We should beat Iceland, Russia, Slovakia but as we have seen if you don't have courage, belief, togetherness, and solid tactics those teams have a chance.

100% this. We had close to zero tactics, weren't really even sure of our formation and had players out of position (or in roles they are not suited to).
I even felt sorry for Wheelchair (I know, feel dirty) being asked to come on and run the game when it was obviously not going to happen.

A random thought: Does this highlight a deeper problem in English football, that as a whole we love the game, but don't really understand it?

As an aside, I played 5-a-side (low quality) while living in Spain and found even that was way more tactical that in England. Everyone (of different nationalities) would constantly be adjusting tactics as the game went on + talking to each other in a helpful way.

(Though this is a moot point, as the England team seemed to need teacher Roys permission to do anything)

I know i may get pilloried for this, but I think a qualifying stage and possible tournament led by one Harold Redknapp might actually be a positive. Get the players motivated and running around a fackin' bit.

A Harry team would get ripped apart. It's not about running about and leaving spaces everywhere. It's about having a system, drilling it and sticking to it.
England seem to think that their greater individuals will over come the team, it won't.

A agree to a degree, a team must have a system to defend and manage a game, too many players have been coached to a point where they can't adapt to different situations and lack the skill or technique to overcome other well drilled teams.

Talksport ready as ever to plant the knife into the back of the players they were over-hyping a couple of weeks ago, have published the wages they think the players are on. Our lads look like the poor relatives: £80k a week for Smalling, £120k for Sturridge and Rooney £250k, put those ticket prices up, the clubs are having a tough time.

Nope, mentioned it before, mentioned it when Hodgson was appointed, you could see this result coming from a mile off (uninspired, slow football resulting a 1 goal loss, going out with a wimper). Still laughing that some people actually thought Hodgson was a decent coach after watching the years of brick he has delivered between England and Pool.

England has two main issues in tournaments

selection - best players instead of best team (Lampard/Gerrard both in team for a decade), players based on name/club instead of form, always taking recently injured/off form players (Beckham/Rooney/Wheelchair)
uninspired coaches - Hodgson, Sven, McClaren are all about as interesting as watching paint dry.

To me, the main issue is pace, EPL is all about pace and athleticism, yet at every tournament England teams play slow and methodical (which they suck at). England needs to stop trying to beat teams by being better organized or better technically, but by speed and power. Iceland took every opportunity to slow down the game yesterday, because it suited them.

I think a lot of England's issues are a lack of togetherness. The domestic season causes rivalry even hatred. Putting Wheelchair into the middle of half the spurs team just about sums it up.
We hate each other.
Just waiting for the queen to snuff it now.
There's a lot of politics now playing for Egland[if you could call it that] It goes back to 1966 when we won the world cup and football in the country started to be a major topic.
It was all about prestige, who played for what club, and jealously between the players. Greaves who was Englands best ever goal scorer by a country mile could not even be picked for England.
Also, I think the style we played may have changed. I remember someone writing a book about how we were the World cup winners at winning the ball but not knowing what to do with it when we had it.:)

So you see not much has really changed after all these years.

What? 'There is no fact to suggest we should beat these teams' - suggests you are making a point about whether our players are better than other countries' or not.

Iceland's best player playing in English football is Siggy - a good player. The other two play for Cardiff and Charlon - a team that got relegated from the Championship. That direct comparison suggests that our players are better, and that our problem is that they underperform at tournaments.

Well if our players have the same attitude as that its no wonder they never do it.

Get rid of that fudgeing England band for starters! Bloody annoying racket. Ever since they appeared we've been bricke.

I no longer go to watch the England games anymore ( been there, got the tee-shirt) but i would love to stick their instruments somewhere the sun does not shine. Felt the same way about that prick who had the drum at the lane.

Good manager and he certainely talks a lot of sense about what in all honesty is a simple game.

Parklane you've said that you have worked with young players at a high level, do you feel that enough was done to improve their basic skills? I know it's difficult to simulate match play with training but so many british players still seem to have little confidence on the ball and spend vital time controlling it in matches. At times it's like the bad old days when the biggest and strongest who grafted got the nod. I'm not putting down that type of player as they are essential in any team but the first criteria must be to have a "love" of the ball and treat it with care. work-rate, strength and organisation can be picked up at anytime. I look at players like Modric and Iniesta and think we'll never produce a player like that
