AVB & Spurs Tactics and Formations discussion thread

very good work from the team. clearly there is a different approach today and fundamentally its good, just need to build on it. i see alot of resolute defending and a decent amount of clean sheets in our future

incidentally, how about that bale switching wings , coming off the left and wandering into the middle eh? thankfully AVB doesnt see things like some of us would like. Bale needs to come off the left flank regularly

could we do 4-5-1, have Defoe lone striker, have VDV & Siggy in midield next together?

Defoe

Bale Siggy Vdv Sandro Lennon

Ekotto Kaboul Vertonghen Walker

Friedel

Thought we looked awesome, highlife worked great, loadso f attempted long balls straight through the friedel, pressing was great. If we had a little more creativity in the middle (modric for Livermore) and a striker that fits we would have been so comfortable.

Also with regards to bale switching wings, it worked because it was always fleeting, under redknapp it used tobe for long periods and it was annoying and didn't work. Today they generally struck, bit at times changed then went back quite quickly after. This is how it should be done.

I dont agree with that at all.

I dont think we were 'awesome' - Awesome was 3-1 Inter, or 1-0 Milan away.

This was a fairly competent performance against a very ordinary Noocastle side. We are lacking players that is obvious.

I also dont agree with the whole Bale/Lennon 'fleeting' moment. It was as much or more than what Harry would have done.

I think the performance was competent but in summary until we get those two or three much needed players we wont get to 'awesome' which is what you want and we all want. AVB kinda surprised me with the way the team played bUT like I say Noocastle were poor today and in all honesty there for the taking

result aside, very happy, both goals came from individual mistakes and we were unlucky to only get one

very promising

From what I saw today I concluded that:
1. There is no way we will succeed with Defoe (or Kane) as our main striker in AVB's formation/tactics. But I'm not sure if it will suit Ade either.
2. The Sigurdsson position is key. Because when the CF move wides it creates a space which they must exploit. So whoever plays there has to be a goal scorer.
3. The defence as a whole need to be more comfortable on the ball. Or at least the two CBs, Friedel and possibly Walker.
4. We have plenty of resources for the two defensive midfielders, but whoever plays there need to be able to support attacks quickly and play the ball forward quickly to set up goal scoring chances. I don't think that is Livermore or Jenas.

Let's hope we can make some good signings in what remains of the transfer window.

i can agree with this. but thats not what redknapp got slated for. he got slated for allowing bale come off the flanks and encouraging him to switch wings. both of which he did today under AVB. and to be honest, he was frequently tucking in and coming narrow in this game too

thought the Bale - Lennon swapping worked well today.

Lennon did well cutting in to the left and Bale showed how dangerous he can be when running with the ball on the right. We just need Walker and Benoit to get to the line more and give us more width/crosses sent in.

Desperately missed Modric (or a Modric replacement) today. Failed to use the ball well enough or retain possession well enough

Season starts on Sept 1 when we have a creative CM and a decent CF

ANyone heard any diect quotes from AVB about Dawson or Thudd so that we know what the truth was?

I don't want to judge until we get our full squad. We were without Modric, Parker, and Ade today, and I assume AVB cannot be too happy with his FB options either since they are one of the most critical positions in his system.

*sigh* I'd be surprised if we get more than one more signing this window. I think in the end Modric will go for a low-ish fee and we will get Sahin on loan to replace him since Moutinho is just too expensive.

Agree with this. AVB surely must be baffled by the situation. Modric is the massive loss, such a talented player and imo our most important. We will probably bring a striker (hopefully two in) but whether we can replace Modric remains to be seen. I am totally unconvinced Levy will respond in the way we all expected he would when he replaced HR.

Unfortunately it doesn't. It started today against an average Saudi Sportswashing Machine team who were there for the taking. Last season we lost the first 2, against the top 2 who we were always going to lose to. Despite the loss of Modric and Ade, its not like we have a bad squad with no creativity. If AVB is a decent manager, with the midfield we have he should easily be able to get goals and control games. Harry got 4th with Crouch up front, so its not like we have had to rely on superstar players in the past.

First impressions of AVB, well not good unfortunately. Obviously it is only first impression and that can change, but I dont think we have a tactical Jose Mourinho genius in charge of our club. The players werent motivated and the system and play was predictable. All it took was a half time talk from Pardew to tell them this, and they were easily able to put a plan in place for the second half to get the better of us.

I have that Ramos feeling. I hope Im wrong, I hope Harry doesnt have a job before Xmas as I think we may need him...

(but unlike the Harry hating macarons, I'm more than happy to forget this week and change my opinion over the next few weeks if things pick up).

I thought our pressing in the early part of the game was fantastic, in terms of both its intensity and how the players seemed to know exactly what they should be doing. But it really tailed off as the game went on. I think at the moment our inability to dominate possession will make it harder for our pressing game to be as effective - when you don't dominate possession, you simply can't have the energy to press the opposition for the whole game.

I think our possession issues (Saudi Sportswashing Machine had 60%) were just due to having Livermore instead of Modric and Defoe instead of Adebayor. Jermaine's very good at what he does well, but he just doesn't get himself involved in build-up play. Top strikers are great goalscorers, but they all have something else to offer too. Jermaine doesn't really. It's a shame that he doesn't involve himself more in build-up play, because I don't think it would stop him from getting into the sane goalscoring positions anyway. And I think he has the physical and technical attributes to offer something in that respect.

Overall a good performance - better than I was anticipating - and if we can get in good players in the two roles that we all know we need, I think Villas-Boas might well do good things here.

All these judgements after just one game of course!

P.S. I still wish Bale would stop drifiting into deep areas and the right wing. I understand wanting to vary his game, but he's just not very effective from these areas. I think he should instead focus on being a left-winger / forward - if he doesn't want to just hug the touchline, then try and make runs beyond defenders and into goalscoring positions instead. You're not Pirlo!

I think Lennon's better than Bale at playing on the opposite wing and in areas in between the lines, because he has better close control and a far better and quicker change of direction. I thought he looked good. Would love for him to have an injury-free season and really take off.

this pressing brick is always going to tire the players out because when we win the ball we dont keep it and in effect take a rest. It will be a common theme under AVB, dont expect any different
