Really good to have another option in Kulusevski, and hopefully in time also Bergvall.

Time will tell if Maddison can find more consistency. If he doesn't having other options is vital. But perhaps having other options can also help him become more consistent?

In part perhaps because he'll know that he could be benched/subbed. But just as much also that we can manage his minutes and not put so much responsibility on him.
 
no reason for maddison to start games now but he has nothing to complain about.

i think ange had asked maddison to start deeper in previous game but he didn't look comfortable there.

That is a good point, at his previous clubs he was always thought of as their best player [ despite his up and down perormances]. Here he has much more competition for his spot so IF he wants to be the number one here he will have to show more consistency. Lets hope he can do that.

He's a good player, my opinion

- It was always likely that a Maddison & Deki both playing in that 8 role would be limited in the teams/games we could use it
- Deki is probably the form player in the league right now, so he earns the spot (in the games where it's just one)
- Interesting the perspective that we actually adjusted from 4-3-3 to 4-2-3-1 at HT, and it's more the formation that suits the player than output

I think pretty much our full midfield and front line except Son has to expect that they need to fight for their place and there is competition, that's a good thing.

I think that was a side effect possibly of the change but I also think the main purpose of the change and the main impact waw to get us more legs in there. That's what Ange said in his interview and while I don't think Maddison is lazy, it's just that they were coming forward quicker than he and Kulu were coming back and we know Bissouma can let runners go at times so what Sarr gave us was someone coming back quickly to plug gaps and win the ball back as well as bring able to maintain that pressure in attack. That just started turning the ball over regularly in our favour and they started going from looking organised and a threat to ragged and out of the game relatively quickly.
 
Is it perhaps the case that Ange isn't playing to Maddison's strength? When you think back, Madds played his best football with Ndidi and Tielemans. They had very hard working wide players like Barnes and Albrighton. That just meant that Maddison had license to play forward.

Ange has recently changed the 2-1 midfield to a 1-2. The double pivot has gone, and now Madds and Kulu need to support Biss or Bents behind. Madds has no choice but to knuckle down and be one of the adjustable parts that improves the overall team.
 
Don't forget Maddison has been working really hard and got LOTS of interceptions in recent matches.
He's not like a typical show pony #10, he does a lot of the hard yards. Just not as much as Super Sarr Boy
 
he may work hard but he is not smart enough to be in the right places where the team can be effective.

high xg and a lot of chances however not many converted into goals because build up is too slow and there are 6 defenders in the way - xg can't track that !

Darren Anderton was a quality player. Was just his fitness that held him back half the time. I'll never forget him and Ginola in the cup tie against Leeds, think it would have been 1999? Anderton scored a worldy, Ginola scored a worldy and then almost scored one of the best goals of all time, dribbled past a tonne of players then hit both posts with his shot

He was a vey good player for us [ underated by some fans sadly] mostly because of his injury problems. However he played over 350 games for us during his time here. He also turned down a move to Man Utd and enquires from Liverpool as well.

I feel for Anderton as injuries ruined his career. He was a fantastic player, who if he remained fit, could have become one of Englands greats. Maybe not legendary, but certainly great.

Think some fans ire was because he had a habit of turning up to play every game of a major summer tournament for England having missed a tonne of games for Spurs.
 
Anderton played 471 games. He scored 7 goals in 30 England caps.
Beckham played 523 games. He scored 17 goals in 115 England caps.

Clearly Beckham played for much better teams and had a hugely impressive and long career and was a great player, so it is interesting to me that Anderton played almost as many games.

In terms of goals, Anderton's England stats are fantastic.

He was a quality player and averaged a decent amount of games
