Harry Winks

If we assume that Bentacur is good enough to be a first choice midfield player for us then we're looking for one more addition in the summer to find his partner. I think Skipp and Hojbjerg are both good enough to be back up players (and Skipp could develop further from there) that leaves Winks as clearly 5th choice and that's before considering Sarr (who I think we might let out on loan again). Personally I'd like us to sign two central midfield players this summer, one being a deeper player able to play in a pivot (Brozovic would be perfect, or alternatively perhaps Kamara) and one being a creative player that would probably be more useful in a midfield 3 (a player like Soler or Isco). Winks I think should be moved on for the sake of both the club and the player.
I agree with that outlook BUT it doesn't take account of the other signings we are going to have to make and the order of importance. The other thing to remember is Ndombele and Lo Celso will have to be dealt with again in the summer. Both midfielders, so in theory will have to go (again) to free up wages and hopefully secure some incoming funds.

If we can get 1 CM in that upgrades Winks, he can then be sold as well.

IMO the order of importance for our team/squad....

1. RWB. He needs to have pace, be good one on one (in both directions) and have quality delivery. It might make sense to purchase a right midfield player from a team that plays a 4-4-2 system (previously I advocated us bringing in Nahitan Nandez) instead of bringing in a full back.
2. CM. Need a player who can play properly in a double pivot, can break up play but also receive the ball when closely marked and play progressive passes. I was thinking the other night that getting Modric back for a year or two might do us a World of good if we can't get a longer term option like Brozovic.
3. CB. Needs to be physical enough to improve our defending of set pieces but also have good ability on the ball and be able to step up into the midfield to make up for the fact that we often get outnumbered there due to our 3-4-3 formation. Robin K0ch at Leeds would be a leftfield option here as he has these attributes and is already adapted to the PL.
4, Centre forward. We need to be able to keep Kane fresher. Also be good to have the option of dropping Kane into a number 10 role and still have a 9 up front. I have put this as priority 4 as this player wouldn't be 'first choice' but if we want to be able to compete across more than 1 competition then this player is perhaps the most important of all seeing as at present we have no backup at all for our number 9.
5. A creative midfield player who can unlock defences. They would be unlikely to be a first choice starter due to Conte's preferred system but we have nobody of this ilk in the squad and I think we then miss out on coming back to win points in games where the opposition go ahead of us as we are then easy to defend against if we're not able to counter attack.
6. A bona-fide alternative goalkeeping option to Lloris.
7. Another CB option suited to Conte's system.
8. A back-up option at RWB (might make sense for this to be a Djed Spece/Isiah Jones type option).

Not saying that we can/will get all of those but I think we need to work down that list and make sure we get the first 5 or even 6 of them this summer if we want to do anything next season.

Im not one for bringing back ex players, but Modric is the exception.
A winner who will not put up with any of the chicken badge guff from this lot.
Rwb is also a must for next season.

On the creative midfielder front I believe we will go for Eriksen this summer
I’ve heard it from two different random sources now (one is Brentford related)

Please no, no harm to Eriksen, but this seldom works.
Its a backwards step, and not even one that will recreate anything positive.

Agree with this. Top post mate.

Depends a bit on who Conte ends up thinking he can trust come the summer of course, some of those may move up or down the list of priorities.

For me at least 2-3 players that can be expected to improve the starting 11. Rest can be more options at first set least.

It’s just an all round unfortunate situation imo. Can’t imagine the amount of abuse Winks probably gets online from toxic macarons with nothing better to do, it must be tough not to respond / get in to stupid arguments but liking a post like that is probably going to encourage more of it.

No he didn’t single handedly lose of the game but having a better player on the bench to turn to could’ve changed things. There’s a small chance in the remaining games he’ll be needed and may do okay.. But for his career and self worth Winks has got to realise it is time to move on in the summer, if Conte sticks to a midfield two then having someone as passive as him doesn’t do anyone any favours.

Yeah you're right.
I expect we'll sign another midfielder in the summer and that will make it crystal clear to Winks that moving on is an option to be seized.

The fact that this is the first post about him since Mar 3rd shows nobody is blaming him on here at least.
Unfortunately there is a massive difference between the mainly rational people posting on here and the large volume of idiots spouting off nonsense on Twitter who instantly have access to abusing players such as Winks….

That should add some much needed steel to their team.
Sarcasm, much?

While he's not quite up to the level that we need, especially when we're only playing two CMs, he's a Spurs lad through and through.

While I reckon Winks would fare much better in La Liga, Everton would be a pretty good move for him. If it goes through, I hope he and Dele get plenty of game time next season.

You need to be a good passer and decisive to suit CM in Spain. Winks is neither, he'd be a bottom half player in La Liga as well.

If only he cracked on from that performance against Madrid.

classic "home grown but not really good enough despite the hype" situation really. For every Ledley King there's an Alton Thelwell, Antony Gardner, Cameron Carter Vickers, etc. Winks has done well to get to where he is, but like Mason and Bentaleb before him, his limits have been hit as we've demanded more of him.

I think the biggest problem with Winks is that we are asking him to be something he's not. He is not a creator. He is not a breakup player. He recycles well and keeps the ball within the team, but he isn't a player that makes things happen and is too often the equivalent of sitting on the ball. Still this isn't Winks' fault in any way, he's a good allround player at a level where there's little need for good allround players anymore.
