Cristian Romero

It’s also an indication on what is the alternative and what Ange is prioritising
Or he doesn't rate the alternative as highly. It's possible that's he's wrong (although Dragusin hasn't shown that as yet in his appearances) but seemingly he things Romero is the best option as it stands and he supports the proactive way he plays.

Ligament damage that would cause him to feel pain whenever he struck the ball? You find that surprising? Huh.

Nah, I get that but is it pain that the player can play with? If it was say ankle ligaments, you'd be worried about turning that ankle again. If it was knee ligaments, you'd be worried about the twisting movements or pressure through the joint. I'm not sure how it manifests itself with that specific ligament, that's all.

All I'm saying is that players play with a little pain through these injuries all the time. We also know that, rightly or wrongly, they have injections as well to allow them to play. I'm not in the camp where I'm going to berate the player or club/international medics for making this call. It's just one of those things that happens in football.

That’s exactly what I meant

I know what you mean, but Lineker's career fizzled out due to his toe injury

So do I
But if not, I don’t think we will suffer defensively. We will suffer creatively possibly
All depends on Micky to give that balance
When we suffer creatively we suffer defensively through losing the ball, getting pressed out of our style and through not offering enough of a threat for opponents to worry about.

I was assuming VdV would miss out on another game or two, but perhaps not? If he's available it's definitely less of an issue in terms of balance both defensively and on the ball.

I guess the Dragusin VdV combo is still relatively untested, but I have my doubts.

City can cross a ball… that kills Romeros game
So as a good as he is with the ball (elite) his lack of awareness/form/whatever when defending is likely to cost us more than the ball retention which we struggle with against city anyway

Ball retention is less important in games like this, though of course has some value. Being able to play through their press to get into dangerous areas ourselves is really important. Romero is really important to that part of our game. When struggling for ball retention the difference between sometimes playing through that press and very rarely playing through the press is massive.

I also think Romero's struggles when defending against crosses is somewhat overstated.

It’s factually correct though
He doesn’t win battles with crosses
I’ve posted the video before to show it
I have sometime later and I’ll see if I can get some stats on it

If it was the video with all the goals we've conceded this season I don't think that's enough to call something like this a fact. You'd have to at least look at all crosses that have come in against us to get a bigger data set.

Even then is this a problem now or a constant in his game? Last season it was set pieces and Romero was brought up as part of the issue. Now we're seemingly defending corners better, with Romero one of those a part of that.

I don't think stats are particularly useful on this either.

I agree it's a weakness in his game, certainly not a strength. But I also think it's partly down to other defensive struggles and defending when not organised meaning that we're scrambling before the cross comes in. Situations where almost all centre backs struggle.

The issue is he doesn’t mark a man, and he goes front post
So it’s double bubble. He doesnt do anything helpful when we’re having crosses against us
Add in the VDV is woeful in the air and the theme recurs
It’s easy for any well organised teams to hit crosses in knowing that we will fumble at them

Ah. So this is why he left international duty early

Cristian Romero was unavailable for Argentina's clash with Peru this morning, but for good reason as he welcomed his newborn daughter into the world.

Having been with the Argentina squad for Friday's defeat to Paraguay, playing the first 45 minutes before being substituted, Cuti was given leave for the World Cup qualifier with Peru to be with his wife for the birth of their daughter Lucy.

Announced via his instagram in the early hours of Wednesday morning, the defender said, "Welcome love of our lives ❤️ LUCY♥️"

"We were waiting for you my heart, DAD VALEN and MOM"

Congratulations, Cuti and family 🤍

Yep
May still be injured though
But time with his family is key

I agree.

I thought I’d check to see if my thoughts that Romero and out CBS generally are awful at dealing with crosses but it’s hard to see without looking at things such as aerial duels.
The data above shows that at best they are a

You've hand picked the best, and our boys stack up pretty nicely.
Milenkovic was known as the king of aerial duels in Italy. Van Dijk is king of this in the Prem.

Yeah
It’s not really worth picking the worst is it?
He is a £50m CB
So is VDV
Milenkovic has been better on the deck than anyone else too
