James Maddison

He disappeared in the second half. Only seems to play well when we are on top.
I think this is unfair to put on Maddison, we are a system team so if we aren't playing well then the likelihood is most of our players aren't. Put it this way, who plays well when we aren't on top? Maddison gets us ticking which is perhaps why it's magnified with him, but I don't see many/any players stepping up when the chips are down....

I'm not putting the blame in Madders, nobody came out of that second half with any positives. It doesn't change the fact that Madders seems to always disappear when we are under the cosh. He's supposed to be one of the leaders in the team but I don't see any of that from him.

I agree when under the cosh he hasn't really spurred us on, but I'll ask again - who does? On this leadership group, I think Ange got that wrong especially Son as captain when he shouldn't be anywhere near a guaranteed starter and again isn't someone who particularly inspires when the chips are down. Not sure what the solution is there? I guess likely Son won't feature much next season, Romero could be off so there is some opportunity to change leadership....

The solution is a few more players and time
He will see new leaders emerge
But the leadership group thing does have Poch vibes around it

Maddison is a hit and miss player, said it before but you never know what you are going to get from him. On his day he can look great but he goes missing in other games. He has history of doing excately the same at his other clubs as well.

I know some may/will disagree with this but maybe we should look for better and someone who will be more consistant. As i have said he has history at other clubs for doing the same.

I think we need to be seriously looking now. There are aspects of his game that I love, but we can upgrade - ideally while keeping him as part of the squad.

I think he is changing his game currently too which may make another player as an option more viable

Oh how we could’ve done with van der Vaart’s fighting spirit at the weekend…

Van der Vaart told GOAL: "I think it's a difficult one. I think that he has everything, the ability, he’s quick with and without the ball so he can score, can give assists but somehow I have the feeling that the real killer mentality… that he doesn't have that. It looks everything nice and the hair is perfect and everything, but that's what I miss when I see him playing."

Asked if Maddison had that instinct at Leicester, Van der Vaart added: "I think it’s not his character. He's just a player who I will come to the stadium for, because I really like him, but to make an even bigger impact than that, really that passion and that killer mentality that needs to be there (he doesn’t have). Maybe I'm wrong. There are too many games where I’ve thought ‘okay, he can do more’ because he is good, he scores and he has a big impact on the team. That’s my feeling when I see him play."

No reason to disagree with VDVs opinion there.

We are all made different, and with other types in the team that are more aligned with VDVs description, then a Maddison type can work just fine.

Maddison loves football, just like Ange ...that's why Ange loves him. They're football romantics.

I disagree with VDV, I don't think Maddison's hair is perfect at all :D....

A bit like our conversation on Bissouma?

I get your concerns that this won't change, and that's certainly a possibility. But also if he's to take the next step in his career this is probably one of the most important steps he could take.

Players often talk about the difference in attitude and demands when they move to a bigger club. That's imo the mentality we need at our club. Sure, this is the way it's been at Leicester and elsewhere. That's perhaps fine at Leicester, if you're as good as he is. But it's not fine here.

Personally I think that's what Ange is asking for from the players. Up to them to deliver.

Indeed, allthough i do think Maddison is the better player when both are at the top of their game. I do not disagree with what you say about him but what worrys me is that he will soon be 28 [ NOT OLD I AGREE] and been here over a year and there seems to be the same patterns in his play that he has shown elsewhere. Lets hope he gives himself a kick up the arse, stop believing all the hype that surrounds him and starts to show on a consistent basis his top form.

Really could have done with him taking more responsibility on the ball after conceding the first goal I think. Drop a bit deeper, make himself an option. Do something useful, or even just slow things down and make himself available again.

We needed to steady the ship. That doesn't mean abandoning our principles and going full Conte/Mourinho. But within those principles it's certainly possible to slow things down a bit when under pressure in several ways.

In a way I think the opposite of you. Believe all the hype, but know that it's only true if matched by application at all times. We're struggling, he's one of our best players, this is his time to shine. Perhaps not with a goal or an assist, but with his quality on the ball. This is the time to believe in yourself, take responsibility.

Exactly.
I have seen some comment that the result was because of Angeball, which is so lazy. In fact, had we showed upo for the second-half with the same Angeball focus and intent as the first, we'd have cruised that match. Having said that, if you ARE off the pace like we were, you absolutely need your marquee players to take charge and find ways to use their quality and (hopefully broad) shoulders to deal with the situation. He is most certainly a prime member of that group.

Exactly. And really important to have players in midfield doing that. It's in a way where it's most difficult to do that, but also where it's most useful and necessary. Kulusevski and Bentancur are still learning their new roles, this was a chance for Maddison to step up and unfortunately he didn't. That's not to put all of it on him.

When you think about it, every result, good or bad, is because of Angeball. Same as every City result is because of Pepball. I just guess other clubs don't talk about it in the same way.

One thing is clear though. The intensity of Ange's approach to football may take its toll on the players. We might have games (that we can't see coming) where that intensity drops and the highly tuned system breaks a little.

It’s why he needs a squad with more depth
This summer just fine was about adding a lot of that but it was young
We’re still 2/3 more away
That may come in some part with players on loan too like the 2 CBs and Donley
None however address the left back or keeper issue where we have no “real” cover if we’re blunt
And of course you also want upgrades
