James Maddison

Yes. He should absolutely take responsibility and try to draw fouls if nothing else is on. He has not done that with conviction for some time. I am hopeful this performance gives him that sense of conviction. The elite find ways. Grealish looked all across the last third for City today, found his moments and took them. I believe this game will have fortified Maddison. And Ange's style requires quick incisive passing/progression.
Yes, when the quick incisive passing that is actually is progressive is on that's obviously what's required.

When that pass or move isn't on it's a different story.

That is precisely when you have to try and use different areas of your talent. Maddison has such good feet that I would love to see him looking to draw fouls in tight lines and pockets when the pass and move isn't on.

(This next bit is general discussion BTW and not aimed your way)

I want Maddison 10 yards further up the pitch. I understand why he drops back deep in such games to try and 'conduct' from deeper, but that is what our 6 should so. Right now, with Ange going Deki and Bentancur, he is allowing Maddison to do that. Much was said about Maddison being in a 'deeper' area against Brentford when the truth is he (and the whole team) were often playing 10 yards higher and with more aggression in the press and conviction. Bentancur repeatedly moved the ball quickly to him, and he in turn quicky looked for progression.

In games such as Arsenal, I appreciate that is harder to do (as Emirates Marketing Project found out) but I'd still like to see Maddison back his talent more in those circumstances, and if a pass isn't on, try to find gaps if only to draw fouls. I think with Deki now in alongside, plus Solanke and Johnson's movement, he will have those opportunities in those games. I think sometimes when faced with deep 'walls' like that, we could look for Maddison to take up Grealish positions wide-left and get into the box/around the back via byline.

Truth is too that early goals in those circumstances make things much easier, and we have missed some chances!

I am hopeful we will be as aggressive next weekend, where a win is on!

Against bus Parker’s the speed of the pass is so key
Against teams more open, the accuracy makes the difference as seen with romeros ball into son for Maddison’s goal

I thought Grealish yesterday showed how it can be done against sides like that.
Grealish just does what he does
Helped him maybe that it was late
Doku made me laugh…. Could see how limited he is but also how brilliant too
He beat a man and didn’t have the ball in him or then just stopped trying
Grealish thrives off those moments

This season, I tend to agree especially at home. Last season we didn't have a passer like Bentancur in midfield. We had Biss and Sarr, meaning the only time we saw an unlocking mid range pass was from either Madds deep or perhaps Romero / Porro. At times it looked like we were trying to play 5-a-side from our goal to theirs, which made us predictable.

I think the Madds / Kulu combo leaves teams thinking more than what we saw last year.

Deki has been great there. I hope we go to Old Trafford with the same 11 as Ten Haag cannot afford to sit deep and counter at home.

One of the better players of the pre-season and season so far is Deki, his best position is in the center in midfield, hence Maddison will spend more time deep. Maddison mentions it in his last post game, when Deki is central, by nature they would tend to occupy the same space, hence Maddison will drop and be the "pass before the pass"

Maddison would have to up his game and consistency to justify pushing Deki back out on current form.

Personal opinion, Maddison is capable of great things, if the rest of his midfield is working, last season when Biss & Sarr were in brilliant form, gave him the platform, no shock for me with Son, Deki & Solanke pressing in front of him and Bentancur covering behind, he had the space & possession to show off. I don't think he works when the midfield is struggling.

I think it's really important to define 'deep' in this specific context.

Essentially, what I see Deki as doing is allowing Maddison to have a 'free' role to rove wherever he feels he can have positive impact, and sometimes IMO, that is going to bring him left, sometimes the centre- circle. What I have liked the most about Deki and Bentancur with him is that he has actually not been dropping back to pick uip the ball just outside our box; if he does drop, it is 10 yards further forward from where he's been (to my eyes) plus Deki does allow that creative overload upfront and give him that license. I think that trio is allowing us to play higher (and execute a press better especially with Solanke) which in turn (due to extra creative in midfield) is giving us that much more incision on the ball.

I know there is an eternal debate about Bissouma or Bentancur. I think Biss has a high ceiling but is not especially consistent. I think Bentancur has a reliability factor, plus en eye for great weighted passes plus intelligent runs, that in this trio makes him more reliable. He also reads the defensive side of the game very well, his Inspector Gadget legs seeming to nick and steal oppostion passes pretty consistently.

I love Papa, but at this point he is a squad player IMO.
I hope Ange stays with this midfield for the forseeable future, as I think it practically underscores everything his style is about. And I agree, Maddison is capable of great things...as long as he remains on his own bubble-edge. I like him a little spikey and angry, long may it continue.

grealish has more purpose and courage than maddision. goes into tight spaces expecting to get kicked - gets kicked and the foul, no complaints.
maddison looks soft compared to grealish.

It was a great, great mistake when we didn't pull the trigger on Grealish for 10 MILLION!!!!!!!!!

Yes, if the dribble is on in a good area that's obviously also great. Foul or getting past his man. But more difficult when opponents are more passive. But several of our players could perhaps be more willing to test how far opponents will take that. Drive at them, if they back off keep going. Even if it ends with a simple pass backwards or sideways it creates movement in the opposition.

I think Maddison is quite good at getting up into the final third and finding good positions even if he drops deep in earlier phases. Perhaps we're seeing that differently? If he drops deep and stays deep I would agree more with you.

Doesn't deserve one. Needs to perform at the level he did against utd for a few games to start being considered.

Agree, he has talent for sure but he is a hit and miss player and you never know how he will be. He needs to be more consistant over a long period if he can do that then he may be a regular in the England squads.
