Toby Alderweireld

Are we sure he is even going?

It happens time and again, all this sort of press and then before you know it the famous Poch new contract pose...

No, but it appeals to the "sky is falling" mob, what happens, happens. Nobody can be chained to a club and players and their agents are in the driving seat on most occassion. Too much is being made of his worth to us, we've played United, Liverpool and Woolwich without getting beat, we now play as a team, rather than a bunch of good players relying on individual performances. I am amused than many have cloned into Liverpool fans and think signing a player will automatically win them the league, CL, World Club Championship, the Ashes, Ryder Cup...........

Really?? I disagree. I think the market shift has been on the cards for a long, long time now. The businessmen would've seen it too. It's got out of hand granted, but there were many players going for ridiculous fees & wages around the time Toby signed to suggest it was only going to get higher

Not to the level of a centre back who is pretty average to decent going for £75m
Or a very inexperienced naive centre back who can pass a bit going for £47.5M

and on the comment about the release clause, I’ve read it was because we put in the extension clause so they said ok, we want something for us too, which is quite reasonable

Maybe we’re looing at him and Jan and thinking... How managing older centre backs can we have without stunting the development of the younger centre backs

And Jan isn’t breaking the banks and stays fit

Selling him to An English side would damage us more than letting him sit out another year of his contract.
I like the sentiment but then we end up with a player who will play with varying levels of commitment who will then still go domestically one year later (admittedly one year older and possibly not match sharp)
IN this situation I guess we have a standoff - Toby says I go to x or see out the year, we say you go internationally or you rot in the reserves for the year? I just can’t see us having the balls to do it, plus upsetting squad harmony having him around. We might have to offer him a financial incentive to move to the club we choose, along with taking a lower fee which I would be an advocate of but not sure Mr Levy would see it that way.
I’m still hoping the delay is linked to the new stadium opening up the wage budget btw and he will still play a part this season, he was nothing but immense pre injury and could be crucial in a big game.

Why?

If the extra money allows us to buy a better replacement then it's not a black and white situation of just improving a rival

How often does that work?

How much is champions league worth?

If Toby was at Chelsea is it to much of a leap to say they would be 5/6 points better off?

It’s £20 million extra, a club the size of ours shouldn’t have to rely on that amount.

The knock on affect on the squad of a player leaving to a rival would be greater than overseas.

After all this he’s going to stay isn’t he. Ha

Exactly. Saw all the same arguments about Walker. And while I can see some really miss him, I also dont see him as having brought a whole new level to City either...
Walker to City was probably the least impact we could hope for, they are so strong all over its hard to say he’s solely responsible for them kicking on so much this season. Everyone else remains at a similar level to us though so I feel the fight for second (which is a shame in itself) would become harder should any of the other teams have the opportunity to get a PL proven top centre back for what amounts to pocket change for them.

If it came to it

How often to top players not play? They have a sulk for a week or two then play as they know it’s the best way to get a move.

I’m all for him moving if it’s for the best btw - but not to an English club

Maybe.

But while we are playing "what-if", what if Toby never finds that form again? And What if, at the same time, Sanchez turns into an absolute BEAST next season having had a year to settle in (a year where, in all honesty, we havent suffered terribly withouth Toby)

Its not an argument that has an answer, its just a question really of how pessimistic you are.

"You" being the general, not specific. And "You" being a Spurs fan does lend one naturally to pessimism anyway ;)

Can you honestly not see the difference?

People assumed it would be a major loss to us, major boost to them, some sort of double-whammy of bad from our point of view.

Exactly the same logic as being employed now.

So no, no difference.

Would Toby be a bigger plus to Utd than Walker to City? Quite possibly. As I already said though - its all what ifs and honestly not a given it would be the worst of all worlds to us.

Hopefully - i do wonder whether it's all inline to sign in the summer ahead of the move in to the stadium and all the speculation is helping make it a statement of intent from us...

20m is 10% of our turnover +/- - not something that can be cast aside out of principal, all im saying is it's not just about strengthening a rival, it's about us too and what we do after, if we think selling him domestically for more helps us strengthen ourselves better than if we sold hom abroad for less then it would be foolish not to out of principal

Lol. Very true. So as a Spurs fan he will turn brick if he stays and get even better if he leaves!

I just don’t want him to go. He’s been key to our recent improvement for me and I’d like him around to help Sanchez and Foyth push on and cover for Jan experience wise (who I think has stepped up in his absence). I thought Sanchez looked better in a back 3 with him and that gave us some flexibility and I also think he’d help Aurier settle more.
