Toby Alderweireld

Well he was fit enough to play today. If Toby remains on the bench over the next few weeks then it will be a vase of "losing" Toby's heart and mind.
As I have written several times already here, Danny Rose said a while back that he was fit enough to play for any other club. But playing for Spurs under Poch required you to be a couple of levels above fit enough.

I remember this quote and it is a strong counter to the worries swirling around. The only caution I would sound in response is that the fitness required for Rose's position - considering the sheer distance he is expected to cover and the attacking and defensive roles - is almost certainly higher than that for Alderweireld's position.

Definitely but there's also match sharpness, miss a ball or mistime a challenge and it could be a red card or a goal conceded against any premiership team. Magnify that with Chelsea away on Sunday and he won't be starting this weekend. Then 2 of our next 3 games are the Manchester clubs and its difficult to see where he'll get much gametime.

Personally after 2 internationals i wouldn't be expecting him to start v Chelsea having not been in the side prior to the break - folloeing week onward though id expect to see him reintroduced if all is well.

That’s the key
Why change a winning side

Because the side was winning when Toby was in it pre-injury. Because he's our best defender on his day and we're playing Chelsea away. Because bringing him in doesn't mean dropping sanchez, just going back to the back 3 which i arguably sensible against Chelsea anyway.

Vorm, Llorente, Foyth and Sissoko haven't lost a game this season in the FA Cup... do you still want them in the side for a semi against Utd as opposed to reinstating Lloris, Jan, Dembele etc??

We haven’t played a top side yet in the FA cup so I don’t judge those games personally Although I do think he will play vorm

We’re we winning when Toby played? I haven’t looked that far back to be honest. I know he didn’t play in our last defeat vs City as we also didn’t have Sanchez who has played in one defeat in the league (the ref robbery at the arse)

Dingo-brain Martinez issues stupid does-no-good warning about Toby getting first team football for his WC place. This doesn't help at all - neither us nor Belgium (or the Dutch for that matter). One, it's fairly obvious a player needs regular first-team football to be better, two this would have been better handled by saying nothing publicly and letting those in football who aren't desperate for the press to write about their blitherings to go about their business.

Agree! But I'll have a friendly fiver that he plays Vorm!

I don't think Martinez said anything bad there, I don't know how he could have said anything else. As you say, he's stating a fact, Toby is already going to want to be playing more, and if Toby is already considering his options, forcing Poch's hand so he can get fit for the WC isn't going to endear him much to his club. Nothing much has changed. It's whether Poch thinks it will be worth dropping Sanchez to get Toby fit, when Toby hasn't looked like he has regained his sharpness yet. Personally, I'd leave it as is.

Is anybody else still a bit annoyed (and perplexed!) as to why DL allowed such a ridiculous release clause to be placed in his contract!! I still can't see any advantage to us in it?? And they're not daft, they must've known how the market was shifting, so £25m for one of our prized assets is an absolute joke!
£25m for a 30-year old 3 years ago would have been highway robbery. And yes, they knew the market was shifting, but no one imagined this kind of shift. £25m for a 30-year old 4 years from when we signed him and assuming a market shift would still have been considered highway robbery.

He should, he’s performed well in the games this year.

He’s not quite as athletic as Hugo, but, for me, he’s probably better with the ball at his feet and less likely to overplay us into trouble.

Given the alleged tensions between Toby & Poch Martinez could have said he'll see how fit Toby is for the WC and that obviously it's preferable for him to have as many competitive minutes as possible.

I'd leave things as they are too - Tottenham Hotspur's results are more important than strengthening Belgium for the WC.
