how we'd hurt them.

Now? Put two men on Kane and make sure that forward play is forced into the feet of players like Moura, and it is often easily defended because the likes of Moura simply are not smart enough on the ball.

Look at yesterday's game. In the second-half, the only time we looked like penetrating was when Ndombele played three really good, fast, quick inside channel balls into dangerous areas...I worry about Sonny too, he seems stymied by this.

Back to Kane. If Mourinho is as angry about the lack of pressing by the likes of Kane uptop, then get ready for seeing Kane haring around even more than usual, and then having to feed on scraps.

Again. Blame the recruitment policy, not ENIC.

ENIC are the ones that set the conditions of the recruitment policy. If the recruitment policy is, for example, to buy "proven winners" it is ENIC that will allow that policy or not (given that they will set what can or van't be spent on said players etc)

That has always been his approach. He coaches on defensive shape but prefers forwards to play on instinct.

Absolutely this.

It is why he values speed as he relies on it to do things on the counter. Kane needs intelligence around him not just sprinters and a midfield duo of Holberg and Winks...

Is that correct though?

I'm pretty sure Eden Hazard said something to that effect about how Jose doesn't really train the attackers on attacking moves etc and just leaves it up to them to work out how they should attack, score etc.
There will be limitations to that approach in the end

I still scratch my head as to why they appointed Jose but then didn't change the way they spend in the January transfer window when we had Kane on another long injury and he said he needed a number 9....

Jose is the antithesis to how ENIC/Levy have gone about their business up to now and if in January they showed they were changing it would have made them appointing Jose make sense. The more and more i think about it, the more i think the Amazon documentary was the deciding factor (apparently Pochettino is barely featured in much of it because he didn't agree with the decision to make it and refused to take part...this might be why there were reports of his being in his office constantly instead of our on the training ground?)

Ultimately, i don't blame Jose in the broad scheme of things, he's being himself tbh

If the players are on board with Mourinho, or have been previously, it only further highlights two damning scenarios - Mourinho doesn't know what he's doing any more and/or can't shape a team that doesn't have the odds (money) stacked in it's favour, or the players are past it and we need the painful rebuild highlighted 2+ years ago.

Personally I'd say it's (a bit of) both and we're in a terrible position as a result.
