Timo Werner

Would have been my follow up question to be honest
Me too, son is infuriating me, he's really trying, just not trying the right things. At times it's as if he's debating with himself on what to do, what he's been told to do or what he thinks is best.
Maddison just wants too many touches, with few of them being productive.

Is he going after Werner because he knows he can get rid of him and that will somehow spur the other players on? Seems a bit desperate.

Precisely. You start going after one or two of the more established players, you risk losing all of them.

I’ve seen people go for the weakest option in my work over the years and I’ve called them out for it, but football is a different beast. You need to tread carefully, players have all the power.

He was asked specifically about Werner. Did people want him to lie and say Werner played really well last night?

He took it too far, Werner was no worse than Son and much better than Johnson.

You don’t attack your own in public, you always defend, and keep that stuff in the dressing room.

Could have given his standard response about it all being on him and it's his responsibility to get the players playing he usually rolls out. Could have added that it wasn't just Timo, levels across the board were poor.

Is losing the ball any worse than hiding, or taking the safe option with passing and dribbling?

Should never be captain. You can tell from his personality that the feeling of responsibility will out weigh him playing his natural game, which in turn makes him a worse player. He's playing safe, which has never been in his skill set.

Perfectly fine response from him.

He's protected the players quite a lot imo. If he feels it's right to be more critical in certain moments that's fine.

Up to the players how they respond.

But this is also a risky tactic, shows imo that he's feeling the pressure and the kind of thing that often signals the downfall of a manager. I hope that's not the case with him now.

He’s got 1 goal in 19 games. He was asked specifically about Werner and maybe 99 times out of 100 he would give the standard “everyone played bad” response but maybe he has run out of patience with Werner. What I will say he is it’s partly on Ange for re-loaning him in the first place, he was average last season and we needed far better, even if he is a backup. Knowing this club we will probably make him a permanent signing.

Maddison has clearly not been at his best, but when he looks up and has son, Johnson and Werner as his attacking options, what the hell is he supposed to do, other than take too many touches and pass it back or sideways?

Pass it forward before deciding to take too many touches and pass it sideways or backwards.
Play higher up the pitch and affect the game in dangerous areas and instead of playing in the back 4.
