Toby Alderweireld

If it came to it

How often to top players not play? They have a sulk for a week or two then play as they know it’s the best way to get a move.

I’m all for him moving if it’s for the best btw - but not to an English club
I didn’t follow them that closely but it did seem Van Dijk was not the same performance wise at SCBC although their reliance on him was bigger than ours. Toby doesn’t seem the type to sulk but the only time we managed to do it well was with Modric and we still had all the contractual cards in that scenario. I think the nature of the ‘business’ now is we will make a money decision rather than a footballing one, IF Toby pushes which remains a big if as all he’s done is take his time negotiating which he is entitle to do.

Lol. Very true. So as a Spurs fan he will turn brick if he stays and get even better if he leaves!

I just don’t want him to go. He’s been key to our recent improvement for me and I’d like him around to help Sanchez and Foyth push on and cover for Jan experience wise (who I think has stepped up in his absence). I thought Sanchez looked better in a back 3 with him and that gave us some flexibility and I also think he’d help Aurier settle more.

Oh absolutely, Id love him to stay and be a mentor, and to give us a few years while we transition to the younger crop.

I certainly dont want him to go. I just dont automatically buy the whole "if we sell him domestically its a disaster" line either.

These threads would not be the same or even exist at a 'money no object' outfit. How boring would that be. One big reasons it would be so sad if Spurs became one.
So I can’t imagine what a City fan could moan or be worried about..other than the origins of their success but the other richer clubs:
United - brick football, expensive players not playing, rashford getting little game time, miles away from City
Liverpool - can we keep Salah, can we finish above united, we need to win something to keep our manager and best players ;-)
Chelsea - money is an object, so it’s actually quite difficult to win the league when you have a budget..hazard off, Conte off maybe no CL next year new ground solution years away...
Goons - do I want us to win the Europa which gives us another year of Wenger or lose every game until he finally goes...

He end of that guaranteed top 4 cartel has shaken up things a bit, it’s a shame that City are so far ahead as they are seemingly going to guarantee a trophy, cl participation and competing for the title so the only issue they have is goog players actually wanting to play ever game rather than making enough appearances and earning big money to get a medal or Pep leaving if the don’t win the CL / they go on a bad run and someone questions his credentials without a chequebook.

There is always a reason for a player to move -> see Naymar, Ronaldo, Coutinho, list goes on ...

Come off it

We are not Leeds.

You are right we are not and we have levy to thank for that, but there are still a few fans who think he should have/do things differently. We are a club who HAVE to live on a budget ( unlike the money doped ones) and because of that we will never stop some fans from saying " pay him what he wants" " we need to buy more players" etc,etc etc.

So if Kane, Christian, Alli etc come back from the world cup and say they all want 150k a week you dont think we should break/the club wont break its current structure to keep them?

From what is being said, they are at least initial conversations with several players about their contracts (Eriksen has confirmed). I think the club is willing to break the current wage cap for Kane, probably for Eriksen & Dele as well.

The issue with this conversation is we don't know the details, did Toby ask for a raise to 120K? or did he ask for 200K? one is possible, even likely, the other is never going to be on table

I think Levy will do what is BEST for the club, fans can moan till the cows come home but Levy will not/should not put our progress at risk to please a few moaning fans.

I don't give two hoots what Roberto Martinez classifies as 'fit'. I would wager that his definition of fitness is not as rigorous as Poch's.

Well he was fit enough to play today. If Toby remains on the bench over the next few weeks then it will be a vase of "losing" Toby's heart and mind.

Let’s flip this round a little...

We have son who is out of contract in 2 years I believe

Is happy at the club and has been arguably our 2nd most influential player this season

Could be rabies we have a replacement there in lamela or Moura

If it came down to offering son or Toby thee terms they want, who would you offer the money too?

I know son wouldn’t be offered crazy money like Toby wants but he does play in a position where players are paid more and people seem to see that as key

Son is rarely injured and has been available for the vast majority of the past two seasons after that early plantar facsatis thing.
