Well if our players have the same attitude as that its no wonder they never do it.

Indeed, though I doubt that is their attitude.

All I'm saying is that I don't think the primary reason we haven't beaten Russia, Slovakia and Iceland is because we overrate our own players - even if we do (and I agree some people do), overall they are still clearly better than those teams' players if they play to their potential.

The problem is the England players are not playing to their potential (which I agree in any case still wouldn't be as good as Spain, Germany, France, Belgium and maybe Italy).

Parklane you've said that you have worked with young players at a high level, do you feel that enough was done to improve their basic skills? I know it's difficult to simulate match play with training but so many british players still seem to have little confidence on the ball and spend vital time controlling it in matches. At times it's like the bad old days when the biggest and strongest who grafted got the nod. I'm not putting down that type of player as they are essential in any team but the first criteria must be to have a "love" of the ball and treat it with care. work-rate, strength and organisation can be picked up at anytime. I look at players like Modric and Iniesta and think we'll never produce a player like that

It is better then it was for sure but it still is not as good as some other countries but there has been a improvement over the last years. I was lucky enough to spend time at a lot of the Dutch clubs during the 2000 years and they were streets ahead of what we were doing.

Thankfully the FA decided that we should look at how other countries handle the progress/ development of their younger players and sent a few of us to have a look. The biggest problem we had for years was a certain Charles Hughes who was the guy who was head of coaching and wrote the coaching manuel for coaches and you had to adhere to it to pass the badges.

His way of teaching was simple, fewer passes as possible and get the ball forward as quick as you can, thankfully his way of coaching as been dropped ( and in all fairness has been for years). I always tried to convince the young players to play with two feet and again it was years before that type of coaching was brought into the picture.

I have retired now but still keep my badges up by going on the refresher courses and i still keep in touch with what's going on. Its a lot better then it was for sure.

Genuinely tinkled that people are saying that Kane lost his finishing boots. He hardly had a chance inside the 18 yrd box over the 3.5 games he had. I get angrier when I hear how Sturridge had a good game vs Iceland.

FA saying that they won't rule out a foreign appointment. Rafa Benitez?

If it's to be an English guy then why not Sam Allardyce. The football may not be sophisticated but I've never seen England play fancy football and tbh I don't think its in their DNA. Allardyce knows how to put a team together and motivate them to go out and compete.

:) it is funny though

That's the problem with all these young players being on social media now. I'm sure they come across stuff like this and subconciously it has to have an effect.

Not just this Mickey taking but the nasty abuse as well. In the olden days players just had to put up with criticism from journalists but now its a whole new ball game

Social media has made the world 10 times worse.

The longer the English players spent away from the influence of their club coaches and more time they spend with Hodgson the worst they got. Of course they did well in qualifying.

The last 5 managers Keegan, Sven, McLaren, Capello and Hodgson have all been ridiculous appointments. One day England wont appoint someone out of their depth or semi retired and out of date.

Interesting press conference yesterday considering the current FA Chief Exec is a marketing specialist.

Glenn actually said he wasn’t a football expert twice in Hodgson’s farewell press conference. When pressed why he said: “Well, I’ll be the counterbalance. We’ve got two experts around me...”

When it was pointed out Gill, an accountant, and Ashworth, had never picked a manager, he added: “David’s has got a great track record in running a football club, I think you might find.”

That’s David Gill the former Finance Director of Manchester United who later became CEO.

From an event last year:

Glenn also took a swipe at the number of accountants who go on to become CEOs, saying they were "less able to take risks" that are necessary to grow companies in a globalised world.

"Too many accountants running companies is not a healthy thing," he said. "They keep the score, they don’t score the goals."
