James Maddison

When you think about it, every result, good or bad, is because of Angeball. Same as every City result is because of Pepball. I just guess other clubs don't talk about it in the same way.

One thing is clear though. The intensity of Ange's approach to football may take its toll on the players. We might have games (that we can't see coming) where that intensity drops and the highly tuned system breaks a little.

I think that is true - Milo has been saying this for sometime - which makes the whole not-subbing earlier stranger.

Not impressive today.
I was pleased Ange took him off, to shake him up a bit.

It's all too easy to lay it off to Son and Destiny and recycle and do it again and chip one into the box, but you need to do more than that.
You are capable of real excellence, go and do it!
Not got a problem with him being benched, but there's a few others who I'd say have been worse/done less than him this season who could do with the same treatment....

everyone needs to up their game and hopefully in the next few windows, everyone will know that you won't get to play if your levels drop. And people can be rotated

Theres more competition for spaces and roles in the midfield, we have good numbers and a variety of approaches we can take with the profile of the players. Sometimes Maddison will be the choice, other times it might be more appropriate for Sarr, or Bentancur etc.

We don't have that level of competition in the areas you're probably thinking of.

We don’t
Or at least we don’t have players that Ange seems to want to start instead

I would start with Spence for Udogie, Dragusin used more often for Romero and I'm praying that eventually Odobert replaces Son....

Those are just singular swaps and fairly like for like, they don't really alter the shape or the system in the way yesterdays change did. Add that Spence and Odobert are currently injured and unavailable and I think my point still stands.

Cant believe Spence’s luck
Signs a new deal
Tweaks a muscle next day

I don't think the Madders swap was as deep as I have seen made out in various channels and socials, tactical swap identified to account for West Hams presence and one had to go, Deki is in supreme form so wins out, we go on to win the game comfy, Ange vindicated and Madders lives to fight another day

I don't think it's a big deal and so far this season Ange has shown a willingness to start with different options in midfield even if not so much in game. I think the mistake he has made is thinking once he had the Maddison and Kulu partnership working that, that was now going to be his go to and it can be to an extent but variety is the spice of life and sometimes a different option is going to be the better option.

The promising thing at least from my perspective is he made the change when the game was drawn. He could have felt confident that having gotten back into he match the starting 11 would be good enough to seize the points but he didn't take that risk. He was proactive and made the change before any of us really felt it was necessary. That's what I want to see, bold active decision making, anticipating and reacting to what is happening. It was a great move and paid off handsomely, but it doesn't now make me think that Maddison has to be relegated to the bench. Maybe he doesn't start the next match, maybe he does but it gives me more confidence that Ange is going weigh up his expectations better and if it's not going exactly to plan, change it up to give the team a better chance at righting things.

At face value West Ham were the first team we've faced in a while that has banked up with a low block. Ironically the situation where we'd all probably think having a creative double axis of Madders and Deki would be ideal? It didn't (in Anges eyes ) work out like that. Ange stating he thought we needed Paps energy.

Without wanting to bring up the whole Brighton fall out again (but I will)...I always found not turning to Sarr in that game bizarre. Confirmed by Ange himself that our running/sprints stats fell off a cliff at the start of that second half, combined with the energy rise of the Seagulls...it's hard to figure that the perpetual motion running machine of Sarr wasn't of use to combat that??

What we don’t know is the fitness state of the players who in Europe the few days before the Brighton game

The big change yesterday for me was the space that Sarr didn’t occupy. It gave room for others to play their game. No coincidence that the left side looked better second half with Maddison not playing as far forward

We all make mistakes, the important thing is you learn from them.

I don't actually think Maddison was that bad, he was creating plenty of opportunities and getting on the ball quite a but, but West Ham were consistently exploiting gaps in behind Kulu and Madders and if you were going to hook one of them it had to be him. I think that says more about Kulu's form this season in that role rather than Madders. It's healthy to have this kind of squad and the feeling that form is rewarded not reputation. Ange has been criticised for his substitutions and squad management recently so it's only fair to say he got that spot on yesterday.

Perceptive. This guy argues the same with some nice diagrams and images.
Essentially Spam had a back 4 and Rodriguez as DM in front... but then they also dropped Soucek and Paqueta deep alongside Rodriguez, in a 4-3 formation.
Then when Bowen and Kudus tracked our full backs it was a deep 4-5--------1 with Antonio on his own.

By removing Maddison for Sarr, it meant Soucek had no-one to mark so he pushed up higher, leaving space for Udogie to exploit for the second goal.
