Transfer speculation

Levy does not strike me as someone who would not be aware of our need for progression but also aware of not trying to run before you can walk.

Yep, I know all this but effectively prices have doubled (or more) in one window. Every transfer window is a little more ridiculous than the last, but this one is different. Spending has immediately jumped to obscene levels and often for rather average players. It is madness and unsustainable, but thankfully we have a chairman who won't get involved with stupid stuff.

But the increase in TV revenue this window is also different - it's jumped more than ever before, after being the same for the last 3 seasons:

Then again you may be right that the increase in fees is bigger than the increase in TV revenue - maybe clubs are getting overexcited and stupid...

I think we will have to go for the unknown players really, which still will now cost about £10m as all the known players have pretty much doubled what you'd normally expect to pay for them (as a general rule). But not sure whether our scouting system is better or worse now that Mitchell has gone.

The one I think with hindsight we should have taken a punt on is Ramirez the striker that went to Everton, that looked like a real value signing.

We could pay off the debt quicker than Arsenal did, although our stadium is a lot more than what theirs cost but it's all relative as there's was what, 12 years ago now? Plus if we do really have to sell a player we can get £100m for any one of the top ones easily (not that I want us to at all) but we are in a decent position.

I just think coming 2nd last year would make us very attractive to a lot of the top players and I genuinely thought we would sign a couple of "well known world class" players. Is levy being sensible or foolish? I'm caught in between.
It's the salaries, mate. We can spend £30-40m if we want to, but those players will come with salary demands that won't fit into our wage structure. If we paid top dollar, I don't doubt for a second that we could get almost anyone we wanted.

Yeh I guess so. £100k a week is not a lot nowadays for the top players I guess.

Completely. We're going to have to gradually change this and get nearer to Arse and Liverpool (our closest peers) over the next few years

I don't think being foolish is one of the options tbh If he doesn't spend, we only end up retaining the money and that goes to pay the stadium, that we then start seeing the benefit of quicker.
The top end players, we just can't do the wages, and the £30m players, we all just think Sissoko:eek::D.

Just think this 'making hay' era might just be perfect timing for us with such a big infrastructure project on the go.

Poch staying is the most important element. (by far)

How do you know Arnautovic is their marquee signing?
I don't know that for sure of course. But even in this market that's a lot of money... Would have thought he's at least one of their biggest signings this summer.
What about Danillo..
Walker remains one of the best full backs around defensively. Can't believe how long the "poor defensively" description has stuck with him.

The tabloids and SSN love to prattle on about transfer fees but those are just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to how much players end up costing their clubs.

A record £1.2bn was spent on Premier League transfers during the summer of 2016 but that is dwarfed by the £2.5bn which went on paying the players' wages over the course of the season and £100k per week is actually below the average salary at the likes of ManU!

No offence intended to you specifically Rorschach, but these comments are getting a little old already to me! Yes fees are huge, but that's because this is the first window with the 70% bigger TV deal. PL clubs now have much more money, so prices will inflate accordingly.
The clubs throw away all the extra money, we the fans don't benefit in any what so ever, so in the end the only ones really getting more money, A LOT MORE MONEY, are the scumbag agents!!!

Whilst I generally agree I think it's equally important that we show our ambition so that we can keep our better players happy - if we fall away and it is seen as a result of a lack of investment then we run the risk of our players looking to move awau from the club.

Definately. I said in my other post that if we're not using cash on transfers we can allocate that to keeping the current squad happy. And why wouldnt you? They are tried and tested.

In another thread i (flippantly:)) suggested the Walker money alone could pay for 14 players to receive, on average, £40,000 a week more for the next two years.

Not saying it would, BUT i think i'd sacrifice Walker if it guaranteed the squad being happy for the next two seasons.??

I think our turnover will have grown a fair bit this past year or so what with the new TV deal which will in turn mean our available budget for wages will have risen too, as we generally seem to keep it at around 55% of our overall turnover - so in theory we could probably have another round of contract extensions and wage rises and keep players happy without having to go beyond our usual limitations
