AVB & Spurs Tactics and Formations discussion thread

this pressing brick is always going to tire the players out because when we win the ball we dont keep it and in effect take a rest. It will be a common theme under AVB, dont expect any different

It should change htough when we have a CM who retains the ball along the lines of hte job which MOdric used to do. WE didnt keep the ball well yesterday which meant that we were chasing them for too much of the game. In games like this last year with Modric in the side, we retained possession a lot better and I would we do so again when we get a new creative CM in

Unfortunately it doesn't. It started today against an average Saudi Sportswashing Machine team who were there for the taking. Last season we lost the first 2, against the top 2 who we were always going to lose to. Despite the loss of Modric and Ade, its not like we have a bad squad with no creativity. If AVB is a decent manager, with the midfield we have he should easily be able to get goals and control games. Harry got 4th with Crouch up front, so its not like we have had to rely on superstar players in the past.

First impressions of AVB, well not good unfortunately. Obviously it is only first impression and that can change, but I dont think we have a tactical Jose Mourinho genius in charge of our club. The players werent motivated and the system and play was predictable. All it took was a half time talk from Pardew to tell them this, and they were easily able to put a plan in place for the second half to get the better of us.

I have that Ramos feeling. I hope Im wrong, I hope Harry doesnt have a job before Xmas as I think we may need him...

(but unlike the Harry hating macarons, I'm more than happy to forget this week and change my opinion over the next few weeks if things pick up).

Your last two lines explain your first two paragraphs

Last season we had the 4th most possession in the league, just behind United, City and Arsenal. That was without always attempting to win the ball back quickly, which I thought we did very well at the beginning of yesterday's match. And bear in mind that we were playing away to the 5th best team in the league last season.

If we get a decent replacement for Modric in and a striker who shows for the ball more, I'm sure we will get better at keeping possession again, and thus be able to maintain our pressing game effectively for longer.

Tire the players out?

The players who were still pressing at 90 minutes?

Righto.

Our players have been doing 2 and 3 sessions a day in pre-season, our players are definately fitter than they were under one session, run around a bit dont practise set pieces Harry

They can defo do the pressing game, end of

Why would you be worried with AVB? What exactly did he do wrong yesterday? They were the 5th best side in the league last season, and yesterday were only there for the taking because we made them look so poor. If we play like that over the season, we will be absolutely fine and well up where we should be. And this was without a key striker, a key Modric replacement and a goalkeeper we will probably bring in.

Just read the 'If AVB is a decent manager...' line again though, and I have to say that's pretty ridiculous. If he's a decent manager, he should easily be able to get goals and control games at the team that finished 5th last season? WTF? Well, we did actually play really well and restricted them to pretty much their only chances of the game which they scored from. But it's just such a ridiculous way to judge a manager.

I agree - why doesn't he ask himself - if Redknapo was such a good manager , why did a 2-0 lead at the Emirates turn into a complete humiliation? Why did the FA cup semi against Chelsea turn into a complete humiliation with the same squad plus Ade and Modric? A defeat is a defaet but how you can be that worried for the season ahead based on that performance?

If Redknapp was such a poor manager, how come he took 4 points off the 5th best side in the league last season?

Redknapp isn't a poor manager though is he? The whole point is that the best managers have bad days at the office and unlucky days at the office and shouldn't be judged on them alone

I can be worried about the season based on that performance because we we're so predictable. It's plan A or bust.

What were the stats from yesterday? Something like 15 shots compared to their 7? Hitting the woodwork twice. Losing to a fantastic finish and a penalty. Without 3 key positions being addressed. You are honestly worried about the season considering all of that? If you are, I'd suggest you worry too much.

If we had played like Saudi Sportswashing Machine did yesterday and won, I'd have been more worried to be honest. But I think our performance showed we were really on the right track, and once we get those extra bits of quality, we will be getting the results we deserve more often than not.

I agree.

I thought our pressing was really taking shape, I always thought Defoe looked a bit headless-chicken like with his pressing, but looked a lot better now and it's just the first game of the season.

The lack of purpose in our slow buildup play was the biggest worry, but hopefully by the time the window slams shut we'll have a deep playmaker in place and available so a Sandro and Livermore/Parker central midfield duo will only happen rarely.

I thought Bale looked improved, I thought he made way more purposeful runs around their box than he did last season. Lennon looked about as fresh as he's ever done at the start of a season.

Still several things that need sorting out of course, but good early signs for me.

I agree with most of the posts over the last few pages (the sane ones obviously not the trolling 'fearful' ones) but I would like to say:

Bale must stay left and Lennon right for 95 percent of games.

When Bale is left he hurts the right back, gets him yellow carded, is the focus of our attacks, penetrates their back line... Then he disappears for 20 mins doing nowt except clutter up space.

Africanspurs; we do understand the concept of coming inside, numbers in the middle, leaving space for BAE but I STRONGLY disagree that Bale should drift.

He could get the right back sent off in EVERY game if he stuck at it

Quite. A very bad case of confirmation bias I fear.

Of course the last 2 lines are linked to the first 2, would be a bit departed if I made the first 2 paragraphs and then said "i have a great feeling about the club at the moment".

But ironic that 2 of the worst culprits for bias under Harry have picked up on my comments. The difference is, we lose the first game and didnt look very good at all - so what other first impression can I get? I've stated very clearly it is a first impression and as always I'll say it exactly how it is in the future - if we win out next 10 games I'll be impressed with AVB. Compare that with your assessment of Harry, and you pretty much completely went against any evidence we had and put your hand over your ears while screaming "i hate harry im not listening to you".

When did Bale hurt their right back yesterday?

When he got the ball isolated against Simpson. A lot of whinging in the OMT if I remember correctly that Bale wasn't performing actually. And he stayed on the left for most of the game.

We have to get him the ball in those situations, he's not Messi or Ronaldo, we can't expect him to pick the ball up facing the wrong way at the half way line, skip past a couple of players and only then be in a position to hurt their full back. When our overall game plan doesn't work, when our passing through the middle doesn't work he's primarily effective on the left when we attack on the break after just winning the ball. He can inflict similar pain on the right in those situations and possibly be more of a threat in and around the box cutting onto his left foot from the right.

A lot of people complaining every time Bale pops up on the right while completely ignoring the preceding 25+ minutes of him being on the left without making anything happen.
