Timo Werner

I just don’t think it’s worth the emotional effort and time to go all in hard on Werner. He’s 4th choice for the left behind Son, Odobert and probably Richarlison. Soon he’ll be 5th behind Moore. If I heard Villa fans were spacegoating their 4th choice LW, I’d think it a bit odd tbh.

He’s not ideal but he suits the system. I don’t think it’s a coincidence our performances have improved since our players have stayed wider. Previously we lacked the ability to unlock the congested middle. Ange’s instructions to stay wide have opened up spaces centrally and suddenly Maddison is reborn. Also staying wide on the left also allows us to get the ball quicker to Johnson in space on the right. Werner executes staying wide very well. Others on the left prefer to drift in narrow.

A lot of his value is outside of the obvious thing we see which is bad finishing

People went after BJ because he missed opps in a game we lost (and who we lost to mattered), and that's flimflam. The Werner thing is totally overdone, yes he's as composed in front of the goal as Emerson Royal, yes, he should convert ..

But, he clearly fits the system, he's positionally disciplined, his pace means the opposition needs to cover, and it creates space for others. Even the VDV assist, if you look at the frame before VDV drives into the box, Werner is wide left and there is a line of players all the way across to BJ, it pulls defenders/gives them something to think about.

If his playing allows us to rotate, other players score (maybe a few could get on to the end of his crosses) and we continue to win, it's a fudging nothing burger to me. He's obviously not going to stay next season, he's an obvious upgrade but as cover. rotation and allowing us to perhaps bed in Moore gently.

Spurs fans and this constant belief good sides have 100% elite players in them
That's fine and all well and good, it's not even about being 100% elite. I don't think we expect that either considering what we have seen over the years.
Sorry to expect forward players to offer a bit more than pulling defenders out of position and the occasional cross into the box.

They wanted him this season and there is a reason for that. Last season I was on the fence and he did have some good performances. And here's hoping other people can continue to score in tight games where he fails to do so.

It can still be a frustrating thing to watch

Would like nothing more for him to get confidence......

He does already offer more than what you describe...

Really good pressing and work rate. Good at going past players outside and inside. Decent combination play. Good movement. It's really just his finishing where he's really coming up short.

I think we've looked better with Werner in the team, he's missed 3 glorious chances but he's been stretching play and his overall game has been fine.

Son would have taken 1 or 2 of those chances, but his issue is he wouldn't have gotten there on correct form.

I say that as someone that didn't want him back.

Ange on Timo:

Postecoglou has warned against anyone rushing to judgement on the experienced attacker’s [Werner’s] recent misses in front of goal.

“It was 14 days ago those questions were asked of Brennan [Johnson]. It’s where we’re at in this world. We just think he’s missed two chances so he’s hopeless. No, he’s not hopeless. All footballers at this level are very, very good footballers,” he said. “If you write a bad article, it doesn’t mean you’re hopeless. You go ‘actually I could have done better there but I’ll write the next one [better]’.

“Actually, last night Timo, in his first action, took on the winger and put in a brilliant cross for Will [Lankshear] and Will didn’t quite get on the end of it. If that goes in, he’s had a great assist. He gets a one-on-one, if he scores that, if in the last two games he gets a couple of goals, then we’d be having a different conversation, but that’s the fine lines.

We look better because we’re playing the way we’re meant too
I do believe that Sonny can’t play the right way but it so far removed from his natural game and he is an old head now
I like the idea of Sonny as a finisher rather than a starter

On the Sancho thing. He just turned as down and preferred Dortmund. Remember speak to his godfather around the time, and Sancho had a straight choice between the clubs and chose them as he thought it would be a better career move.

It’s fine as long as you except he’s going to cost us points and eventually top 4 or a trophy with his glaring misses. We’re lucky that Johnson is bang on at the moment when it comes to scoring goals and Solanke is chipping in.

100% with you. People saying he’s playing really well other than his misses but he’s a forward. That’s like saying a team is defending really well except for gifting goals to the opposition.

Son/Kulu/Johnson/Richi/Solanke and others have all missed sitters for Spurs in the past year or so.

If we miss top 4 by a point, is that solankes fault for missing chances at Leicester ?

There’s something beautifully honest and simple about this. And it flies in the face of other theories. Levy cheaped out and lowballed City and Sancho, we didn’t want him enough, we could have forced the issue with the Walker deal.

But no, he had a choice of clubs and simply chose what was best for his career. Occams Razor at it’s finest

Sancho wouldn't have got a lot of game time here in 2017, if any, considering how Poch liked to integrate players new to the league.

Wouldn’t be the first Tottenham forward to miss chances
Key is were winning with him playing
Long may that continue
