General Transfer Discussion Thread

Re: World Cup 3rd Place Playoff - Brazil vs Netherlands

I was trying to find the Paulinho thread to post the Juve story but it's locked?

Re: World Cup 3rd Place Playoff - Brazil vs Netherlands

Oh well, I'll be the one I suppose (along with Norwegian)…I think there's a great player in there if Poch can find him. Must be exhausted after 2 years of virtual non-stop football, his confidence took an absolute beating last season under two different managers, Sherwood ****ed him publicly then bizarrely started to pick him again (confused? i'm sure he was) and he was part of a Brazil squad which was woefully under-prepared. Did he start the Germany semi? Nope. Would he have made a difference? Probably not. But had Big Phil chosen Alves or ANYONE but Maicon, had his DMs actually sat and done their job, and had Ramires played, that game might have been a lot tighter. As it is, they have come undone in terrible fashion, and Big Phil has genuinely undone a good percentage of his rep for me during this effort. But they still have some GREAT players, and as for Paulinho, I believe he could be a fine player for us still if Poch can get him rested and get his confidence back. As for 'one of our worst signings', no no, I could write a long list which wouldn't include him...

But would you take the 20 mill from Juve? Right now if it is offered?

No.
If I was the manager, I would sit with the player, tell him he is to be an important part of my plans, that I want him to be a more attacking, box-to-box connector type, that I see him as someone who can provide goals from midfield positions, that I want him to take a full 4 weeks off, come back just before the season starts rested, that I would slowly phase him into the team and that he has my full confidence.

The only way I'd take $20 mill of Juve's money for him is if we were absolutely certain to be able to get Julian Draxler, but let's be honest, how on earth is that going to happen?

It's about making sure we have the quality to replace for me mate...

Re: World Cup 3rd Place Playoff - Brazil vs Netherlands

I'd sell him for what we bought him tbh. Would be amazing. Not writing him off completely but I'm not sure he's what we need tbh. I've been one to say give him a chance but the more and more I see of him the more I think we can do without

I certainly see that POV, I've just seen enough glimpses to believe that he is a fine, fine footballer if everything is normal and I would 'personally' give him that chance…of course, I'd be on Indian's side re: sale if Draxler was coming!!!! Then my loyalty and patience might be tested. There again, knowing me, I'd keep him and sell Moussa!!!!!!!!

I get your points, I'm not surprised you said no and that's fair enough.

I would love to give him a chance, but I just think the money on offer if true is just too good an opportunity to turn down. We can give him all the rest he needs but we can't guarantee we will find a player useful to us at the end of it.

Look at David Luiz. The same mistakes game after game. Mourinho has taken the 50 mill after one season and Chelski move on. Some offers are just too unbelievable to say thanks but no thanks. The 20 mill for Paulinho would give Poch a substantial sum to go for a player or two he may want.

Think about it, even if we sold Paulinho and didn't buy anyone, would we cope? I think we would be just fine

I'm not totally sold on him but I think it's worth giving him a bit more time to show us the powerhouse he was for Corinthians and Brazil before we bought him.

If I was manager, I'd tell him that I don't want to see him for a month. Go on holiday. To hell with pre season. To hell with the beginning of this season. Take a first proper break in two years and recharge the batteries.

Then let's see what he's made of.

I'm normally for giving players a chance and I constantly look for the good in Paulinho's play. But let's face it, there is little to justify the sort of money we paid. Take the money and sign Draxler, Schneiderlin, Bony, Rodriguez, whoever.

I kinda agree with this. He shows flashes of what he can do and even tonight made some decent runs. The problem jhowever is that in his role as a deeper midfielder he often didn't offer much of an option for his defenders to pass to. He certainly wasn't worth the money we paid though, but then again £16 million could just be the going rate these days.

Re: Levy…Baldini…Poch…SOMEBODY - pull your finger out!!

Is anyone else getting increasingly frustrated by the amount of VERY DECENT signings being made by our supposed rivals, whilst we seem to sit on our arses with barely a decent name in the rumour mill, let alone consider concrete possibilities!!

We're losing ground on those around us, and whilst we wasted 90-odd million last heart on crap like Paulinho and Chadli, Liverpool, Arsenal and alike are genuinely strengthening their squads, and more importantly, getting them in in time to get some serious pre-season time in!

Chelsea - Fabregas, Costa

Liverpool - Lambert, Lallana, Emre Can, advanced talks for Origi and Markovic

Arsenal - Debuchy and Sanchez v.likely, Balotelli still very possible. Walcott to return will feel like a new-ish signing.

Man Utd - Herrera, Shaw, LOUIS VAN GAAL!

I know Poch needs to assess the team, but I fear we are falling behind very quickly already and need to pull our finger out if we're to have any chance of avoiding another dull 5th/6th place playoff with Everton!

You should know by now that failure to make CL will always impact our ability to attract top players

Nah - it's the wages we can afford to pay.

Even when we got CL we still couldn't attract top players (other than fluking vdV).

Exactly. CL is very overrated in attracting players.

What matters is money. Just like we weren't able to sign a better quality of player when we made the CL, you can see that as soon as Emirates Marketing Project got bought by Arabs, they set about signing the likes of Robinho, even though they were at the time a nothing, mid-table team who he (Robinho) had probably never heard of.

I know he was mentioned earlier, but couldn't find the appropriate thread and no actual rumours so far, but how about Rojo for our left back troubles?

Massively upped profile after the world cup, wouldn't be cheap and all that. But could he be gettable and the answer to our problems?

Would love Rojo. Liverpool been linked to him (and pretty much everyone). He knows when to get forward and when to stay, athletic, great in the air. What's not to like.

For me Rojo, Vlaar, Clasie, Konoplyanka.

I know there is a lack of PL experience there aside from Vlaar, but those would be some great signings. Sell Siggy, Paulinho, Kaboul/Daws, Ekotto

Isn't Rojo another like Vertonghen......prefers to play at centre back but plays at left back for the national team?

I know he plays both at least. Thought he looked a lot more comfortable at left back than Vertonghen did at the World Cup at least.

Haven't heard it said that he wants to be thought of as a central defender the way Verts has, if so then he's obviously not suitable a left back target.
