General Transfer Discussion Thread

Re: Levy…Baldini…Poch…SOMEBODY - pull your finger out!!

The signing of a new contract by Hugo Lloris is an excellent start!! Best keeper in the Premiership.

This. Tie Verts down to a new deal, and we'd have finished half our business already. If not, sell him for 20 plus million and use that money on Lovren. :p

Re: Levy…Baldini…Poch…SOMEBODY - pull your finger out!!

Last WC summer we didn't make our first signing till 20 August.

I'm not sure there's that many players at the latter stages of the WC we've been looking at though tbh - Rojo, Depay maybe? I can't really think of any others

We've also been linked with Blind and Draxler.

Re: Levy…Baldini…Poch…SOMEBODY - pull your finger out!!

All we need is a left back and a deep lying play maker and then we should be good.

Re: Levy…Baldini…Poch…SOMEBODY - pull your finger out!!

Oh my GHod what a total drama queen- this is what sky generation has done for football. Honestly it's like that kid whose parents give him a new toy for Xmas and he is overjoyed and plays with it for a bit then his brother opens his present and it's a slightly different toy so the kid drops his new toy and runs over wanting his brothers toy. Its not any better, its just different and it's NOT HIS!

Guys our Xmas was last summer we did 3 transfer Windows shopping last summer and our performances suffered. This summer is about getting a decent coaching team in to assess the large and young squad we've built and get a handle on how best to use the toys we got last summer and the toys we made yourself out of bits of fire wood in the garage (academy)

We've got a really competitive squad that will be much stronger than last season as we actually hopefully see what the likes of Lamela, soldado, capoue do with some proper coaching and more settled team

Re: Levy…Baldini…Poch…SOMEBODY - pull your finger out!!

Everyone talks about Lamela as the one to watch for next season and rightly so, but Im really looking forward to seeing more of Capoue - think hes going to be a big player for us....

I wouldn't mind seeing him and Sandro as a double pivot. Anyone who can move the ball quicker than Dembele or Paulinho.

Re: Levy…Baldini…Poch…SOMEBODY - pull your finger out!!

conversely think about it from the top player's perspective - theres' a few EPL clubs needing reinforcements for the upcoming CL campaign, and they would all like to sign up first before all the spots are taken. no time to waste or risk playing for a non-CL club!

Considering its a world cup year there has been a lot of transfer business at the top teams in the major European leagues....competition is fierce and clubs know they have to get in early to grab their targets.

Vertonghen's agent apparently said he would be looking to quit Tottenham if Barca came knocking.

This is from the skysports paper talk.

Think its pretty obvious that 99.9% of our players would jump at the chance to play for Barca.

Wouldn't surprise me if this happens. Barcelona were linked to Vertonghen last summer, so there may be some interest. Vertonghen has also been rated highly during this World Cup, so will be one likely targeted by the club.

I think that Barca should go for Hummels first though.

Just those that are panicking. Liverpool because they have a tiny squad and are losing their only outstanding player, and United because they are horrendous and have been delaying overhauling their squad for nearly 5 years.

We've got a good squad that needs some cohesion, organisation and motivation.

We need quality, not quantity, so there's reason not to bide our time to make sure we get the right 2 or 3 players.

Verts can leave. I think he's a peak value and will never be as good for us as he was 2012/13.

He's 27. CBs tend to hit their peak about 29-30, so his best years are still very much ahead of him.

I still can't believe people actually think playing moneyball still works. You keep your best players until their understudies start eclipsing them. We sell Verts when Chiriches starts keeping him out of the team, not because we can buy someone crapper for a fraction of the price.

Levy is the Moneyball believer

I wouldn't be surprised if Soon we here that Verts has signed a new extended contract like Lloris has

The reason we aren't in the market yet is that we have a massive squad, expensively assembled, the majority whom (apart from players who have come from the academy teams) have been purchased in the last 2 years.

We don't need a massive transfer binge, we did that last summer:

Lloris (purchased 2012)
Vertonghen (purchased 2012)
Chiriches (purchased 2013)
Dembele (purchased 2012)
Capoue (purchased 2013)
Holtby (purchased 2013)
Paulinho (purchased 2013)
Sigurdsson (purchased 2012)
Chadli (purchased 2013)
Lamela (purchased 2013)
Soldado (purchased 2013)
Eriksen (purchased 2013)

In addition to the above, the following have only just made their breakthrough into the first team:

Kane, Townsend, Rose, Fryers, Veljkovic, Pritchard.

That leaves only Kaboul, Dawson, Assou-Ekotto, Freidel, Sandro, Lennon and Adebayor as longer-term members of the squad.

Pochettino's brief as per Levy's end of season letter is to get the best out of the players bought in last season's splurge and the previous summer. Some of the players like Lamela, Soldado, Capoue, Chadli, have hardly had a chance to show what they can really do yet with a settled system and proper coaching.

I actually saw what Paulinho could do in Brazil's last match, much better from him.

Pochettino will be assessing the squad in training and maybe even the first few friendlies. If there is a position then that he thinks he won't be able to use any of the existing players in then we'll move then.

Its amazing how short term people's memories are when it comes to signings, if we don't purchase 5 superstars a season we're not doing things right. We still haven't seen the best of Lamela, Capoue, Chiriches, Holtby and Eriksen yet, Soldado can only improve on last season and Chadli and Bentaleb will continue to progress from last season's performance.

Also, Adebayor only signed permanently in 2012 so could even be included on your list of "newcomers" rather than as a longer-term member..

That's why I said he's played his best for us. His head has been turned and got the feeling last season he couldn't wait to be out of here.
