2022 World Cup... gonna ruin the European Season

Part of the purpose of wearing this armband was to raise awareness. That's been done in spades already and FIFA's cloth-eared reaction has served to magnify the issue before the armband has been worn.

Sporting sanctions? It's a fudging yellow card. He's not being suspended or banned. F**k off.

Jesus Christ..."We're prepared to support a cause until the most minute of pressure or inconvenience is applied to us."

Shameful day for football and shameful day for Tottenham Hotspur given our star player is the face of this.

Are you sure Jesus Christ said that?

Totally agree with you btw. I also feel a little more vindicated not watching this brickshow now.

Mind you, that joint statement does say "...so we have asked our captains not to attempt to wear the armbands in FIFA World Cup games...".
So still leaving the door open for each captain to decide (unless there is a separate directive from each FA to its players)?
I wouldn't be surprised to see it being worn during the pre-match warm-up. Or maybe Southgate will wear it instead.
I still think Kane might wear it, though that may just be wishful thinking on my behalf.

Another thought : he could wear it during post match interviews?

Just don't watch it then and don't comment on the games etc...no need to keep virtue signalling, actions speak louder than words, and (sadly) money talks, bullsh!t walks...(as ironically @Baleforce seems to live his football experience by haha)

He should have a double sided one, Keep it rainbow up to kick off, Switch it to black and white for the game, then change it back after.
OR
Just have some balls and wear it!

Even if it has, these players and FAs have shown us they're more in the FIFA camp than in to standing up for what's right. They're more concerned with serving their own interests than standing up for what's right.

The damage here, for me at least, is huge.

And as much as the news is loud now it will soon be forgotten after today which is what FIFA are banking on, its how the bully boys work.

As opposed to us wearing it, causing a major reaction that would live for a lifetime, thats what this situation needs

Guarantee you that the FIFA response will be:

"No. no. We aren't against inclusivity at all and this wasn't done under pressure from the Qatar government. This was done because we have several causes that we wanted highlighted through the armbands and these 7 countries were deviating from that."

And why wouldn't you trust the word of the money grabbing hypocrites?

Probably wishful thinking, though I share your wish.

Just too much to put that responsibility on one individual, without any backing of the relevant associations. Not even leaving it up to the individual captain, but actively asking them not to wear it. So any player still attempting it would be going against their own FA as well as FIFA.

The absolute utmost respect to any captain choosing to stand up to this on his own.

Wearing it before or after the game may be fine. Would be something I guess.

And there we have it.

I feel so disappointed. In a country where you can literally be stoned to death for being homosexual, we fold at the threat of a mere yellow card.
Don't bother taking the knee, it's meaningless.

100%, if we fold then sadly it makes it look like an empty gesture.

Kane should take the booking, would highlight the cause, make FIFA look shameful and realistically he should be able to go 90 mins without picking up a second yellow.

As Baleforce says though: what rule would they use? The official rule is the ref will ask you to remove inappropriate kit, that’s it.

A sad day all round & very disappointed at the the hypocrisy shown by so many people.

Anyone can say any words.

Us brits (in general, not yourself) can be naive of that compared to others nations imo. Just all bs.

It has raised awareness, but way less than if someone took a stand against FIFA by wearing it.

Still think the relevant FAs and captains deserve some praise for trying, and for raising that awareness. They've done more than most, more than France and Lloris for example. But still, disappointing to see them back down, though to some extent I can understand the decision. They've been working towards sporting success at the World Cup for years and years, it really matters to them. Just wish someone would make that stand.

I think some of them may end up regretting the opportunity they let slip through their fingers.

90 minutes without picking up a booking should definitely be doable, though perhaps limit him somewhat. Much worse for those captains that play at the back or in midfield of course.

More than that there's the risk of suspension later in the tournament. One more yellow and they could miss out in games that could be crucial. But hypothetical, but none the less a real potential downside.

At the very least wear t-shirts with One Love on it for the warm-up. Captains being booked would highlight it even more though.
Would be nice to see refs take a stand as well and refuse to book players, but we know that won't happen.

The mighty yellow card is enough to have players and associations scurrying for cover:rolleyes:.

I can't quite work this out. Morgan Freeman, Infantino et al....were banging on about 'oneness' 'inclusiveness' in the opening gonads, but when teams want to wear a 'one love' armband (er....the same message?), nope we'll sanction you...wtf. (I'm guessing it's the rainbow imagery and it's representation of LGBTQ and that jarring against the host countries beliefs and laws)

I think FIFA have left the door open here, to the brave (well, just someone with a spine tbh). They haven't threatened expulsion, just a measly yellow card. The team could all wear a armband? My feeling is this is going to be down to an individual, the FA are an embarrassment.

The WC is poop.

If you've not picked up a booking, wear it in the last group game if bookings are then zeroed after the group stage.
