Circus ManUnitus - Nobody's At The Wheel

Last weekend: "Top 4 is a certainty. Outside chance of the title."

Now: "brick on a stick. LVG out!"

I was forced to watch last nights game vs CSKA, and I have to say it's one of the must turgid games I have ever seen! That CSKA team was terrible, and Uniteds play is just so slow and boring, it's more fun watching paint dry! They are unbelievable bad, and I cannot fathom how they are above us in the league! Yesterday they had one player that actually looked decent, and went forward instead of sideways and backwards, and that was Jesse Lindgard. The rest were utter brick!

Interesting. Only saw the highlights, but thought United created quite a few chances based on that and the (Norwegian) pundits were falling over themselves praising LvG for keeping Rooney on the pitch when he ended up scoring...

Good to hear that they're still struggling. Hopefully Rooney getting a goal is just one of those things that happens and he will continue to get plenty of game time and struggle... :)

Well, my United-fan friends were pulling out their hair in despair, but as they said "at lest we scored a goal and actually created a couple of chances. Improvement, albeit a very tiny one."

Just read an article from a Norwegian journalist that was at OT yesterday. He talks about the circus after the game. The journalists are waiting in the tunnel and LVG comes out to talk with them. He does two very brief interviews, then it's FOX's turn. LVG responds: "Why should I talk to FOX? We were in the US in the summer, that ought to be enough."

After the post match presser he walks past LVG giving his press guy an earful because he had to answer questions about United being boring.

you can play pretty football, you can play boring football, you can hoof it long, or you can pass pass pass, no philosophy is any more valid than any other, yes it's entertainment to the paying customers in the stand, but it's business to everybody else and results are ultimately all that matter

there is nothing stopping those united fans going to watch city instead if all they are worried about is aesthetics

this pervasive attitude in football fandom that we are entitled to a certain product tinkles me right off, I have a friend who is a charlton fan (a small club in south London) who is attending a protest today against a chairman who invested 22m to keep the club going and kept them in the championship (a lower league in England) last season, a quick glance at the all time league table shows charlton are historically the 67th placed club in the English league, yet the current fan base is complaining because they are "only" 30 places higher than they should be, and, that they are worried at the long term ambitions of the club, which to my mind shouldn't be any a longer list than, stay solvent

the game got greedy with its 3 wishes, the genie isn't going back into the bottle

I remember when finishing comfortably in mid table in the PL wasn't good enough for the Charlton fans.

On pretty much every fan forum out there they want new owners with ambition (ie. someone who is willing to waste his personal fortune on overpaid mercenary clams).

yep

I think people only moan about what's happened to football when it's not actively happening to them, this new order has been inevitable for a long time, fans can't start complaining now, they may not want football to have changed, but it has, on their watch

don't protest the price of tickets now if you didn't protest the signing of Carlos kickaball 25 years ago

Not sure what money in the game has to do with attractive football? yes, everyone has asshole fans ... no surprise there.

However, if Manure, City & Cheat$ki, i.e. the sides that have spent over a BILLION+ pounds in the last 5-6 years can't play attractive football, who can? when do you?

I still say we dodged a massive bullet with Van Hippo Head ... spent money like a lotto winner in a brothel and has creative a slow, unimaginative, possession based team ...

my point is, you don't have to, you hire a manager based on his ability to get results, how you get those results is irrelevant to the ownership, it's only an issue to the fans, as long as it's a minority's of fans it doesn't matter

I don't believe that in a fan base the number of people who care about method will outnumber those who care about results

Agree. Never wanted him, never liked him.

In an era of depression re the state of the game, that is one of the most depressing statements I have ever heard ...

I cannot decide whether Manchester United will finish top 4, or not. At the moment, the team are playing turgid football, not exciting anyone and with very little creativity or goals. And yet, Manchester United sit in the top 4 of the Premier League table. Irrespective of the entertainment of their performances, they are grinding out results on the back of a solid defensive backbone. The big question is whether this is something that can continue throughout the duration of the season.

I think that it is possible, they certainly wouldn't be the first team to base success upon defensive success, rather than attacking flair, and I believe that they have the players to lift them out of poor spells. In the likes of Mata, Martial and yes, Rooney, they have players who can produce a special moment of ability that will get them the goal that they need. Through keeping the game tight defensively, they limit the number of chances the opposition need and then will only require the one goal themselves and so, they can play turgid football, grab one goal and continue to win games. I do question though whether this tactic ought to continue to succeed for them. I think that there are better footballing teams in the league and could see ourselves and Liverpool leapfrogging Manchester United to claim the last 2 CL spots; I am assuming that Emirates Marketing Project, and Arsenal, have the virtually guaranteed CL spots already.

Will be an interesting season, and has been said elsewhere, we have an excellent chance for top 4. As a consequence of Chelsea's woeful ways, Liverpool in transition and a turgid Manchester United, our bright young team has all the chance to get top 4, and maybe even a place higher!

Watford (A)
Leicester (A)
West Ham (H)
Bournemouth (A)
Norwich (H)
Stoke (A)
Chelsea (H)
Swansea (H)
Saudi Sportswashing Machine (A)

There's easily 7 or 8 wins in their next games. Unless West Ham pull off another shock.
