Cristian Romero

Yep, it's actually why I had no issue with the first yellow.

Haaland's a fudging unit, in two games with us, he know he isn't bullying anyone, and he didn't enjoy today.

Btw. did anyone else notice we went man marking today instead of zonal?
I wasn't impressed with the first yellow -- or the second! But in hindsight, and having watched the highlights, it was a classic reducer. Haaland seemed to play the rest of the game without his usual intensity. I mean, it might come from previous matches where he knows he's not going to get one over on Romero. Or a lack of confidence. Either way, job done.

EDIT: Also Dier, who did a great job on Haaland as well.

Dier did a great job because he didn’t make haaland
He left him and told players what to do… the pointy shouty role
And his passing was very good too

Think he was a bit unlucky with the 2nd yellow, I mean it was a card and he deserved to be sent off, but Hojberg (who was excellent) missed the 1st foul meaning it was left to Romero to stop the attack.

Thought City players got away with fouls that equally stopped a promising move to the one Romero got sent off for. It's a yellow, but seems unfair when it's not consistent.

Romero has to try to make that tackle. If he's supposed to just shirk away and let Grealish past him because he's on a yellow he must be taken off imo.

Thought he did really well playing on a yellow, he's quite good at that. But I miss his aggression a bit when he's on a yellow.

I disagree. IIRC, the tackle wasn't far over the halfway line and there were plenty of players between Grealish and goal. It was a fair shout for Romero to pull out, knowing that (1) he was probably on a yellow and a half, (2) Grealish is a massive diver, and (3) the ref was eating up whatever Grealish had been giving him all game. But equally, it was a quick decision, late in the game.

Either way, the tackle was made, the card was given, off he went. I was absolutely terrified that Sanchez would concede a penalty in the last few minutes, but we held out.

As I think someone said earlier, it'd be a fair shout to give Romero MotM even with the sending off.

Haven't watched it back, but think we were in trouble if Grealish gets past him there. Just lost the ball in central midfield, no midfielders back, Romero "out of position", Grealish running at our remaining back line. That's the kind of situation we managed to avoid for the majority of the game.

Many of have been saying that Romero hasn't been the same this season. Had a good World Cup, but that hasn't been indicative of this season. Still, he had a "great" game yesterday despite getting sent off, but doing so with 10 minutes left isn't such a huge crime.
I feel like he was way better at winning the ball last season, but it was great to see us play physically in general. Bentancur is always up for a tackle, and even Royal played really well and went to ground way more than I recall him doing so on average. Personally, I think Romero is guilty of playing the man and not the ball, but that does tend to put some attackers off knowing Romero could be waiting to lunge at their ankles for no reason at all.

I always believed as a defender you should get into a player head either by physical intimidation or verbals.

Right, reminds me of Romero screaming in a player's face for diving or something like that... but this a fine line where karma can easily come back at you. As long as he can maintain professionalism while toeing the line, that's what can set him apart from other players.
