American politics

Trump is just an opportunist who says outrageous things to get free publicity. He doesn't believe half of what he says. Cruz, or Grand Pa Munster as I prefer to address him is scarier. He is much more rabidly right wing than Trump and he really believes in the crap that he spouts.

this will be by far the ugliest presidential campaign ever, democrats have such an easy job now, all they have to do is quote all the republican big wigs that will refuse to vote for their own nominee.

It won't be all that easy. Especially not if there are more classified emails to come out from the Clinton hack.

That's also assuming Billary can avoid publicly lying for a few months (something neither of them have previously managed).

That said, it should still be a comfortable Democrat win, but it will be ugly for both sides. Although I'm giving up predictions about the US as I was convinced Trump couldn't run for the Republicans.

Trump is not afraid to kick up any type of dirt.

His response to him being a woman hater was pretty classic....

Dan Carlin made the point that a Trump vs. Hillary race can be unpredictable just because it's such a rare situation to have someone like Trump there in the mix. Can't really use previous campaigns to compare it to, because when has there been a candidate like Trump?

What I still don't get is that (to my understanding) the Republicans could still find a candidate and block him, they just can't agree on anyone.

Also a need to maintain the veneer of democracy ;)

Agreeing on someone is one thing. Not having a candidate around that could beat Hillary is probably another reason.

The republican party really has been mutilated by their more extreme right wing and religious factions.

Still got the feeling that they may persuade Mitt Romney to "save" the nation from Trump.

He's already lost a presidential race though. Rare to see someone get a second bite at that race having already been labelled a "loser". And he lost to a black man whose middle name is Hussein and whose last name is one letter removed from Osama. I'm sure he gets that one repeated to him at the local country club all the time. What a faux pas.

The Republicans surely wouldn't try and get another candidate to usurp Trump now. If they did, Trump would almost certainly run as an independent, split the Republican vote and they'd lose the election anyway.

They may as well get behind Trump because he might win, whereas if they go the other route, they will certainly lose.

And destroy the party long term.

They just have to suck it up and let a few very vocal anti-Trump GOPers try and derail him in the media etc
(A bit like the Labour party!)

Then spend Hilary's presidency picking key battles to make the Democrats look clueless and the GOP as the "answer" come the next election.
If (and this is the fundamental bit) they just do enough to Trump out, they can then write the narrative for Hilary's presidency.

He is on par with Clinton now

He might just get in, on the basis no one has any faith in her

I think the closer we get to November the more we'll see Democrats use the same approach as the 'stay' campaign for both the Scottish and EU referendums. Emphasising that he's an unknown quanity, we don't know how the markets will react, your families could suffer etc etc... Putting doubts into people's minds just as their going off to vote should be enough to asway it Clinton's way.

But as Scara said, being a Clinton she may have some kind of scandal to come out which could harm her campaign. Maybe even one that Trump's saving for later.

That was a theory, that Trump was not rising to bait on people digging him out because 1 - his ratings were not affected by the digs and 2 - he is keeping his Aces with Clinton up his sleeve.

I think the stark reality is that America is in a bad way, Clinton is not the answer and Trump is not the answer, can't be a worse time to be an American than now

still over 5 months till the election and campaigning won;t start in earnest till the conventions are over, Trump might even go ahead in the polls but once the dirty ads start hitting the fan, its hard to see mainstream america voting him in
