2022 World Cup... gonna ruin the European Season

First World Cup since 82 where I’ve not watched the opening game.

Not that I remember Bulgaria / Italy in 86, but my dad is adamant we watched it.

Can’t believe you don’t remember that. One of THE classic games.

Reckon we should pass it round and get every single player booked - make the whole first 5 minutes a complete farce. Then challenge the other European sides to do the same

A seriously good idea.

I have a feeling a lot of those questions are playing out as an internal debate in your head right now. ;)

Everything I write now will probably feel like a personal attack on you and others watching it, but please don't take it like that. It is just my opinion.

For me there is no way to view this without feeling like I am selling out. All of us make unethical choices in daily life constantly. The food we eat, the pollution we cause, the causes we support or ignore, etc. We compartmentalise these choices as we must do, especially where there may be limited access to other options, but mostly as it is just convenient to do so. Watching the world cup however is something I fully control, and if I somehow justified to myself watching it for whatever contrived reason who would I be fooling?

The PR around this WC already is already going wrong in all sorts or ways and this will only snowball through the tournament I would guess. Their attempt at sports washing has already failed in my opinion but it is unlikely it will have any lasting effect unless something more serious happens, maybe even something on the pitch.

Definitely all playing out, part of why I brought it up and wanted input from yourself and others.

I definitely don't read any of that as a personal attack. I imagine it would be fairly easy to make statements about this issue that feel like personal attacks. I appreciate your empathy in not doing that.

I agree we all make unethical choices. I'm still not quite sure if this is one I can live with or not. Cheers for your input. Same to you Grays_1890. Food for thought.

Didn't watch the opener. Life in the way, but also letting life be in the way and not making it a priority. That's probably where I'll land, not going out of my way to watch stuff, make less of an effort than I usually would.

Brought me some joy that Qatar lost and people went home after an hour. More of this please.

Denmark have said they'll wear it regardless of any sanctions.

Very good. Was actually thinking yesterday that Denmark may be one of the teams that could kick up a fuzz. Easier when the realistic chances of going all the way are smaller. Some good experienced players who seem like genuinely good people. And of course the Eriksen experience strengthening other perspectives than just results being important in football.

Wales too. Good to see, somewhat similar example. Hope more teams join them. Don't back down to FIFA, make them actually put their sanctions in place and increase the pressure.

There was a reminder today to fans that appearing intoxicated and/or going shirtless is unacceptable and breaks stadium rules! Also for a nice little touch they added... Tattoos do not count as clothing lol

At least several countries willing to do a little bit. There being more of them will show some strength.

Absolute travesty from FIFA if the captains are immediately booked, but at least some willing to stand up to them.

Would be proud to see both Kane and Bale take that stand. Wish Lloris would reconsider and do the same. Not sure who will actually captain Denmark on the pitch, may another former Spurs player in Eriksen get it?

Both England and Wales having games this early in the tournament could be a good thing. If they follow through, regardless of what FIFA/the ref does, it will put some pressure on others to do the same.

I imagine FIFA will be having meetings about what to do. Can they back down? Can they accept showing "weakness" in that way, what will the hosts think of that if they do? On the other hand can they accept actually handing out yellow cards for this, surely there will be a significant blow back.

If nothing else it's good to imagine FIFA having to sweat this kind of thing. Hope it ruins the best laid plans of having a good time, hope it ruins Infantino's day.

it sounded this morning as if the FA might be rowing back on the armband, if FIFA make it punishable by a yellow card rather than a fine. I wonder whether if the FA categorically told Kane not to wear it as it is not in England's best interests for him to take a booking, would Kane still be able to go ahead?

Difficult to know. But what we can know is that backing down on this is not a good look when others follow through.

I really hope they and more countries make a stand.
