2022 World Cup... gonna ruin the European Season

I remember hearing Iranian activists wanting England fans to join them in the stadium to show gestures of support for the Iranians being oppressed by the Iranian regime...This is the thing with football being by far the world's most popular sport: everyone wants to further a cause or highlight a campaign using it

I think its more a case that the game is not and should not be above global conversations

FIFA and a fair few other countries will love that.....do we really want the likes of Kane etc throwing their careers down the drain, or kids from Stepney, Norwich etc switching allegiances to other countries because of England not having chances to play in international tournaments? Does it stop being really about football at that point?

If people really want to make a stand i'd suggest:

a) find out the corporate conglomerates who always want to align themselves with what was 'the people's game' so that they can advertise, sell their wares etc
b) assume all were happy to have the world cup in Qatar and take Qatari money directly or via FIFA
C) Boycott them going forwards if you feel so strongly; don't buy their products, set-up online campaigns detailing why they are being boycotted etc. If Nike are one of them, don't buy any of their boots, training gear, kits (including Spurs) etc
d) Identify any companies who pulled out of being associated with the Qatar world cup for the reasons of human rights etc and instead put your money et towards them, and use an online campaign to state so, share information etc

Of course, this is going to be difficult; but if that's honestly something you feel so strongly about it is doable.

If no doabale, then as i say, when it comes to the crunch: money talks, bullsh!t walks...

Don't think withdrawing from FIFA will be on the table at any point. On that we agree.

I agree too about some of the suggestions you make. But I don't think that's the only thing that can work. I also think that if a player or two took a stand, forced FIFA to follow up on their bullying threats or back down it would lead to more people doing what you suggest. But also increase the pressure on FIFA in other ways, including through sponsors potentially.

The kind of public reaction you're suggesting I think is often a result of people with more influence and visibility making a stand. That opportunity was there, but has, for now at least, been lost.

I looked that up earlier as I had the same thought. But :
The yellow card count carries from the group stage to the knockout phase, but it is reset to zero in the semifinals. That means players won’t miss a final due to yellow card accumulation from different games. They can still be ruled out if they see the red card in the semis.
But the semifinals don’t wipe out suspensions. Therefore, players who receive their second yellow card in the quarterfinals do miss the following round. But those who get to the semis with just one yellow card, have the count cleared to zero.

Exactly. So including the final group game there are potentially several key win or get knocked out games a player could miss because of one regular yellow card in addition to a Qatar/FIFA special yellow for showing that you're for inclusion, against discrimination.

Doesn't make the decision to back down right. But I think it's at least understandable.

Can only hope that the people involved who have been bullied into backing down by FIFA/Qatar will keep the memory of this with them, taking many opportunities in the future to keep highlighting this issue and show the proverbial finger to the bigots and those who do their bidding.

fudge FIFA and the trojan horse filled with corrupt money they rode in on.

To the extent that football can be a force for good in the world this would be one of them.

FIFA puts a lot of demands on countries organising the World Cup. They could probably easily include demands about pay, treatment and safety of workers building the infrastructure for the damned thing. If not for the fact that this would cost the hosts, and thus FIFA, money.

Be a real part of those conversations, or be indifferent to suffering, or increase that suffering by greed and corruption. FIFA seem dead set on the latter.
