2022 World Cup... gonna ruin the European Season

Senegal v Netherlands was a proper contest. Played in the night though, might make a difference.

Jenssen and Bergwjin... Not really lighting it up but the rest of the Orange team looks great. De Jong so silky...

About time we look at Senegal players too.

They're all midgets up front. Actually they've got a couple of midget CB's too...
This midget theory needs to be revisited.

I'm watching Senegal v Nederlands and the midgets are Jensson and Bergwjin who can't stamp their presence.

Senegal on the other hand, so many big, strong, mobile and fast players, making dumfries, van dijk, ake look ordinary.

Football will follow American sport, dominated by freaks, the average size of sportsman has increase steadily from the 70's, taller, heavier and fitter.

Fitter we've seen a lot of.

Would be interested to see if the taller and heavier have changed over time in football. At least in the PL fewer teams playing with big target men strikers. I'd even say perhaps more somewhat shorter centre backs around now. Long ball teams have diminished significantly.

I think football may be a bit different to some other sports in that regard. But on the fitness front there's a big difference.

I’m not sure. Stamina is key in football. There’s actually been quite a convergence of footballers being between about 5’10”-6’2”, bulky legs but skinny from the waist up. You don’t really get battering ram CF or enormous CBs or GKs any more.

Back in the 60's very few football players were over 6', big centreforward were about 5'10", Bobby Smith was 5'9". Rugby has changed massively, smaller fast guys on wing and half backs , stocky players in front row, now in any position they're all massive. Cricketers are power hitters and tall fast bowlers

That’s just general evolution though isn’t it? 1960’s are 60 years ago now, people may have been an inch or so smaller in general then? I’m sure we have some experts on this sort of thing on here, we have “experts” in everything else!

How many keepers under 6'?, again when I started watching the Hogkinson, Hopkinson, Springett, Bonetti all England internationals were 5'10" or under, Banks was 6'. Lloris at 6'2" looks smaller than most today.

That will be part of it but in general professional sportsmen are bigger than average height is virtually all countries in the world.

I remember Horst Hrubesch, who was a head taller than the rest of his teammates. It made for a really funny sight when his teammates went to hug him after he scored. It looked like a 25-year old playing with the U10s.
