General Transfer Discussion Thread

Are Spurs awake???? Do we know the transfer window is open???? I know speculation means nothing but Ive never seen a transfer window with our name not mentioned this little.
All players essential to our squad, (Schneiderlin, Lovren being the main 2) are linked with other clubs. Plus all this Sanchez and Pedro to Liverpool talk is ****ing me off!!!

Whats going on????????

Wer drifting awayyyyy wave after wave. Slowly drifting

Schneiderlin to the Goons is the one that will **** me off ....Can't believe Poch won't try to get him or for that matter, Lovren.

We need to sell before we buy - at the moment we probably only have £14m in the bank from Defoe and Livermore.

And I can't see us making more than 3 signings anyway, and there's still 2 months to go till deadline day.

Our first signing in the last WC summer was made on 20 August.

It looks like Davies will be rocking up in the next few days anyway, so that'll be one.

Well I'd hope we don't wait as long as the last WC summer to make our first signing. That fcuked us up then and surely Levy learned some lessons

Sanchez is no going anywhere.
He will end up at either Utd, City, Liverpool or Arsanal

If only we had the financial power to buy the guy. He is just the hard working talented forward that Poch's team needs

What do you think?

You've never seen our name NOT mentioned this little? So, in other words, you've never seen our name mentioned this much?

Have you been paying attention at all? Schneiderlin and Lovren have both been linked to Spurs - heavily so in Lovren's case.

Plus all this Sanchez and Pedro to Liverpool talk is ****ing me off!!!

That's all it is at the moment........talk. Liverpool can't sign every player they are linked to any more than we can.

Whats going on????????

Lots, I imagine. All behind the scenes. The fact that you can't see it and don't know about it is immaterial. In fact, the fact that you can't see it and haven't heard about it is a good thing. Better that Spurs operate under the radar.

We bought a load of high profile players last summer. Where did that get us? When will people learn that signing players isn't the panacea to all ills? We have signed a new manager this summer - one who, judging by his work at Southampton, will know how to get the best out of the talented but underperforming players that we already have and organise them into a team that is even greater than the sum of its parts.

That is far more important than signing new players (though we will also do that - it's only the beginning of July, for crying out loud).

I very much doubt that we do need to sell before we buy. As you say, we have the Defoe and Livermore money. We also earned some £5m more from player trading than we spent on player trading last summer. In addition, we have an added £40m+ per annum income from the new broadcasting rights deals. Plus increased commercial deals. All this while our wage bill is unlikely to have increased significantly. It might even have been reduced.

So I'm confident that there's plenty of cash to spend if we decide that we need or want to.

We've had zero net spend on transfers for 7 consecutive years now. Anything other than sales income will go towards the stadium. That's just our situation now and for the next 3-4 years.

It's more about the number of players we have than the money really. If there's a player we really want there's always ways.

We've had zero net spend because our wages increased dramatically as we bought a better quality of player and achieved better results. There was no extra money to buy players.

But the new TV deals and the continuing growth of commercial income along with a levelling out of the wage bill means that there is a huge amount more wriggle room for spending on transfers, should we wish to - £40m+ from last season and £40m+ this season.

Not to mention that there will undoubtedly be further sales of fringe players to add to the £20m or so already generated by last season's and this summer's player trading.

Do you not think if we had £100m sloshing around, it wouldn't all go on the stadium? Blimey that's 1/4 of the entire cost.

Just think how much cheaper our loan repayments over the next decade will be if we could pay that much up front.

No, I don't think we would do that at all.

What would be the point of building a shiny, new 60K stadium if the team that plays in it is average as a consequence of having been neglected in favour of building the stadium? There would be empty seats all over the place. Totally counterproductive. We wouldn't be maximising the benefits that the new stadium was supposed to give us. Far better to continue investing in the team, to keep it competitive, while taking on an easily manageable level of debt. That's what borrowing is for - to allow a company to grow but also to continue functioning normally, without cash flow worries. Borrowing isn't inherently a bad thing.

There's a reason why ENIC have done things in the order that they have. Dramatically improve the first team. Grow the fan base. Build the brand. THEN build the stadium. It makes perfect sense. There was no point building the stadium until there was sufficient demand to fill it. But now that they've created that demand, they can't take it for granted. They've got to keep on doing the things they did (and more) that got them to that point. Otherwise the demand will evaporate.

The managing director, or director of football or who ever he is came out last week when talking about the Suarez incident said that Sanchez is very much in Barca's plan and he is not going anywhere.

Unpopular transfer suggestions

Now, remembering that we failed to make the Champions League and are rather financially prudent, are there any left-field suggestions?

Personally, I think Ashley Young should be a target.

1. He has proven, to some extent, that he can perform at a high level. There were glimpses of talent for Villa, United and England.

2. He has capabilities to score goals - which given our lack of goals from midfield, and to some extent our strikers, is vital.

3. He predominantly plays on the left, which is one of our problem areas.

4. He's versatile, so offers options in the centre and on the right.

5. His competition - Chadli, Townsend and Lennon - have failed to impress.

6. He's probably available and probably realistic, in terms of transfer fee and his willingness to come.

In the event we found buyers for two of Lennon, Chadli and Townsend, I think he'd be a great option.

The reason we aren't in the market yet is that we have a massive squad, expensively assembled, the majority whom (apart from players who have come from the academy teams) have been purchased in the last 2 years.

We don't need a massive transfer binge, we did that last summer:

Lloris (purchased 2012)
Vertonghen (purchased 2012)
Chiriches (purchased 2013)
Dembele (purchased 2012)
Capoue (purchased 2013)
Holtby (purchased 2013)
Paulinho (purchased 2013)
Sigurdsson (purchased 2012)
Chadli (purchased 2013)
Lamela (purchased 2013)
Soldado (purchased 2013)
Eriksen (purchased 2013)

In addition to the above, the following have only just made their breakthrough into the first team:

Kane, Townsend, Rose, Fryers, Veljkovic, Pritchard.

That leaves only Kaboul, Dawson, Assou-Ekotto, Freidel, Sandro, Lennon and Adebayor as longer-term members of the squad.

Pochettino's brief as per Levy's end of season letter is to get the best out of the players bought in last season's splurge and the previous summer. Some of the players like Lamela, Soldado, Capoue, Chadli, have hardly had a chance to show what they can really do yet with a settled system and proper coaching.

I actually saw what Paulinho could do in Brazil's last match, much better from him.

Pochettino will be assessing the squad in training and maybe even the first few friendlies. If there is a position then that he thinks he won't be able to use any of the existing players in then we'll move then.

Levy…Baldini…Poch…SOMEBODY - pull your finger out!!

Is anyone else getting increasingly frustrated by the amount of VERY DECENT signings being made by our supposed rivals, whilst we seem to sit on our arses with barely a decent name in the rumour mill, let alone consider concrete possibilities!!

We're losing ground on those around us, and whilst we wasted 90-odd million last heart on crap like Paulinho and Chadli, Liverpool, Arsenal and alike are genuinely strengthening their squads, and more importantly, getting them in in time to get some serious pre-season time in!

Chelsea - Fabregas, Costa

Liverpool - Lambert, Lallana, Emre Can, advanced talks for Origi and Markovic

Arsenal - Debuchy and Sanchez v.likely, Balotelli still very possible. Walcott to return will feel like a new-ish signing.

Man Utd - Herrera, Shaw, LOUIS VAN GAAL!

I know Poch needs to assess the team, but I fear we are falling behind very quickly already and need to pull our finger out if we're to have any chance of avoiding another dull 5th/6th place playoff with Everton!

Re: Levy…Baldini…Poch…SOMEBODY - pull your finger out!!

There are many fans of other teams who were saying the same about us last season as we signed the players we did.

There's no way of telling how any of those signings will fit into any of those teams until the season starts. Just because we haven't signed anyone doesn't necessarily mean we won't be stronger next season. Although I would like to see a left back and centre back at bare bare minimum.

Re: Levy…Baldini…Poch…SOMEBODY - pull your finger out!!

We dont need that many chances to compete with top 4. It seems to of gone almost unnoticed amongst all the upheaval last season that we did sign some genuine quality, not one of those that we bought in last summer doesnt have a lot of talent. Im not buying into it that we have wasted the Bale money on a load of flops. Once Poch has decided who he wants to use you will find we only need a couple of major acquisitions ie left back and one or two CBs....

Chelsea - Fabregas Torres MKII, Costa Sergei Rebrov

Liverpool - Lambert Charlie Adam, Lallana David Bentley, Emre Can Close to being a Mexican't, advanced talks for Origi extremely poor man's Freddy Adu and Markovic Ain't exactly no Maxim Tsigalko

Arsenal - Debuchy and Sanchez v.likely, Balotelli still very possible. Walcott to return will feel like a new-ish signing. turd sandwich

Man Utd - Herrera, Shaw, LOUIS VAN GAAL! still far from being a football team. watch LVG get 2p from 8 and perhaps the fans will start noticing their players being a pack of festering ferrets.

All we need is a wizard who can turn Rose into a footballer. A damn powerful one, wizard that is. Lvl:2 at least.

Re: Levy…Baldini…Poch…SOMEBODY - pull your finger out!!

I expect us to be fighting for 6th with Everton anyway. Since Redknapp, Modric and then Bale left we have lost our way a bit and literally have to settle for a slow rebuild again to genuinely challenge for a top 4 place.

We can only hope Poch will get more out of our signings from last season, but we just don't know.

Our rivals really are strengthening impressively and I get the feeling they haven't even stopped yet, I'm sure Chelski, Arsenal, Utd, City and Liverpool will make more big name signings in the weeks to come.

Re: Levy…Baldini…Poch…SOMEBODY - pull your finger out!!

If this WC has taught us anything, it's that expensive glamorous players get you nowhere.

The standout teams have been those that are organised, disciplined, hard-working, have a good shape and can move the ball quickly. Chile, Colombia and Germany have been by far the standout teams.

I think the effect that some hardcore coaching by a Bielsa-disciple like Poch will have on us will be 10 fold what any new signings would be.

Don't get me wrong, I have a few minor issues with our squad - Rose is terrible and Chadli, Dembele and Kaboul could probably be upgraded on. But the biggest signing of the year by far was Poch. He'll get us competitive with Arsenal, Liverpool and United (I think City and Chelsea are unreachable), and within our zero net spend restriction.
