Re: Tim Sherwood -Your Manager! 18 month contract confirmed!

Not surprised Sherwood was appointed. Maybe Levy took this gamble in order to try and save some face....or maybe it was the ONLY decision he could make in the short term (probable) The 18 month contract is telling...

but an 18 month contract?
sherwood said he didn't wnat to be stop-gap... but is 18 months his idea of a permanent role?

The 18 months is indeed telling. It seems to me that an 18 month contract is an interim/stop-gap appointment, but choosen not to announce it to the world and to get Sherwood's agreement. If Sherwood exceeds expectations he might get an extension in the summer. More likely Levy will bring in a bigger name and just have a year to pay off.

To an outsider, it seems that he couldn't get who he really wanted, and so has had to apply a band aid for the time being. That's my take, and I'd say it's probably accurate.

Re: Tim Sherwood -Your Manager! 18 month contract confirmed!

This is a 6 month contract not an 18 month one. Lets face it if he fails to get champions league then Levy will get someone from the managerial-merry-go round after the world cup. He probably just had to give him 18 months so Timmy would take it.

is that the target he is aiming for?

Re: Tim Sherwood -Your Manager! 18 month contract confirmed!

im not a huge Sherwood fan, but i like this appointment

he clearly has ability and also experience and the right connection within THFC. So he won't come in and upset the apple cart as can often happen when a new manager coming into a club.
the adage with players is - "if you are good enough, you are old enough", well maybe we need to take this outlook with Sherwood.
he could just be exactly what we need - he seems young and adaptable enough to work with a DoF, but has some Harry-esque traits also.

on the flip side - 18 months is a dangling the carrot type contract. if you do well - you get an extension. if you don't - we move onto someone else. and there are not a massive line up of good managers out there that we can get, and no one that is head and shoulders ahead of Sherwood.

Re: Tim Sherwood -Your Manager! 18 month contract confirmed!

that is our target as a club

personally i think he will have until the end of next season to achieve it

this season, IMHO, Levy will just have to take wherever we finish and deal with it (although the squad is good enough for top 6, not sure about top 4), but next season it is minimum requirement

so our target isnt "Top Four" as what several players and the manager and the sacked manager have all said previously?

Re: Tim Sherwood -Your Manager! 18 month contract confirmed!

I just don't know what to think here. The length of the contract suggests he is essentially an extended interim manager, perhaps they have someone lined up who has a contract until the end of next season? Or perhaps they offered him this contract to keep him happy for the time being and will replace him in the summer?

He doesn't have the full qualifications as a manager, special dispensation granted by the Premier League until March when he will complete his course, but will the same rules apply for Europe? Could someone clarify?

Could go either way this one. Sunday didn't instill me with confidence in defence, but was good to have some attacking flair back.

Felt like we had stability for a short period of time, now it's a tightrope to see if Sherwood's chums in the media are right about him being ready. I hope he is, otherwise we are back to being the laughing stock

ok, ill a little hung over this morning, so maybe im missing something

why would our target not be top 4?

Re: Tim Sherwood -Your Manager! 18 month contract confirmed!

but in most of the comments i have read about our aim i have seen them say

"TOP FOUR"

?

Champions league is top 4, unless we get another Chelsea but that's pretty unlikely, and if that does happen again then Sherwood could easily go, look what happened to Redknapp.

Re: Tim Sherwood -Your Manager! 18 month contract confirmed!

I get the champions league thing but this 4th place fixation drives me mad....... Its not a trophy.....and finishing 4th is hardly an achievement for us to go over the top with.... dont get me wrong its quite a task with the opposition we are up against...

Call me old fashioned but I want actual silverware.......I want us to always aim for the top...... 4th is a platform for club growth.....it is not imo the be all and end all as to what this club should want to achieve.

I don't think it's the ultimate goal of what the club want to achieve, it's the next step in the growth of the club, getting champions league regularly means we can bring in a better class of player and then push on for a title challenge. We have to be realistic, if Sherwood came out saying we're looking to win the league this year we'd all say he's a complete macaron and everyone would laugh at us.

Yes I dont agree Sherwood should say publicly that we are after the title.....privatley to his players is a different matter though....yep as I said finishing 4th is a potential platform for club growth.....I say potentially because you still have to get through qualifiers..... dont get me wrong I loved our ucl stint........and if we finish 4th I will be very pleased.....just not dancing around the room with my jubbly's out;)

Levy always talks about the club's ambition to be CL regulars. I don't think he's aiming for 4th and I don't believe he want to do it just once.

sorry mate, not a trick question and not made to make anyone, least of you all you look silly, hope you didnt take offence

i'm actually trying to goad scara into a response :)

basically there is this mini debate i had with him to determine if Harry achieved his target in his last season...and if the basis of his tactical decision in the Villa game that was the penultimate game of our season warranted such scrutiny if infact he was trying to achieve the clubs target. make top 4

Re: Tim Sherwood -Your Manager! 18 month contract confirmed!

Hardly a big deal is it? If he doesnt meet objectives in summer Levy only has a years worth of salary to pay off....

It's a fickle game football. Many are already heralding Sherwood as a better manager than AVB for getting the best out of Adebayor in just 2 games.

In my view a better side than Southampton or even Southampton with all their players available may have massacred that lineup on Sunday such was the imbalance defensively.

AVB was on course to potentially better our best ever points total in the PL. I stil believe he had a much bigger vision for this team. I'm gutted he never got the chance to prove it

Absolutely right.

Also - yes - we scored 3 goals but there a big slice of luck with two of them; the deflected pass in the build up to the own goal and the pass to Ade for the 3rd bobbled out of a tackle.

Could easily have not fallen our way in those two instances.

heeey, look whose here ;)

so then , remember...i am not arguing about what levy's end desire is .....all i am asking is.....Is the target top four or not?

if it isnt top four and it is infact CL...then shouldnt there be like a common theme / ethos throughout the club? Oh wait thats right....there is one...they want to make top four.

i'm assuming levy isnt stupid and he wasnt stupid back then with harry...so once before all we hear is top four but you and a few others say harry didnt achieve the target..top four is not what levy wanted even though no one ever corrected harry...

fast forward to villas boas and NBD (actually i'll probably get grief if i use that).....both keep saying "top four"...all the players are saying "top four"

do you not think that someone would have been out to say "guys, we have been here before..ist CL .......not top four. get it right. if AVB made 4th and united won the CL and finished below us then you lot and AVB ****ed up and failed. on a 110 million pound budget to boot"

you would think that confusion would get ironed out sharpish

Re: Tim Sherwood -Your Manager! 18 month contract confirmed!

As a rival fan, Sherwood's appointment is welcome news. Can't believe you got rid of AVB to replace him with this. Very strange. Doesn't seem to have been a well thought out move.

Probably had something to do with us losing 3-0 at home to an abysmal West Ham side, 5-0 at home to a Liverpool side of equal quality and being unable to muster a single shot on target for the first time at home since the PL began, losing 6-0 away to City, our biggest loss in 18 years. Scoring less than a goal per game, playing shockingly boring football, ostracising our best striker, was incredibly reluctant to give any of the youth a chance even in a dead rubber ropey league game and for some reason was ignoring a player we've just invested a club record £26m on.

I don't think Levy cares all that much what they say. He strikes me far more as the type to care about what they do.

For all we know Levy made that point and AVB/NBD both told him 3rd was not going to happen under any circumstance.
