Southgate must get a go - he's done well with U21s

We must stop building up and over hyping our team they cannot cope with any expectation.

You win you lose - we lost to a well organised and correctly motivated side.

Well done to the winners Iceland .

pressure is certainly an issue

in hindsight Bobby Robson and Terry Venables haven't really done us any favours, we have an entire generation who think par for England is the semi finals at least

the press this morning is absolutely ridiculous, it's just a bloody football match

the entire football machine in England needs a attitude adjustment

Don't know what all the fuss is about, surely people who watch football ever week must have noticed that most of the successful clubs in our league have foreign players filling the key roles in their teams and when it comes to international selection the England manager will be picking from a small pool of players who might be able to perform at this level to the same standard as other international teams.

The Fa seem happy to qualify each couple of years as it keeps the money rolling in with TV deals, sponsorship and shirt sales and as long as the team do that it's fine.

We need to realise we don't have any world class players at the moment and if we want to avoid embarrassment at these tournaments we need a manager who has a plan to make us difficult to beat and try to beat teams playing a counter attacking game. Unfortunately this will not happen as we are England and have great players and we should beat anyone in the world, and that attitude will always hold us back.

I agree with most of that

going out to Iceland isn't embarrassing though, they got out of a group containing Portugal and Austria and qualified out of a group with the Czech Republic, Turkey and Holland

I think that argument is the wrong way around, England are not crap because the players haven't experienced football in another country, England are crap because we have crap players that are not good enough to play football in another country.

Bingo and i said the same thing last night, the England players are all overhyped and if they were as good as they make out why are the big clubs abroad ( Barca, Madrid, Munich etc) not trying to buy them. Overhyped players playing in a vastly overhyped league.

Spot on.

They might not be top class, but you can't tell me they aren't better than the Russian, Slovakian and Icelandic players?

And I don't think many people have been trying to argue that we're on par with the likes of France, Germany, Spain etc.

The fact is that on paper we should be beating those teams, and the fact that we haven't (and have had similarly poor results for years) can only be for physical, psychological or tactical reasons. For me last night's performance was a mixture of all three, but particularly tactical (no system) and psychological (seems even the new crop of players can't overcome the albatross of decades of these kinds of disappointments).

I thought the first touch of a lot of our players was poor last night, the ball always seemed to go a couple of feet away from them or up around their knees, it may have been that they were too tense and I suppose that might explain the performance as angles and space change so much in that vital split seconds. I find it strange in some players particularly Sturridge as I see him as an arrogant person with little self doubt.

in the true test situation of tournament football they certainly don't appear to be

we continually applaud these seemingly inferior countries for getting their tactics right and doing the basics whilst lauding our own for the things they have done in the PL, ignoring the fact that getting the basics right is 90% of it and we are consistently incapable of doing so

nothing ever changes but the shoes, I expect I blathered on in the same way 2 years ago, and 2 years before that, and on and on and on

Reguardless of if they are better then other counties players is not the point i was making. They are over rated and part of that reason is they play in a overhyped Lge ( thanks to Sky) and there is no fact to suggest that we should beat these teams apart from that hype.

How many of are top players play in other leagues at the really big clubs ( Barca, Madrid etc) the truth is England have not won a knock out game in tournament football for 10 years ( that is over 6 tournaments).

You are not wrong we all have, England have not won a knock out game in 10 years ( over 6 tournaments) and yet many still believe we are a strong football nation at International level, we are not and the hype the team and players get here is embarrassing at times.

What? 'There is no fact to suggest we should beat these teams' - suggests you are making a point about whether our players are better than other countries' or not.

Iceland's best player playing in English football is Siggy - a good player. The other two play for Cardiff and Charlon - a team that got relegated from the Championship. That direct comparison suggests that our players are better, and that our problem is that they underperform at tournaments.

Look guys........if they're are overhyped and overatted then that is half the Tottenham team you are talking about. They're not overhyping and overatting themselves....the media do and the respective fans might.

I mean our 5 guys only add up to £13M of talent. (=Sterlings right leg). We should beat Iceland, Russia, Slovakia but as we have seen if you dont have courage, belief, togetherness, and solid tactics those teams have a chance.

It nice to see football is more about these things these days....the system is everything. Italy have got no real stars BUT they have all those things i mentioned.(blew Barca/Real Spain away) Spurs have it and that's why our'cheap' boys made the England squad. (boy i hope they're not scarred). Leicester have it. A.Madrid have it. Chile have it.

They day of the the £30M footballer guaranteeing to make a difference is over (Saido Mane..exhibit no.1).

I checked out the day England appointed Steve McClaren, i'd done my tours of duty. So no pain tis morning. Spurs boys head to that beach. COYS

Actually, Russia should walk the Euros as they're by far the largest nation. ;)

People need to stop paying attention to the media. Hyping players one day in order to tear them down the next.
