2022 World Cup... gonna ruin the European Season

I don’t know about it not being enough, but it doesn’t mean anything. A team putting their hand over their mouth? Wow. What is that going to do? Raise awareness? Nope, every man and their dog already knows about the issues in Qatar well before now. Prevent the issues happening in the future in Qatar? Nope. You can get excited about what further things teams will do, but it’s just empty gestures. The only thing that really would have made the world stand up and take notice was if the teams boycotted the World Cup. Teams prepared to participate in Qatar but doing a team photo with their hand over their mouth, or wearing a colourful captains armband is not a powerful message whatsoever and does not help anything except ticking a box for appearances sake….

I think it can have some positive impact.

First of all when you say awareness is raised sufficiently, are you talking about world wide? I think this can create awareness and conversations in places where it's previously has been lacking.

I also think on an individual level this can have an impact. For example for younger people experiencing discrimination. Having these footballers making a stand, any stand, can have some positive impact.

I also think this is uncomfortable both for FIFA and the hosts. I think they would have preferred for this not to happen. Rather obvious with the threat of sanctions for the armband, they do not want that. If this makes it more uncomfortable for FIFA to do this again I support it.

I don't think this is very powerful or will have a big impact. But I'd much rather have someone do a little than nothing at all. I hope it inspires others to do the same or more.

i'm actually on the side of fifa this time. don't politicise the event. fit in with the host country. or don't come.

The event is, has been, will be inherently political.

The hosts invited the world their. Invite the world or don't, but don't invite the world and tell them to bring all of the show and none of the values or opinions.

Same for FIFA. Don't hand tur tournament to someone that will do that.

Spot on

Either Invite people to your country under the banner of a sport that is inclusive to everyone, or don't bother bribing people to win it in the first place.

Canada look decent, Belgium doing their usual of over promising and under delivering. Think their time has gone now.

I think you’ve hit the crux of the matter.
This all comes down to FIFA, their greed, their arrogance, their corruption.
Qatar will likely not be changing its ways any time soon. Ways I heartily disagree with BTW.
But the real issue here is that FIFA had the arrogance to think they could force a nation to shift its cultural ways for one month, AND trouser a large amount of cash in exchange for ‘helping’ a nation try to sportwash itself into international/western ‘acceptance’.
The ONLY change we can hope for, is FIFA to be brought to their knees.
As for Qatar itself, I personally despise their beliefs on homosexuality, slave labour and womens rights, but I don’t live there, it is not my country, and I don’t feel personally I can ‘demand’ that they ‘change their ways’, it would surely be the height of western arrogance to do so?
FIFA should never have taken the money.
There again, I think FIFA should be either broken up and re-assembled, or replaced by a new footballing body.

I think this is, again, a crux point.

I think your last line is where I was always at with this. The blinding arrogance on FIFA’s part was never going to end well.
