Thought it would be interesting to give a brief summary of fan behavior of this current time and season, "who was the spacegoat in 2024? Aaah, how times have changed". Could possibly be interesting to look back upon. It isn't long ago Ange was lauded as the next Messiah, but was on thursday against Bournemouth verbally abused and booed like I've never seen a manager been subjected to before.

Earlier in the season we've had parts of our fan base (not sure how many) harassing Brennan Johnson on social media leading to him deleting his accounts, and he still doesn't celebrate with the fans when he scores.

Timo Werner has also been the subject of abuse from many fans this season.

I would also say that the atmosphere at the stadium this season has sounded rather flat for most of our games (through tv, anyway).

I got a message from a season ticket holding friend after the Bournemouth game and consequent abuse of Ange: "we're the most toxic fans in the country". I hope that's not true, but we're certainly not particularly good at supporting our team when the going gets a bit tough, which is a bit odd, as quite a few of us must still remember the 90's.

Anyways - what's your opinion on our fanbase? Are we generally good at supporting our team and club, or is there a vocal minority always brick stirring? Is toxic Twitter-culture seeping into the fan culture? Is there perhaps a good reason for fans being so dismayed?

What would be the wisest thing you as a fan and we as a fanbase could do to turn a bad period around, whoever is in charge?

I think we have a fan base who thrive on negativity
I’ve seen it first hand many times
We beat city 4 nil and I heard people complain that we should have conceded several goals
We lose 1 nil and we are getting smashed
Our defence is awful her fans think Romero will be sold to Real Madrid and VDV to another huge club
There is no belief in the club ever doing anything
You go to Liverpool and United and they expect to win every game. It start with the fan base
We have fans reading one line that’s misquoted and taking it as fact and the truth because they trust the worst people

I know of 2 ST holders who put their ticket up for sale straight after the game on Thursday calling Ange a fat c^&t for ruining their club… their club … the one they are abandoning because of a bad result

Last weekend before Brennan scored the bloke behind me in block 256, row 28, seat 239 I think was calling him every name under the sun… he scored 5 second later and this guy didn’t celebrate. That’s a typical fan who I hear at every game, biting, moaning and enjoying brick

On the train home last week I heard 3 blokes complaining they weren’t buying any cup tickets because they didn’t wanna line Levy’s pockets whilst having two shopping bags of spurs merch,… that’s the insanity of spurs fans

Then add in the divine right to beat every team below us because of who we are and you can see why our fan base is probably the lost mocked in the league …. sexy is as much about the fans as the club imo

Now we’re gonna get people jump on and say I’m wrong but I’ve seen it. I’ve heard. I hear it at most games
The only time it didn’t happen was under poch and I’m not sure how he United everyone but he did.

Just one result?

I can go as far back to the end of the 10 game unbeaten run....

Ange only has himself to blame with some insane decision making and running his favorites into the ground. That is the sign of bad manager.

A good manager swallows his pride and does what best for the team, even if it means playing players he doesn't like.

As for the rest, a lot of the way we are is down to the way Levy has run the club for 20 years+ and Sugar before him. The club was in trouble, but when Sugar outed Venables, that was when we finally lost soul of the clubs, that is when we became a spreadsheet club, with Levy lucking out on Poch... Every other manager he screwed over.... Ramos won a cup, then Levy sold both Keane and Berbatov, replaced them Pavlyochenko and Cambell on loan for a year.

Levy is a bald headed gnome that has so much to answer for and has left Ange with a massive mountain to climb to sort the mess out... But as so many people have said, Ange isn't helping himself, by not showing any kind of nuanced management and tactics to keep us ticking over whilst the project to rebuild moves on.

He just repeatedly shoots himself in the foot, and the fans see this... And when people spend £1000's into things they love, they hate being taken for mugs.

Not to mention who toxic football has become in general since Sky took over... Money has killed the magic of football...

Its really nothing new to have macarons in the ground screaming abuse at whatever manager or player is in their sights. I have been going to the Lane [ i know its not called that anymore but its will always be the Lane to me] for a vey long time and i do not expect that will change ever. It gets more noticed in todays game because its can be heard on the TV by those who watch.

The biggest change is that because of the likes of T w ATTER, and other macarons on social media sites it is noticed more then it used to be. You also have all the wanabees on the these sites who rant and rave because it get hits on their platforms and encourages other macarons to spout their bile.

You also have TV stations Sky, BT etc who a have a lot of time to fill and there is no shortage of ex players who will go on these programs and spout brick [ while getting well paid]. A lot of fans in todays game watch games on the box and take what some ex player, pundits and announcers say and that is usally a lot of rubbish [ some of the time] because they have a lot of screen time to fill.

Fans over the years have always moaned about their team [ and that is their right] but with all the media that has a lot of time to fill especially on the box its so easy to get lead into screaming and moaning more.

To improve things i would:

1) cap the proportion of tickets sold to over 50s
2) have cocaine breatherlisers at turnstyles

That would give us a less cynical and less angry crowd

Drugs at spurs is something I used to see a lot of but less in the new ground. Maybe it’s less blatant
I once got thrown out the pub toilets at the old badger pub which is now a health. Ever because I wasn’t in there to buy coke
Weird

I see it in behaviours a lot, though not the physical taking (cctv and toilet design in the new stadium i guess).

Its such a crap drug too, really brings out the worst in people.

Contrary though, many observers think it was the rise of ecstacy culture in the late 80s/early 90s that significantly improved fan behaviour in that period.

We’re no different to every fan base in the country. Have sat amongst home fans at both Bournemouth and Southampton in the recent past; they have their fair share of foul-mouthed moaners. We notice our fans’ behaviour more for obvious reasons, that’s all.

I’ve sat with Liverpool, Everton, city and United fans and they are nothing like that
Maybe it’s sitting it’s fans who are positive rather than negative
Or maybe it’s just northern teams
Although city fans were very doom and gloom a while back

There was a good discussion on this on The Fighting C ock podcast this week. They talked about the club creating a fanbase which is increasingly treated like customers (client reference numbers; ever-increasing prices for product; constant emails about club product etc) - and what do customers do when they are unhappy? They complain.

I don’t do it very often, but even a quick dip into Liverpool, Arsenal or Emirates Marketing Project forums shows plenty of negativity.

Our fans revel in it imo
Our fans are almost sadists
And I know fans of many other clubs but mainly the bigger ones
All big clubs treat their match going fans as cash cows
It’s grim
The game is so focused on money and that’s because the money is needed to pay the players
It’s not sustainable and horrible for the future of the game imo
I was a funeral yesterday of my mates dad who died recently. 77, born in Barnet, tithe ham through and Through and a ST holder since 73 I think they said
Choice of songs included Can’t smile without you and a cash and Dave one that I can’t remember. They also had his scarf on his coffin from the 80s
He used to moan about everything even when it was good
Trains.. yep
Football.. yep
Tickets.. yep
Even the stairs at his seat was too steep
But that’s a spurs fan
And a pretty damn great loyal one too

Pretensions of being a big club yet seriously starved of success. It used to be that good foot all alone would satisfy but I dont think thats the case anymore. Fans paying some of the highest ticket fees in the world and a realisation that it's possibly never going to all fall into place has people disgruntled.

You'd have to be a sadist to support Spurs though. 🤣

In football terms there's no real benefit, we don't win anything serious, we don't play the best football etc.

So yeah you have to be a bit of sadist to keep doing it every week. 🤣😅

People certainly seem to feel a lot more entitled these days. There's no doubt that the support - the level of noise - has got much much worse, ie quieter, since moving to the new stadium. Partly that is the amount of commercial and PL "noise" - fans used to sing before games, now the place is deserted until about 10 minutes before the game starts. But when we win, the after-party is hugely noisy. I guess fans are less tolerant of failure now. As you say, when you are a customer not a fan, you're going to complain when you don't get what you want.

I'm not sure ticket prices are that relevant in the moaning, I moan like fudge but rarely get to go to games.

When I do go, I think the ticket prices are pretty good value as well, compared to what I pay to get into Chelmsford City, or the cinema, or a gig, theatre, comedy etc.

One or two calling Ange out for not rotating enough. I thought he initially rotated hugely in the league cup and the Europa, though he clearly doesn't rate Spence or Lankshear. I think the combination of injuries and Bentancur's suspension has been hugely damaging in terms of having to keep playing certain players. But his style of play does allow the opposition to have chances, so while on balance I'm in favour of keeping him, part of me wonders if Potter could do better.

I think we’ve become more entitled as a fanbase, but then non-Spurs fans I know would say Spurs fans have always had a misplaced sense of entitlement.
Discontent is definitely more noticeable and vocal now however. Whether it’s truly warranted I don’t know but it feels that the atmosphere can turn toxic at the click of your fingers these days, which I really don’t like.

And you go to a huge amount of games to see it

Our fans are the same as every other fanbase.

Some are positive while some are negative. Some are delusional while others are realists.

Some are rational, others call in to Talksport.

Some are hard-core, others are casual.

And so on......it's the same up and down the country.
