Cann we make the top 4 or 5?

No, I wouldn't have. We had to select two british goalkeepers. So if the choice was Forster or Spence, i would have said Spence. The numbers dont work at all. How can we have 4 players in a squad for one position, but 7 players for 4 positions. We have zero cover for full backs, you're practically relying on playing VdV or Romero in most Uefa Cup games. Given the importance of VDV to our style of play, we effectively need to rest him in Uefa Cup, at least in the early stages.

Thursday no Dragusin, so either Ben Davies left back to rest Destiny, with Romero and VdV in the middle, or Destiny starts and we play Davies CB with one of Romero or VDV. neither are ideal because we left ourselves insanely short on full back cover.
Granted maybe the club didn't realise Spence would be so integral off the bench this early on, and other teams have 4 GKs, but we've left ourselves incredibly short in one area.

4 for 1 Position
Vicario
Forster
Austin
Whiteman

7 for 4 positions
Porro
Gray (should be in Midfield really)
VdV
Romero
Dragusin
Davies
Destiny
For me depends on the actual difference in quality between Forster and Whiteman/Austin.

If there's a significant difference between them leaving Forster out could also have been bad had Vicario gotten injured. I don't know how big that difference is so difficult to have strong opinions on the decision.

7 players for 4 positions is thin, but it's not that thin.

Not sure if you notice but the Europa League winner is awarded the UEFA Cup. And a damned handsome trophy it is, too.

In many respects, this is an easier trophy for us to win than, say, the less-photogenic FA Cup, where we'd likely be facing the best competition from the Premier League in the closing stages. Here, we just get the scruffy, unfashionable strivers of Europe, overall a cut below the PL.
Another reason, is that European teams wont have figured us out as we are not playing week in, week out in the those leagues, so catching them by surprise a lot.

But we need to step up against every team though, even Coventry nearly knocked us out the league a few weeks ago. Won;t win anything playing like that.

I don't think Whiteman/Austin did anything wrong pre-season, would rather give these a go that Forster, whom I think is too old now. Forster had an awful game with some serious errors for his age and experience, shouldn't be happening.

That's all fair enough. My point in that Ange and the coaches see these players in training every day and probably have a better ability and more information than us to judge how good these players are. And that is surely the basis for this decision on Forster and Spence.

I had the impression that he was a bit like Ferguson, that he was hands off on the training and allowing the coaches to do it.

People said it forgetting how crap some teams really were
More games foo for English sides this year to build up the coeficient
The coefficient is based on the average of the teams' points haul. More games if there are more teams participating nets out the same.

I know
But I fully expect all the English sides to walk through the league table side of the comps although United are a worry

Game week 7, done

The BIG THREE all got their customary wins and pull clear.

Thank Ghod CHE, AST and NEW only got a point.

Brighton leap up into the top 6 due to playing a naive bunch of wimps. Huge loss for Spurs. Damning.

Just look at the state of this.

When we were 2-0 up this would have looked like fantastic news.

after the last game i think its easier to win the Europa League than 5th in the EPL
ange better achieve one or the other as I don't think levy will be too happy if the financials show a Europe-shaped hole

We need to go on a significant run of consistency and the earlier the better if we want to get Top 4. The thing with finishing 4th is as we've seen you don't have to be perfect but you do need to be on a kind 2 wins and a draw in 4 plus a win or two to finish there. We are not on that kind of run and it would need a significant run of results to get back on that track.

In essence the EL is probably a more reliable approach unless we can really lock into a series of wins. We are talking probably 6 wins in our next 10.

No doubt to finish 4th we need a more consistent run of results sooner or later, preferably sooner.

Still think that's very much possible.

Knockout cup competitions will never be reliable. Still not at the point where that is even more reliable imo. As we have we need to balance a bit and focus on both. Think we've struck that balance quite well so far.

Knockout football is always a dodgy thing to hang your hopes on.

You can boil the league down to averaging very close to 2pts a game will get you top 5 (and hopefully that 5th place will be CL this season)
