Transfer thread

We don't sign elite players and I would be very surprised if at the end of the window we have signed one. So yeah I don't really buy that. We just don't want to take the risk, but its strange you have these players who are ready for the next step and available for reasonable fees that we don't go for, but now will go for them at an even earlier stage which I don't mind but there's an in-between stage that we seen unwilling to embrace.

There is obviously an assumption in your logic that we chose not to take the risk. How do we know that? We've seen many players of this age over the years snub Spurs and the other bigger clubs to make sure they have first team football and build their PL reputation. You can go as far back as players like Parker and Wright-Phillips and see these guys waste years of their career sitting on the bench at the top clubs. Then you see someone like Olise playing for BM now as he made exactly the right career choices. Perhaps we went for all of them.

I think as fans we sometimes need to see more best intent in our club when it comes to transfers. This window for me was about getting the Frank / Ange transition done. Part of me doesn't even care if we sit on our wallets and consolidate around our new manager and just run for half a season with who we already have in the squad. The new manager has the potential to have the greatest impact at Spurs and it is likely that our best players this coming season will be the ones that we bought over the last few seasons, not anyone signed in August.

I just think the proof is in the pudding. If we went for say Hackney would be really think he couldn't possibly get games and make the role his own? He might not even be good enough but players in that strata I think are the perfect additions we should be going for.. of course maybe we do a d never get them but it seems strange that we always fail at getting them, I just think we tend not to really speculate as a transfer policy.

I think lower cost “speculative” buys are just a better fit for us as a club
So many big money buys fail at every club
And I mean every club

I'm still on the fence when it comes to Spence. It was if there was a bandwagon last season in his favour. Whichever side he plays he needs to defend with way more intensity and concentration. It's as if that part of the game is secondary to him behind his touch and skills. I want to see more Porro in him to be fair. I also want Destiny to defend better and stop giving away those free kicks when he just runs into people as if he's Mr Blobby.

I reckon Frank will be really good for our full-backs. Ange wasn't in my opinion.
Spence’s one on one defending against a winger is great. You rarely see him beaten, he seems to enjoy that part. However if the ball is elsewhere on the pitch his awareness of what’s happening around him is a little lacking.

I like Udogie, he’s one of my favourite players, but let’s call a spade a spade his defending is no good. I hate to say it but I think he might run into some difficulties this season. He doesn’t really do the traditional cross where you bend it or whip it in from deep or the touch line ala Porro. He almost always goes for the cut back. You need this for non-inverted full back. Hopefully he develops his game accordingly. But this plus poor defending plus a suspect injury record could see him in a spot of bother.

glad that TF has brought in a coach responsible for individual player improvement.

spence, udogie are at the right age where they can and will improve.

Haven't quite a few of our signings in recent years been in that kind of strata?

Perhaps you're thinking of a different "strata" than me, but younger players with the potential to step up and develop into much better players seems very much to be a big part of our strategy.

This summer we've so far seemingly focused on more ready made players (including the attempted signing of MGW with Kudus). I think that makes sense given where we are right now with a rather young and imo very talented squad already.

I don't know enough about Hackney in particular to know if he's already good enough, but if we do go for a more proven deep midfielder I think that makes sense given the squad we already have.

He’s an 8 for me. I don’t see that changing. Wants to cover a lot of grass and adds a bit of impetus in transition.

I see that, and I still think he could become an excellent roving playmaker from a deeper position, again providing we have the right balance around him. He will always be more exposed in such a role right now because as we now, none of our options there are particularly 'sixy'...

Your point about Olise is a very good one (rest of your post too). Some players probably would step up almost regardless of the circumstances, maybe he would have too, really wonderful player. But he needed time at Palace to really step up. Some players need that and it's not a certainty that he would have developed as well with us.

And with a lot of money in the PL other clubs will also sign very talented players and develop them.

He did fine with the progression though not with his left
The issue was what was in front of him IMO… the triangle of doom but that is gone now
What I liked was his defending on that side
He did fine because the progression was mainly on the inside. When it was on the outside he struggled. With Frank's system the progression will more often be on the outside.

I maintain my point that If we end up with Spence covering both sides then that is poor work by our DoF and recruitment team.

I agree with this bit. He was poor for periods last year. He really needs to knuckle down, stay injury free and have a run of games to try and really get back on track, or I can see him being replaced as first choice over the next season.
I think he was poor when he was playing through fatigue and injury. Porro also had a period where he dipped through the same.

I thought the Udogie we saw in the late stage Europa games when he was more rested was the real Udogie.

I don't think many people realise how difficult it is to play well when having to play massively fatigued.

another rumour but at least this is not another CB!
quite a direct player who progresses the ball extremely well through the midfield, who also takes free kick duties for Roma.
And i always have a soft spot for Argentinian midfielders

100% agree that he cannot be the only option
That’s horrendous and poor planning

How long before the club should make it uneasy at the club for those we want to move on? Restriction of minutes/no squad number etc

Seemingly (rumours) the players we want to off load are happy to stay?

Probably for the ones we want to offload, we are at the top of the level they would be able to get and likely all downhill once they leave us.
Plus we have CL as well, so who wants to leave knowing that? Perhaps only Romero because if he goes it will likely top another CL club higher in the food chain...

That's how it goes when you buy how we have done over many years

I would have agreed with you a few years back. What you talk about is what we've been doing for a fair few seasons now. We obviously can't get all of them. We've got Spence, Kulu, Bergval, Gray, Kinsky, VDV, Udogie, Odobert, Tel, Yang etc. We really have landed some potential stars in these last few seasons. It's so nice not to be linked with old boys Lukaku and de Vrij to be fair. We're buying young and nurturing. That's our MO.

When Spence is in that one-on-one position he's perhaps fine. When he's ambling back and leaving his side exposed then he's clearly not. That's the intensity and commitment I see from Porro that I want to see in Spence. He needs to be more the athlete when it comes to getting back into position. He needs to feel pain when we don't get the clean sheet and be a defender first. That is what I'm waiting for with him.
