2022 World Cup... gonna ruin the European Season

Back in the 60's very few football players were over 6', big centreforward were about 5'10", Bobby Smith was 5'9". Rugby has changed massively, smaller fast guys on wing and half backs , stocky players in front row, now in any position they're all massive. Cricketers are power hitters and tall fast bowlers

I wasn't even born back in the 60s, so can't comment on that really. But over the last decades I struggle to see a direction towards more height. I'm sure there is more strength in some ways at least, fitter, better trained players.

Last decade even. That Barca side, Spain, Emirates Marketing Project, Liverpool. Sure they've had one or two tall and often (not always) dominant centre backs. Bit of height in midfield (Busquets, Rodri, Fabinho). Other than that it's been mostly short or average height. Several of the best players in the world have been relatively (or outright) small.

Redknapp said Xavi and Iniesta may not even have made it as footballers in England (or something like that). Now that's no longer true. The shorter, more agile, quick tempo elegant midfielders are very much in fashion and appreciated.

How many keepers under 6'?, again when I started watching the Hogkinson, Hopkinson, Springett, Bonetti all England internationals were 5'10" or under, Banks was 6'. Lloris at 6'2" looks smaller than most today.

I think keepers are one of the exceptions personally. Definitely a preference for height, or at least relative height there. Some other positions too, but not significantly more than it used to be 20-30 years ago I think.

Rooting even more for Germany now.

Definitely. I've seen it being criticised for being not enough. But it's a hell of a lot better to do something than nothing and this could also be one step of several with either Germany or others being willing to do more.

If for example England players are watching this, I think they may look at that and think "we could have done that", "we could do that", "perhaps we could even do more" or thoughts in that kind of direction.

They just showed on TV one of Germany's government ministers at the game wearing the armband.

Apparently Denmark have said they are looking to get a group of UEFA countries together to look at pulling away from FIFA. Can't see it happening, but it's all good noise.

They'd need to have some of the big guns on board for that to happen, and even then it wouldn't be very likely. But as you say, good noise, maybe it will be enough to steer FIFA away from corruption and bigotry, towards being an organisation that actually care about football, democracy and human rights.

I'm liking the results this wc has given us so far. It's literally been a game of two halfs in many games, with teams dominating one half each, often the favourites in the first half. Wonder if the heat has something to do with it?
Although I've heard that it's relatively cool down at pitch level, due to the massive AC units blowing cool air to the pitch.
Yesterday Saudi Arabia ran more than 11 kilometres more than Argentina! That's massive! Would love to see those stats for Germany - Japan.

I don’t know about it not being enough, but it doesn’t mean anything. A team putting their hand over their mouth? Wow. What is that going to do? Raise awareness? Nope, every man and their dog already knows about the issues in Qatar well before now. Prevent the issues happening in the future in Qatar? Nope. You can get excited about what further things teams will do, but it’s just empty gestures. The only thing that really would have made the world stand up and take notice was if the teams boycotted the World Cup. Teams prepared to participate in Qatar but doing a team photo with their hand over their mouth, or wearing a colourful captains armband is not a powerful message whatsoever and does not help anything except ticking a box for appearances sake….

i'm actually on the side of fifa this time. don't politicise the event. fit in with the host country. or don't come.

Which is exactly why I'm not on the side of fifa!

Expecting Qatar to change their stance on things like homosexuality and many, many more things that don't align with western views is madness

Choosing them/ allowing them to host is the issue

Shame on you fifa

I certainly don't agree with Qatari stances on a lot of human right, but I'm also not comfortable with alignment with Western values, western values aren't always all that great.
It's a pity we can't take all the good bits from other cultures, drop the dodgy bits and get on with each other.

The gestures work if they are going to tinkle people off, the arm band was going to tinkle people off, then we bottled it, thats when the gestures lose their merit. I have seen the clips of Keane and Wright on this and they said it better than anyone, take a stand, shame them into a punishment, take the punishement which show you put something on the line and you have made a much stronger point than you would imagine. Threaten the stance and then back down, then why even bother.
