Transfer thread

Am I right in saying he had just completed a season on loan at Saints though? Or was that the season before.

I remember Godin formed great partnerships with Miranda and Gimenez and therefore Toby never quite got that Athletico career going. I think Toby was also deployed at 6 at one point.
Yeah he had
And we gazumped Southampton to get him

Money is the simples factor for all players
After that it’s trophies
We can demonstrate we can win
Others can’t
And it’s why players will doubt things and need even more money to be persuaded IMO

See i disagree, a solitary trophy doesn't do that - you need to follow it up with more or win in conjuntion with consistent high level league performances otherwise it will be viewed as a one off. Atm we're no different to any of the other clubs outside of the 5 regular winners that managed to win a trophy over the last 20 odd years.

I agree
It is a one off too (see my additional comments to my post)
But I also think players will look at the money first
Let’s take Arsenal as an example
I could argue they have stagnated now. Is 2nd their ceiling. Looks that way and with no cups to show are they the great bet
Or look at us. An anomaly of a season where we still made cup semis and won one that is very very valued in Europe. Where are you as a player gonna make the best impression and progress? You look back to the moment and that’s where United punch. They pay their whole team about 50% more than they should in the market

I think a sensible player will look at last season and understand the league was an anomaly just like some fans will say winning the cup was too (as everyone seems to want to be the opposite) and both would be considered
We haven't proven that we can win consistently. We've proven that we've won a cup. Singular. There's nothing to suggest that it won't be another 17 years before we win another one from a player and non Spurs fan perspective.

Players want £££
It’s really the be all and end all
Most know that only very very few will win anything next season so why wouldn’t they take the £££
And thinking about United for example it’s an easy win
More money and they have less games to play

This sort of tells me that next season's big heroes are probably already at the club.
Agreed. It is likely that our major players in the coming season, will be the guys that are already at the club now.
It's a big ask for someone to come in, hit the ground running and be THE MAN. Without getting injured.

Sorry to blind you with complex science, but each player has another year of experience and our 21s are becoming 22, our 22s are becoming 23, our 23s are becoming 24, it all makes a big difference. Only really Son that is on the wind-down, everyone else is on the wind-up. *Winky emoji*

Can’t really blame a player with no affiliation to Spurs to choose ManUre as not only bigger wages and sponsorship deals but despite being in turmoil they’ve still won a Europa League + 2 FA Cups + 2 League Cups in the past decade.

Can but hope that this Europa trophy will transform our club into a silverware accumulating machine but considering our previous 2 UEFA Cups both heralded the end of eras for Nicholson and Burkinshaw the omens aren’t great.

Doubt we have made an offer TBH
He may have only had an offer from United and we know they throw £££ at players to get them

I find the "which type of player should we buy" conversation really interesting.

I believe it is a very personal thing. You could have 2 very similar profile players and one will say yes and one will say no. I'm not sure there is a hard and fast science to it actually.

It's almost why having a Lange and a Paratici at the club seems sensible. One uses a data driven approach to figure out which players fit the profile of what our manager needs. The other constantly uses the grapevine and taps into his black book to find out which players would possible head our direction. When those 2 things happen on the same player, magic can happen.

I'm not wed to any league when it comes to where we should buy from. For me it is about talent and age. I have rarely seen older purchases succeed at Spurs. I've seen loads in the treatment room, I've seen trouble makers like Sherwood undermine managers and I've seen players visibly losing their powers and ending up on massive salaries for no first team benefit. Normally, that's the hang up I have. I think we should have a maximum age for purchasing outfield players of about 26. That's been our best model for years and years.

The only other hang up I have is when we start doing mass change as opposed to buying quality over quantity. I'd be happy with just 2 or 3 signings this summer.
